In regards to the water jug puzzle: Fill the 5-gallon jug. Use it to fill the 3-gallon jug, leaving 2 gallons in the 5-gallon jug. Empty the 3-gallon jug, and then pour in the 2 remaining gallons from the other jug. Fill the now empty 5-gallon jug and pour 1 gallon into the 3-gallon jug. There are 4 gallons left in the 5-gallon jug. Can't believe I still remember that! LOL

Ha thanks for the walk through of how they did it in the movie as never quite got that. I always did it in my head as 3gal front the 3gal into the 5, then refill the 3gal and pour 2 of it into the 5 (it can only take 2 more gal) leaving 1 gal in the 3gal. Then empty out the 5 and pour the 1gal in, plus another full 3gal gives 4gal. Probably more complicated but gets the same result so didn't understand why it didn't match any of the dialogue but makes sense if there's actually a couple of ways to do it lol

It's hard to understand written that way, but if I think of it as a serial dilution problem in my work lab, THEN it makes all the sense lol. I'm always having to mix two diverse solutions of different concentrations to arrive at an end product of a specific blended strength/concentration, which then insures it reacts properly and expectedly when dosed to another solution.

What I love about DH3 is that its not just 'a change' from the first one, but its a deliberate 'inversion' of the first. Its summer rather than winter, rather than being trapped in a small space, everything it too far apart, and rather than being isolated, McLane is stuck with someone he doesnt want to be with.
@RobertMorgan

Good point. They tried that in the following movies too, unfortunately the inversion of "let's do the opposite of what made the previous movies great" isn't as effective.

The writer of the film was interviewed by the FBI because when they were sent a copy of the script to review for security purposes, they realized that the basics of Simon's plan to distract the NYPD and burrow through to the money could actually work. He had to explain to them that every piece of information he'd used to plot it out was from publicly available sources and guided tours. They actually had to implement new security procedures at the Federal Reserve due to the movie so that this couldn't happen in real life. Also, this is easily the 2nd best Die Hard film, only falling short of "Die Hard" (1988) itself. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson were the duo we didn't know we needed, and Jeremy Irons is great as a villain.

Those kids with the boombox in the beginning of the film were also arrested and taken in for questioning. The kids had to explain that they weren't actually given a boombox by anyone who stole it, that they were only actors in a film. Still, the FBI had to implement new protocols as they now realised that some criminals could use that tactic in real life.

its crazy how people can gather from bits of random information. I remember a story that during the Vietnam war, a mission was being planned to rescue American POWs from a Vietnamese camp. All the facets of the mission were being meticulously organised in absolute secrecy. When eveything was almost ready, a few of the planners I guess were off duty and a random officer asked them "so whens the secret mission?" After much urgent shooshing and checking under tables and around corners for spies they cooly asked "what secret mission?" The guy explained he had just randomly picked up information in idle conversation he had with guys around the camp. Like "Doc can't come out with us tonight, they're expanding the casualty station and he's gotta organise that shit". Or "look I can't issue you that stuff, why? cause I got orders to hold onto em thats why". Little tidbits like that and pretty soon the entire camp was buzzing about this apparent secret mission that was gonna go down.

Agree this is the 2nd best of the 3 Die Hards. Only 3! The problem I had with #2 was why would they bring a high profile prisoner like that to a civilian airport? Andrews AFB is right there. In fact there are about 100 civilian airports in the area they could have diverted all those planes to.

One of the coolest aspects of this film that the other movies don't have is that you finally get to see John McClane in his home environment with his colleagues. His whole precinct is almost as daring and brave as he is. It shows what kind of man McClane would have to be to keep up with a department like that. I would've love to have seen a spinoff TV show with all those characters solving crimes around NY and they could just say that John was on suspension to write him out for budget reasons.

This film was so New York City, the cast and crew went out of their way to make this film live and breathe pre-911 NYC; it was essentially and love letter to my home city! This Die Hard, being a top tier action film, really captured the NYPD(despite the “gullibility”) in one of the best lights the department ever had(my old job). This third installment of Die Hard legit fired on all cylinders to make it, critically acclaimed, the best in the franchise, even till today.

