My adult stepson was home during Christmas. As the family was getting prepared to go to Christmas Mass, my son was sitting on couch with his dog. Asking if he was going with us, he said no. I sat down next to him to say I pray for him nightly & heaven will not be heaven unless he is there, & I wanted him to know that. I hope that tiny mustard seed takes root & grows. Spot on Dr. Martin. I had a profound conversion experience 16 years ago in Medjugorje and can testify to the reality of hell. Jesus through Mary freed me from the bondage of sexual sins to save my marriage and my heart has been on fire since that conversion. ❤

Thank you, so very much, for this talk today, and for sharing the link to your article in the National Catholic Register. I am a convert to the Catholic Church from protestantism, specifically Lutherism. I look back over my life, grateful for God’s faithful prodding me along, always providing for me, whatever I’ve needed to learn, He has made sure to provide whatever I’ve needed to help me understand what I need to know, whether it’s to warn me, challenge me, encourage me … When a faithful priest offered to talk with me about being received into the church, which he did on Christ the King Sunday, 11/22/2015, I knew I was coming into the church not because of Pope Francis but in spite of him, since there have been things he’s said, from early on, that have troubled me. Also troubling since the early years of this pontificate, have been the knowledgeable Catholics who have felt they must “explain” to the rest of us why what I heard him say, wasn’t really what he said or meant to say. Often blaming the translation to English or how a reporter reported what was said. I’m sure my look was often similar to this: 😳 and my reaction was: “really? Are you serious?” It’s been exhausting. There are just too many troubling things he has said, and the people he keeps close to him, good grief. … perhaps I would do better to not pay such close attention to what goes on 😉 but in today’s world, with the way “information” is shared so easily, it’s pretty hard not to see what’s going on. Years ago, I decided to buy a used catechism for $2.00 at “book fair” for a charity fundraiser at work, about 15+ years ago. I was still a lutheran when I bought it and I started reading it. It definitely played a big role in my “journey home” to the Catholic Church. I’m grateful to have this precious resource that clearly explains exactly what the church teaches. … still my heart is often troubled by what Pope Francis says and does not say. I have not wanted to pray for him, knowing with my head I need to do this, I am guilty. It’s hard not to be upset with him. Thank you for this teaching today, and for your other teachings that remind me to keep my focus on my need to be faithful, repentant, and trusting of Jesus. I know, no matter what is going on around me, I will find peace in Christ. Thank you for encouraging me to be ready and willing to share with others, the reason for the hope that is in me. I'm not a theologian. I'm not even as bright as I'm sometimes made out to be. So I try to see things without all the clutter and one thing I do know, Christ spoke about Hell a lot. More than anyone else in the Bible. That tells me all I need to know about the question of whether or not it exists. As far as who goes there, that seems to be a self-choice and I know I'm not in on that decision where others are concerned. But here's the thing, and there really is no getting around this; if Hell isn't real, and if souls aren't in peril, why would there have been a need for Christ to come into the World? He didn't come to amaze people and then die and rise again like some cosmic grand finale. He came to save souls. Again, trying not complicate the matter, what do we need to be saved from if everybody gets a pass? Beyond all else, that is as Spock would say, illogical captain. But hey, maybe I'm wrong. Like I say, I never claimed to be the brightest bulb in the fixture, but I like to think I'm smart enough to know where the light resides and who to believe.

This is a very important and needed explanation of Church teaching especially given the popes publicized views on the subject. It raises the question though, where are the voices of the bishops and cardinals speaking with clarity and offering the needed correction of the pope's confusing statements? Why did the National Catholic Register ask Ralph to write an article of the Church's teaching on Hell, rather than one of the bishops or cardinals? Is it because they were asked and there were none who accepted the task? Ralph did an excellent job of providing teaching once again, teaching, one would think, would come from those with the mandate to provide it. As valued as Ralph's teachings are, the average lay person should not have to rely on searching the internet for the offerings of other laymen on these matters. The bishops and cardinals need to begin once again to step up and do the job that was entrusted to them. Thank you Ralph taking on this task.

A time like I've never read...my friends and their friends and family when death is reality....now what gets me is this...they ALL are saying..."heaven has gained another angel." They died and went to heaven! Now I know the lives that they have lived. No Church, No confession, no love of neighbor and the list goes on....now I live my life ONLY for Christ and I have become an outcast....be with others, Christians, some love...I preach teach live the gospel. One positive outcome of this confusion is that the reality and Biblical teachings on hell are being discussed. It’s an uncomfortable subject that we seldom want to think about. Yet when we stop and search out the matter for ourselves… it brings a serious examination of our own hearts and a more serious attempt to evangelize… there is a virus of universalism unleashed … we must repeat only the words of Jesus concerning hell… otherwise we, too, can be deceived..✝️🙏

I was told about the reality of hell before my conversion. My presupposition that hell didn't exist was challenged when I was asked "Are you so sure hell doesn't exist?" and I had to say "No, I'm not that sure" and this, I think, helped me to convert to the faith.

There is a delightful account in “Brideshead Revisited” where Rex Mottram, who has agreed to take instruction and to enter the Catholic Church, so that he can have a Church Wedding with Julia Flyte (even though he has no interest in the Faith at all) is asked by the Priest who is giving him instruction “Suppose that the Pope were to say ‘it looks like rain today’ and then it doesn’t, rain, that is. How would you explain that?’ “Well” replies Rex Mottram, eager to oblige, “I suppose that it would be raining spiritually, but I was just too sinful to see it.” The poor Priest realises that he is never going to get anywhere! For many, even Catholics with some knowledge of their Faith, the Pope is the repository of the Catholic Faith. Everything which he says and does, they suppose, expresses the Faith. So, if Pope Francis states that he, personally, likes to believe that there is not actually anyone in Hell, many people, even some Catholics would be likely to say to themselves “Well, if the Pope says it, there must be some truth in it.” It doesn’t work both ways, though. If a Bishop or Cardinal says that he likes to believe that Pope Francis is not really an authentic Pope (so that his efforts to create ambiguity and confusion might simply be ignored) he will not receive the same understanding from the Pope as the Pope expects to receive from the Faithful when he says that he likes to think that a central teaching of the Catholic Faith is not in fact true. The only hope for the Church is that, if we give the Pope enough rope, he will hang himself. To some extent, our main hope is that, since the Pope has surrounded himself with so many “yes men” who will not contradict him and has made it clear that he will “cancel” any member of the hierarchy who does question what he says, he will grow so confident that he may safely say and do exactly what he wants, without reference to the teachings of the Church, that, one day, he will go just that little bit too far and even his “yes men” will take several steps back and leave him to face the music alone.
