Yep, this is true. Ken was robbed by 8 meters. He would have been the only man to win the trifecta, Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans all in the one year. He not only lost the race, but he lost his rightful place in History. And yes, he did die with his son watching. Sometimes, life robs us and there is no justice.

But I would say life does sometimes comes back to even the books. Ken Miles has a movie dedicated to his story with countless millions more (outside of the racing sphere) knowing who he is. Him, his son, his wife and his story are now immortalised in film. I'd say that's some good compensation.

These are the rules of Le Mans, the winner is not the one who arrived first, but the one who drove the longest distance, and so yes Ford took the victory from Ken, but they discussed it in advance, before Ken got behind the wheel, and in reality he did not try to leave the other riders, and without hesitation was a team player.

Some Interesting facts about Ken Miles: He did his first race age 11 on a 350 cc Triumph bike. He first met Mollie when he was 15 after meeting her he turn to a friend and said "I'm going to marry that girl". He also built his first car at age 15, an Austin 7 and Mollie painted it British racing Green. He served in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers during WW2 reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. He came ashore on D-day but also he was one of the first British soldiers to reach Bergen Belson concentration camp but never spoke about the experience. He really was incredibly sarcastic and had no tact which infuriated almost everyone except Carol Shelby who loved his straight talking manner.

The reason this hits so hard is twofold. Firstly it's a 100% true story. Ken & Carrol really did jibe like that. Ken really did die while testing after Le Mans. They took a few creative liberties however to keep the pacing. Ken Miles did not need to win the 24 Hours of Daytona in order to drive the GT40 at Le Mans. He already drove for Ford the previous year. Josh Lucas portrayed Leo Beebe brilliantly for how it was written. However most signs point to Miles & Beebe butting heads a few times but their hostilities were grossly exaggerated in this film. But it's kinda hard to drive a plot forward with no one to root against. Very few movies work without an antagonist. Second, and more importantly. Hollywood is creatively bankrupt and has been for some time. It's nothing but squeals, superheros and cash grab movies nowadays. Ford v Ferrari is one of the best character driven, character arcing and relationship building movies we've seen in decades. While based on historical events it does a pretty masterful job giving car people a "car movie" while simultaneously allowing anyone else who doesn't care about the car stuff to still come along for the ride and enjoy it as well.

Ferrari Racing's success was due to Enzo Ferrari's ability to spot talents. He started as a racing driver and even had moderate success, but he was smart enough to change course when he realized that he had the gift of spotting talents in every department that makes up a successful racing team, from drivers, car designers, crew etc. That also explains why he considered Ferrari Racing as his pet, or even his life; Ford's offer to run it was at odds with the very reason for Ferrari Racing's existence. In fact when he started Ferrari Cars for making and selling road-legal cars, he said it was a a cynical way to get money from those clueless fanboys for him to run Ferrari Racing.

" It took Les Schwarb two days to change my brakes" and "Race-car-ing" Are my favorite quotes! Lol. One definition of a good movie is one that makes you care about or learn of something you had no interested or understanding of; Ford vs Ferrari is about the cars, the drivers (Ken), the companies (Carroll Shelby) and the CEO's and not necessarily in that order. Ford beating Ferrari at LeMan's was unheard of & would set the racing world on its head. That's what Henry Ford II "The Deuce" wanted at any cost. Nascar is all about turning left at the highest speed possible (no disrespect to Nascar) . LeMan's is a 24 endurance race with one car and multiple drivers (theoretically). Le Man's is on roads that curve, have bends, rises and falls and have different demands of a driver than Nascar (which approaches speeds over 200 mph.) An original 1968 GT-40 sold for 11 Million $ recently. The cars are iconic.

I paid my money 3 times to watch Le Mans ‘66 ( released in the UK as that as we Brits have been going since 1923 and winning since ‘24 ). I am born and bread in South Birmingham, about 12 miles from Ken Miles was born and raised and for my eternal shame didn’t know we were fellow Brummies!

My Dad is a HUGE Ford fan and this was the last movie we watched together at a cinema before he died. As a huge car guy they TRULY captured what it feels like to be behind the wheel of a car you love. "The perfect lap" is such a real thing and I hope on day to have the money to have my foot to the floor in my dream car going lap after lap chasing that. 4:13 is not a stupid question and the answer is "It depends". If we are talking F1, the car plays a HUGE role, you can be the best driver in the world but not even Schumacher could win if the car wasnt up to scratch. If you are talking stock car racing or class racing like in this movie, NASCAR, rally, etc then the driver is almost always the most important factor. Sure the car can help but the driver is what truly matters. 5:47 Heh it IS a good race driver name. 13:31 Ken Miles was a once in a lifetime sort of driver - he had something that cant be learned or taught and the automotive world lost a lot of knowledge the day he died. 25:55 It takes like an hour tops to change all the brake pads on every car I've owned in my driveway with basic tools. Your garage is lying to you.

