I knew a fair bit of that (I wrote the book Midwest Maize and I lecture on corn history) -- but I loved learning the word "to-to-po-ca." But yes -- much earlier than sweet corn (which was developed by the Iroquois in the 1600s). However, though early, popcorn headed south and didn't make it to North America until the 1800s. But one of my favorite snacks.

Corn ancestor is the teocintle plant native from Mexico, that was used to make "Teocintle Popcorn" 10,000 years ago... is the oldest form of popcorn. Later they managed to develop the corn plant from the teocintle and in addition the popcorn about 8,700 years ago.

I'm so glad I googled this title's exact phrasing. An excellently composed video. I still wonder, are those little pockets each an exploded plant cell? Or are they just a product of the starch liquefying and bubbling due to boiling, the cells not even being recognizable?

It's quite amazing that the process of creating popcorn and the microscopic images go well with the creation of the universe and those images of the cosmic web. Maybe the universe was a seed and we are all just inside a giant universe sized popcorn puff 😵💫🥸🤓🤔😋
