In case you're wondering, the reason there are three endings is because they wanted to create a gimmick for people to go see the movie at the theatre more than once. Originally, depending on which theatre you went to/day you went to the movie, you'd get a different ending. When they released it on home media, this was during the days before DVD existed where they could simply have an options menu, so when the VHS was released they just altered the movie so that all three endings played one after the other at the end, like you two watched, and that became the standard version of the movie.

Newspapers used to list theaters and show times, for Clue they used an (A) (B) or (C) so folks could see all three endings. The movies themselves varied slightly to fit the particular solve but certain phrases (red herring) were in all three.

There's a fourth ending that never made it to the big screen, in which Wadsworth tells all the suspects that he secretly poisoned the champagne and they'll all be dead in three hours, then he escapes the house, only to be mauled to death by police dogs. As dark as that is, it's actually spelled out in a children's book adaptation of the movie...

It was also because you needed at least three players to play the game, and at the end, everyone made their guess as to who did it. This represented the reading of these at the end of the game, and of course, the actual envelope that told who did it.

He was great in the movie Legend (1985). Darkness was a way cooler character than Tom Cruise's character Jack. Too bad though that Darkness was evil and not good. He seemed to really love Mia Sara's character Lili. If I had directed the film, I would have changed the ending to Darkness renouncing his wicked ways after Lili showing him the error of his ways. Also Darkness and Lili together at the end and Jack is understanding of their love. He goes off into the forest on another adventure to hopefully to find his own love.

"It's a matter of life after death. He died and I got a life." Madeline Kahn steals this movie and every film she's in. That and the "flames on the side of my face" speech are some of my favorite lines from any film. Also, Tim Curry is hilarious running from room to room during his reveals, but he's also being true to the board game. In the game, if you want to make an accusation, you have to be in the room where you are saying that it happened. I love that detail.

Yes she does! The director was actually pretty strict with the script, there wasn’t very much improvising which seems crazy cause it really feels so natural but Madeline’s flame rant was improvised, the guys reactions were real, they did everything not to break character. Clue was patented in 1947. The creator saw people acting out murder mystery scenarios in their manor houses in the countryside during the war and designed a board game version of it. And when the movie was in theaters they released it with just one of those possible endings so people in different theaters would see different endings. When it went to home video they put all of the endings at the end.

Cluedo, was produced in 1944 by a Husband and Wife, the games company, Waddingtons, thought the name should rhyme with 'Ludo' ('I Play' in Latin) which was the most popular game at the time so they combined the names. Years later it was established in the U.S.A. and called by its original title of 'Clue' as 'Ludo' was well known in America.

I have loved this movie since I was a kid. As an adult, it still doesn't get old. There are so many funny quotes. The dry humor and physical humor are on point as well. Tim Curry is hilarious and the entire main cast shines. FYI, Debra Hill produced this movie. She helped John Carpenter make the original "Halloween" in 1978. Hence the name of the mansion, Hill House. When it was released in theaters, one of the 3 possible ending were shown at random around the country. Sadly, it bombed, but it has since become a cult classic. Another really good movie you ladies may consider is "Sleepy Hollow" from 1999 directed by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp.

It features a cast full of stars: *Peter Falk, David Niven, Peter Sellers, Alec Guinness, Maggie Smith, Truman Capote and Elsa Lancaster.* And while "Clue" is generally more on the silly side of things, I would consider "Murder by Death" to be truly funny _(with a little silly sprinkled inbetween)._

Fun fact. I think when it came out they released some versions with each of the different endings. It was before social media, so after a weekend, people would meet at work and find other people had seen a different movie ending and drive more curiousity on the film.

I know very little about this movie. FUN FACT: The singing telegram girl was Go-Go member singer and guitarist, Jane Wiedlin. For reference, she can be heard singing the line: "Hush my darling, don’t you cry. "Quiet angel, forget their lies," on the song "Our Lips Are Sealed."

Cassie, Carly, this is a most fantastic film for the two of you to watch together. There are so many insanely quotable lines in this film. The whole cast is fantastic. The two that stand out the most, or at least the two that give my favorite performances of the film are Tim Curry and Madeline Kahn.

When this came out to the theatres in 1985, different theatres were showing different endings. It wasn't until it was released on home video, that all three endings were available at the same time. NOW there are certain DVDs that not only allow you to choose which ending to watch, it also has the option to show a random ending, so you don't know WHAT ending you'll get.