That whole ending is tough. I was in some kind of shock, denial, and frustration the 1st 2 times I saw it. But watching your reaction just now made it really hit hard. There are times you make the experience of watching a film stronger and better and this was one of them. Bless your heart, Cassie. Your heart is something that reminds me of my own. And that's a special thing, I think. Thank you.

When I originally watched the movie, I didn't notice how many times they hinted that he was going to die in a crash. There were a lot of notice but I was still shocked with the ending. They really make that character grow on you. Says a lot about the man in real life too I'm sure.

I love watching Cassie's reactions because she falls in love with the heroes of these movies so much so, that she's helplessly crushed when something bad happens to them. This movie is a prime example of how she couldn't even hold back the tears when Ken died. For minutes she tried to compose herself and she just couldn't do it. I love that about her and this is why I love her channel. She brings her heart and soul to her reactions and it makes it all the more enjoyable to watch. Love your heart Cassie, keep it up!!

Loved this movie too. Watched it for the first time with my dad. I cried at the end too. I also loved the part at the end of the race where Mr. Ferrari tips his hat to Ken in respect despite the other guy being celebrated as the winner. He knew who really won.
@TetsuoVI3 жыл бұрын
OMG, you're just the cutest. You had me at "race-car-ing." Oh that was so good, as well as the the comment about Schwarb taking two days for your brakes, my sides hurt so much. As others have mentioned, "Rush" is another excellent race-car-ing movie. (see what I did there...) It may not make you as emotional at the end but the writing and acting is second to none, much like this movie. I know it seems cruel to end the movie as it did, but please think of it from Ken's perspective. He died doing something he loved and as twisted as it might seem, his family was there to see and appreciate that, through all that pain and loss. Similar as to what Shelby said earlier, there are very few people with the fortune, drive, and downright luck to die doing what they love and were born to do. We all could only be so lucky as Ken. Perhaps my favorite reaction of yours yet. Thanks for the wonderfully emotional ride.

I've been racing cars for 23 years. The basic belief is that racing is 80% driver, 20% car. However, at the highest professional levels, the drivers are all SO good, that in many cases the 20% associated with the car makes the difference. However, if you put somebody without racing experience in a superior car versus somebody with a lot of experience in a poor car..... the more experienced driver would win every time.
@modelcitizen19773 жыл бұрын
Truth. Even the slowest driver in Formula 1 is insanely good.
@coltonpiper61563 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting. I am not a racer and don’t follow the sport at all, but I would have thought that once you get to a high enough level all the cars have to be similar in ability. So then it would come down to the driver.

I used to do track days at Spring Mountain Raceway in Nevada with the local Porsche club, and it was fascinating to watch first timers to performance driving have their expectations and egos blown away by the reality of it. 911 Turbos, Corvettes, and in one memorable session a Gallardo being utterly humiliated by modified first-gen Miatas. One Mustang or Camaro might be holding everyone up going so slow, but somebody in an identical car would be setting he fastest lap times of the day. I drove a moderately modified Scion FR-S at the time, and was amazed at the cars I could keep up with or even pass, but there was a driver there who drove a less modified version of my car that was significantly faster than me.

@@davidmcleod5133 I race a Honda Civic with a K24 transplanted from an Acura TSX. When I run in the regular track days I can lap with the 911 GT3s, Corvette Z06s, etc. It's all about the skill level of the driver.

Enzo Ferrari was called the Assassin because more drivers died driving for him than for any other team. He couldn't have cared less for safety. Many drivers turned him down when he offered them jobs, because the prestige of driving for Ferrari wasn't worth the risk. The risk was incredibly high as it was. During a racing season -- including all types of racing -- a driver was killed every day. The same year as this race, the Scottish driver Jackie Stewart crashed and was badly injured in a Formula 1 race, and there was no medical staff, no ambulance, no first responders on the scene. After that, he became the most vocal advocate for safety, and he prevailed. Within a few years, risk had decreased dramatically. The 1966 racing season was chronicled in the movie Grand Prix. It was fictionalized, but it included a lot of real race footage. Fantastic movie.

For the most part, yes, but there were definitely some liberties taken for the sake of narrative. For example, Miles did not set the fastest time in qualifying or the fastest lap during the race, like the movie claims, those were both achieved by Dan Gurney in one of the Ford cars that didn't finish.

So sad seeing Ken Miles and Lorenzo Bandini at Le Mans in 1966 in this film. Those of us who are motorsports history buffs know that sadly, less than a year later, they both would be dead. The movie shows Ken's death while testing the J-car at Riverside Raceway in August of 1966. Unfortunately, just 9 months later, Bandini would be killed during the Monaco Grand Prix in May of 1967... I feel more watching a reaction like this than I do watching a movie on my own. Too many years competing to be emotionally detached like guys are too often expected to be. Watching someone so emotionally invested have a movie stick a knife in and maybe give it a twist helps keep me grounded, but it hurts just a bit more to watch a sweet person torn up, even just a little. As people in the comments say - never change ma'am.