Funny thing is that the original script for a 3rd Die Hard film was called Troubleshooter. But they didn't go with it because the story was WAY too similar to Under Siege starring Steven Segal. Which is ironic when you consider that script would be used for SPEED 2 (and look how that disaster turned out...). So the script used for THIS movie, actually happened to be an idea for a Lethal Weapon sequel, but the cast and crew didn't go with it because they felt it was treading the same ground from the first two movies. So it was later re-purposed into this film. And boy, after a rewatch, I can see several similarities. Having said that, I'd say it's even a miracle a third movie was even made.

The first Die Hard was based on a novel called “Nothing Lasts Forever”, by Roderick Thorp, which I’m pretty certain was set at Christmas time. The script for “Die Hard 2: Die Harder” was actually originally intended to be “Commando 2”, but got switched at the last second. “Die Hard With a Vengeance” was based off an already existing screenplay called “Simon Says”, in which they wedged John McClain into the plot. “Live Free or Die Hard” was based off a Wired article from 1997, called “A Farewell to Arms”, by John Carlin. In fact, the only Die Hard movie to have an original screenplay, originally planned as a Die Hard entry was the fifth (and by far worst) film, “A Good Day to Die Hard.”

The first four Die Hard movies are actually all adapted from unrelated books with the main character changed to John McClain, the 5th Die Hard movie is the first and only original screen play. The book 'Simon Says' which was used for Die Hard with a Vengeance was also considered to be used for Lethal Weapon 4, so imagine this movie with Riggs and Murtaugh.

Funny fact - for my childhood this was the only Die Hard movie we had. I don't even remember why we had it, I think it was just on a VHS somebody had recorded for us. The other movie on that tape was Terminator 2. So for most of my childhood I just basically watched those sequels over and over again. So, to me, they are the main movies - they stand alone pretty well! (It's also responsible for me having a huge crush on Jeremy Irons as a kid lol.)

4 is very watch-worthy. I only find it to be a minor step down from the first 3... if it wasn't a John McClane movie being held against it's predecessors, it would be a very watchable action flick on it's own merits. Because it IS a John McClane movie, and not even close to the worst, I would enjoy seeing them get that far at least. I would also, for shits n giggles, enjoy watching them view the 5th installment... which I don't hate... it's just so bad in comparison to the rest, and not that special overall.

This is the quintessential example of a great action movie, similarly with the first. They work so well because the bad guy is smart, interesting, and charismatic with complex motivations, not just cool good guys. The bad ones have an over the top evil boring bad guy. Jeremy Irons and Alan Rickman, it hardly gets much better than that. The bad guy actors should be as good as the good guy actors. This was the first Die Hard to give John a partner and Samuel L was obviously a great choice. I had seen 1 & 2 before but this was the first one I saw in the theaters and it was such a fun movie. When he finally said Yippee Ki-Yay at the end the whole theater cheered.

What’s crazy is how this production took place during golden era of the Law and Order series, with both filming in NY at the same time. Honestly this whole film feels like a big budget episode of Law and Order. What’s really crazy is the majority of this cast and crew have appeared on Law and Order in some capacity (Sam Jackson most notably). The whole police squad (Walter, Charlie, Joe, Connie) are my favorite side characters. Every scene with them, I keep expecting Lennie Briscoe and Ray Curtis to wander in from the 27.

In case you were curious for the explanation for the riddle to get exactly 4 gallons from a 5 gallon jug and 3 gallon jug (there are actually multiple ways to solve this but here's one that comes to mind real quick). You fill the 3 gallon jug all the way to the top and you pour it into the 5 gallon jug. You fill the 3 gallon jug up again and you pour it into the 5 gallon jug (containing 3 gallons already) until it reaches the top. This leaves you with 1 gallon left in the 3 gallon jug (since you had to pour 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug to fill it up). You pour out the entire 5 gallons and you transfer the 1 gallon that was left in the 3 gallon jug to the empty 5 gallon jug. This leaves you with exactly 1 gallon in a 5 gallon jug. You fill up the 3 gallon jug to the top and you pour it into the 5 gallon jug which leaves you with exactly 4 gallons. Love you reaction videos btw, especially the Count of Monte Cristo one.