This is one of my favorite comedies of all time! The jokes are so quick that you could miss them. Everyone killed it & all had a moment to shine. I’m glad you watched something with Madeline Kahn because she was a treasure, so funny & a very talented singer, you can hear it when they are singing when Mrs. Peacock is leaving. And Tim Curry is another one you need to see more of, he’s a hilarious. I won’t mention the 3 endings since it’s already been discussed but there are so many other fun facts about this movie. Like, there was very little improvising, everything was pretty much written on the page except for Mrs. White’s flame rant, that was completely improvised & along with the guys reaction, it’s the best scene in the movie for me. Also they completely designed the mansion just like in the game, down to where the rooms & passage ways are. Also all their cars are the color of their name, sadly you can’t tell as well since it’s dark & raining. And like you mentioned when you go back & re-watch it you can see the clues. And it was Mustard that put the evidence in the fire, he wanted to burn those pictures

This is the movie I can quote more than any other, cuz I've probably seen it more than any other as I was a kid when it started airing on HBO in the late '80s. I initially loved the mystery, and by the time I was a teenager in the late '90s, I loved the one-liners and humor. As an adult, I see what they are parodying when I go back and watch older Agatha Christie whodunits like Death On The Nile and Evil Under The Sun (Murder On The Orient Express goes without saying), and the brilliant The Last Of Sheila. This movie takes all of that influence and makes us laugh. Madeline Kahn, Tim Curry and Eileen Brennan are my VIPs but they are ALL perfection!

Eileen Brennon played the older woman, the killer in the second ending was also in a very similar who dunnit 11 years earlier with another allstar cast, called Murder By Death, and has some very funny moments in it also, especially with Peter Sellars, Peter Falk, David Niven, and James Cromwell, (now famous for Star Trek and "I Robot" with will smith) but the Butler is played by non other than Alec Guiness of Star Wars fame, he was the original Obi Wan Kenobi, a jedi. He plays a blind butler, there is a deaf mute cook and Truman Capote is their host.

A bit of info on some of the cast. Mrs Peacock was Eileen Brennan who was in The Sting (Paul Newmans lady friend who ran the brothel and picked the guys pocket on the train). Miss Scarlet was Lesley Ann Warren who among other fine performances played Cinderella in the (I think 1965 version) and if you haven't seen it you should watch. Mrs White was Madeline Kahn who was in Young Frankenstein and a bunch of other movies as well. Really a great cast all around. Don't know if you are familiar with the group The Go Gos but the singing telegram lady was Jane Wiedlen. Several of the others as well had really good success in movies and TV. As always you 2 are so much fun to watch. We all love Cassie, but it's twice the fun when we get to see Carly too.

When CLUE was first released in theatres, theatre-goers wouldn't see the three endings like you did, but would only see one of them. This was intended to create a buzz for the movie when people talked about it with other people who had seen it and discovered that they hadn't seen the same endings. They did a wonderful job translating the board game to a movie, not only incorporating the major characters (including the victim, Mister Boddy) but finding a way to create a backstory for each character and weave them together into a reasonably coherent plot. They included the secret passages (as you noted) as well as all the major rooms on the game board. Also, if you think about it, the way the game is played using cards, at the beginning the murderer card, weapon card, and location card are hidden in an envelope and the other cards are randomly dealt to the other players. The players ask each other questions to get each other to reveal the cards they have in an attempt to figure out which ones are missing. "One of us, wasn't here." This basic system of gameplay was incorporated into the movie such that in certain group shots, somebody is missing -- the murderer. 🙂 For such an array of characters, the plot gets a little too complicated for its own good and if you think too hard about it, you'll notice rather large holes in it, but of course, this is primarily a comedy so better if you don't think about it too hard and just enjoy the wacky antics. Fun fact, Madeleine Kahn (Mrs. White), classic funny lady extraordinaire completely ad-libbed the "flames... on the side of my face..." bit and the director thought it was so funny they ended up including it the film. You may have noticed her in movies like Young Frankenstein, What's Up Doc?, and Blazing Saddles. Sadly she passed away in 1999 Tim Curry (the Butler) is also a timeless mega star who has been in many movies and is still acting today, I believe you saw him in The Hunt for Red October, but he was also in Legend, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Three Musketeers, and a whole host of other pictures and shows.
