People are very attached to their dogs, loving them as much as would a child. There's a number of movies in which the the death of a dog spurs the hero to finally abandon all restraint and punish the villain. In building up the evilness of a villain in a story, it's terrible that they do horrible, illegal crimes, but the final straw that really condemns them to their fate is harming an innocent. Even among the roughest of bad guys, there's still an understood idea that you don't harm defenseless innocents like the old, the frail, women, children, and especially dogs who in their good natured innocence would be friendly to anyone. Any criminal who shows himself willing to harm defenseless innocents as marked himself deserving of death. In the movie "Open Range" the character played by Robert Duvall is an old, stoic, tough cowboy who has probably seen and endured near everything imaginable. When he's reciting all of the evil acts the villain has committed, it's not until the end of the list, when he says the villain "killed our dog" that his voice cracks, he gets choked up, and is struggling to hold his emotions in check and not cry.

@@phellips10 You literally just defined "anti-hero". An antihero (sometimes spelled as anti-hero) or antiheroine is a main character in a story who lacks conventional heroic qualities and attributes, such as idealism, courage, and morality.
