What's really nice about this film is that it's in the public domain so no edits are required. Same goes for many other older films that simply did not bother to renew copyrights. "His Girl Friday" with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, featuring Ralph Bellamy and Gene Lockhart also falls into this group. Great dialog, great acting and great story with no edits needed. Also, so glad you did this movie. It's so good! Gotta love how the creators of "You've Got Mail" paid homage by naming the bookstore this title. James Stewart is one of my all time favorite actors. He nailed every role and every character.

Charade is in the Public Domain and It's a Wonderful Life used to be. 75 Years was supposed to be the copyright length until 2003 but now it's 95 years. Ted Turner is actively stealing films out of the Public Domain by "remastering" them. He did that to Wonderful Life and Frankenstein among many others. It's nice they clean them up a little but that shouldn't give them a copyright for something they never originally made.

@@joelwillems4081 Once a movie is in the public domain, it nearly always remains there. The only way to regain the rights is if a company can prove that the movie is derivative of something else they own the rights too, ie the script the movie is based on. That's actually how A Wonderful Life was removed from the public domain. Remastering a film would not remove the original from the public domain, as the remaster would be derivative of the original movie, not vice versa.

Jimmy Stewart was married for 44 years to his one and only wife Gloria - a woman with movie star looks, but without movie star ambitions, which was fine by her husband. Jimmy was a very nice person, WW 2 veteran pilot and flew throughout his adult life. Never had any gossip in Hollywood because he led a normal life. My favourite actor.

From Wikipedia: According to her obituary in the Los Angeles Times, "Mrs. Stewart was active on the boards of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, Natural History Museum, African Wildlife Foundation and St. John's Medical Center, and was a regular at charity dinners, dances and other events supporting those groups. ... She shared her husband's interests in skeet shooting, fishing, animals and travel. A fan magazine in 1985 called their partnership 'Dream Factory's Outstanding Marriage'". From the 1950s onward, Mrs. Stewart was a supporter of conserving big-game animals, rather than hunting them, and in time brought her husband around to the same viewpoint.

I've been waiting for you to see this movie forever! One of my all-time favorites. The romance is really fun, but what surprised me was the warm subplot of the little family working for Mr. Matuschek. All the side characters with their quirks and their special part to play in the story. Mr. Matuschek's home troubles end up being very affecting -- my heart breaks for him every time he says "She said she wanted to grow old with me..." But the way his loyal employees rally around him during his depression is so nice to see. And then he passes on their kindness to the new boy who has nowhere to spend Christmas dinner...a great example of "Christmas spirit" that doesn't rub platitudes in your face. Klara and Klralik tease each other relentlessly and it's almost cruel, except that they can both take it. So satisfying to see them admit their love for each other. More romantic comedies that I think you and your sister would like: The Philadelphia Story (it has Jimmy Stewart AND Cary Grant) His Girl Friday (Cary Grant) The Thin Man (William Powell and Myrna Loy are the funniest and most adventurous married couple in the movies)

One was, The Shop Around The Corner and the second movie was, The Philadelphia Story. It was also the same day I watched, It Happened One Night. The cafe sequence is almost the same time length in both, (Ephron version is a few seconds longer) but Lubitsch used a total of 19 shots for that scene, whereas Ephron used 133 shots in She’s Got Mail. This is mainly because current film techniques often do not include having more than one character in the same shot- instead they constantly go back and forth with shots of each person individually. The older technique is to have characters react to each other in the same physical space, show full body images and it allows characters to act in unbroken takes, - the actors move around in scenes, entering, exiting, standing, sitting, changing positions which usually shows their internal state. The newer trend is to have mostly static shots of closeups of mainly faces that appear to create movement because they are edited so quickly. This often happens because the actors are not actually in the scene together and are acting one by one, saying a few lines directly to a camera. Audiences have become accustomed to their visuals lasting for only a few seconds and the recipe for filmmaking states that certain emotions should be portrayed for a specific number of seconds, but no longer. Older techniques also preferred to save closeups for emphasis rather than using closeups all the time. Think of how dramatic it is in It’s A Wonderful Life when Stewart/George first realizes he has to sacrifice his dreams, and when he finally kisses Mary, and his face as he prays in the tavern, and later when he realizes how terrible the new “Potter” reality is. If Capra has used closeups all the time, those scenes would not stand out as special moments.

@@Dej24601 The constant cutting bothers me, lol. Watched an episode of a show where there were 8 cuts in less than a second to characters who stood in a hallway talking. One of the cuts was a wide so you saw all of them. Why not just stick to it? That way we can tell by body language how they felt, see them going from one side to another as to indicate which side of the discussion they're maybe on? But no instead let's cut a million times and have them uncharacteristically announce it. If a normal water cooler chat has more cuts than a fight scene...

@@Dej24601 In fairness to today's directors, it must be remembered that most actors in the Golden Age had extensive stage experience (certainly true of Stewart and Sullavan) and were, therefore, able to sustain long takes and stay in character.

Started as a p.t. salesperson and ended as general manager of 5 stores. Our Mr. Manuchek was Mr. Rooten of Rootens Luggage & Gifts. There were so many simularities, very much the same type store and procedure wise. Yes he went to each store Christmas Eve and handed out bonus envelopes. Many fond memories!

Cool real-life background for you: Jimmy Stewart, Margaret Sullivan (the leads in this movie), and Henry Fonda had been best friends doing theater together on the East Coast when they were right out of college and starting their acting careers. 6:27 One of my favorite Broadway musicals, _She Loves Me,_ was adapted from the same Hungarian play that _Shop Around the Corner_ was made from. When the musical was revived in the 1990s, they actually added the movie's line "I think it will make music lovers out of cigarette smokers and cigarette smokers out of music lovers" into the script.

Since you have now seen You've Got Mail and Shop Around The Corner, you should react to two musical interpretations of this story. 1942's In The Good Old Summertime stars Judy Garland and Van Johnson and takes place in turn-of-the-century Chicago. 2016 had the Broadway revival of the musical She Loves Me. This is a filmed version of the live production and has a great cast with Zachary Levi, Laura Benanti, Jane Krakowski, and Gavin Creel. This musical more closely follows the story of Shop Around The Corner. It is also noted for its award-winning stage design with the outside of the shop opening up like a jewelry box to reveal the charming inside of the shop.
