The hole is originally there to help the air be let in/ out of the container when necessary

as the popped kernels have more space in between for the unpopped kernels, they naturally fall to the bottom when shaken. this is why you're always stuck with the unpopped kernels at the bottom even when not using this method.

You can also use the opening or if you open a little more and put your extra butter and salt in it and then pinch it closed and shake it it’ll get it all throughout the popcorn. It works better than doing it in a bowl
