Every vocal in this song was a separate performance from the singer. I do not duplicate vocals to create layers. Hope that helps!

This is a perfect example of mix with your ears not your eyes. A lot of KZbin videos suggest to keep the comps down to 3-4db. I tend to crank the snot out of them and not look at the meters until after I like the way it sounds. Great video, thanks for letting some tricks out of the bag

This is the detail I fear that most performers and some aspiring mix engineers don't appreciate...the attention to detail in the editing and preparation of the takes and the overall planning of a session. Once all of the 'boring bits' have been taken care of, one can start to mix and do so with confidence. Great video Colt, thank-you :-)

Solid tutorial, Colt! I really like that thickness of the vocals when you don’t want the main vocals front and center. Reminds me of Def Leppard’s vocals in a lot of their choruses. Really thick and layered but then they would push the lead back up and drop a lot of the background vocals for the verses. Really cool dynamics. Also like the way you mixed those lower harmonies towards the end. It’s like you cant really tell it’s there unless you were to take it out. That adds so much!

Greetings from Finland! Nice advice, thanks! I've been experimenting with high- & low-pass filtering for a couple months now and this tip goes "in the bank" too.. :) It feels kinda crazy that I've been a professional producer for 4-5 years now and this is the first time I am finding out the magic of low- & high-pass filtering. Even our mixing teacher didn't teach these things. So I really had to do some digging to improve my sound. I asked colleagues and watched KZbin tutorials. Your video was THE FIRST to suggest using low-passing on some of the vocals too.

Great video. I was wondering where the vocal distortion was coming from and then you got around to telling us. I have always like vocal distortion. When I listen to Paul Rodgers on the Free stuff or when I hear it on old Beatles songs or Zeppelin, it just sounds like magic and character all day long. I just stumbled onto a video titled "Deconstructing Something (Isolated tracks)". When John Lennon doubles George Harrison's vocals on the bridges, especially the last one it sounds like the VU meters were going to crack the glass and in the context of the song it's cool. I think that is a crucial element of a lot Classic Rock. Of course, the pristine digital clarity available today has its place too, but I really envision the engineers in the early Rock days as using gain and distortion artistically like any guitarist would which still seems to be the case today. It's an art in itself.

This is great...thanks for the tutorial, very helpful. Could you possibly create a video talking about making great vocals when it comes to singing verses (where we usually hear one main vocal only) rather that the chorus (which usually uses more layering and harmonies)?? This would be EXTREMELY helpful because there's not many that talk about this. Thanks for your vids! Cheers!!!
