I mean during the time of St. Joan of Arc, it was at the end of the hundred years war so like early 1400's. The only major Christian denominations at the time were the Catholic and Orthodox churches so she was about a hundred or so years behind when Martin Luther published his 95 theses. I wouldn't say it's fair to quote her here since the Lutherans and other protestant groups had very different reasons for splitting from the church than the Orthodox whose reasons was more so cultural than theological. Who knows how her perspective would've changed.

The best example probably being the Hussites in Bohemia, but also smaller movements that the people of France at the time would have been familiar with. The Catholic church had also started to split culturally the same way it did with the Orthodox church, especially in England, Scandinavia and Hungary, which while not being the main reason would definitely fuel the fire during the reformation

@@Krolted The term Lutheran was coined by Johann Maier von Eck and used derogatorily in the Leipzig debate of July 1519. Martin Luther preferred the term Evangelical but since that term was used by Huldrych Zwingli and the Reformed Church because it refers to the teachings of the Evangelists not to mention Anabaptists used the name too, Lutheran has been used as a self identifier since the mid 16th century. Today in English speaking countries Evangelical usually means "Charismatic" or "Born Again". Are you sure you're German? lol 🤔😆

@@Krolted I'm glad I could help, theology is fascinating and understanding the background of the Reformation is crucial regardless of our denomination it's something that has shaped history. Lutheran, Reformed and Anglican Protestants all contributed different views of the Scriptures, if you like Martin Luther the book (The Bondage of the Will) is Luther's favorite work of his own, you might find it interesting. My Mom's family are mostly Roman Catholic and my Dad's family are Protestants which has given me a unique perspective, keep researching remember Thessalonians 5:21! 🙂

This is certainly a time of great confusion. Pope Frantic most certainly does not represent the Catholic Faith. The True Church is One, Holy, Universal, and Apostolic. The Lutheran Church was founded by Martin Luther, and is not one, as it has split many times, not universal, because it is not in all times and all places, and not apostolic. Lutherans believe their church is the result of a reform- a reform of what? The true Church also has some other marks- It is persecuted. It defends the honor of Holy Matrimony. It defends the Honor of The Immaculate Heart. Does your church have those marks?

Martin Luther simply denied the authority of the pope. It will be impossible for Catholicism and Lutheranism to be one, neither their leaders to surrender their pulpits to one another, unless another reformation story is strong enough to call for the deposition of all human supremacy on fellow human on spiritual matters.

It's less straightforward than that but generally yes, if you're not given enough information on the Church then it's not your fault. Also the church has said that it will never claim that any individual is going to or is in hell but just generally what you need to accept salvation.

@@andrewcarpenter3991 Frankincense was one of the gifts brought to our Lord by the Three Magi, it was used in the Temple in Jerusalem and it's mentioned in Revelation 8:3-4 Lutherans use the normative principal of worship not regulatory incense and candles are permitted. Even New Light Presbyterians aren't that dogmatic about Calvin's personal views on the subject or banning instrumental music which is also not forbidden anywhere in the Scriptures by the way. (J.S. Although you need to remember that the primacy is a church tradition in which it is believed that St. Peter was the first Bishop of Rome who was martyred there. Peter was given the keys of heaven, NOT the authority of God himself and thus not seen as the equal of God in Catholism. Quoting the movie 'Two Popes' "the thing about being pope is to remember that you're not God". Also, some traditional churches outside of Catholism still uses incense which as the person above me mentioned is one of the three gifts. People have their own way of worship and to say that the instrument used by other Christians as 'smell of sulfur in hell' is promtly unchristian

For Rome in the Council of Trent made it very clear that to believe that one is justified solely and alone through faith in the merit of Jesus Christ without any works on our part is to be damned to hell. Now most RC aren't even aware of this teaching. It doesn't matter. Rome in its official doctrinal positions are further from Confessional Lutheranism then during the time of the Reformation. As a confessional Lutheran I lament this situation. None of what I have just said is to disparage any individual RCs. I am addressed the church's doctrinal position.

In German the precise description would be: "evangelisch-lutherisch". This is almost always shortened to "evangelisch" - for Germans it is clear what that means. When I started to learn English (I did this as an adult on my own, because I didn't had a chance to learn it in East-Germany), I was asked by Americans to what denomination I belong. I created confusion when I said "Evangelical". That term in English means obviously something very different. "Lutheran" is in English the only correct way to translate the German "evangelisch-lutherisch". I now try to learn Spanish and it will seem to me that it would be more precise, if ever asked, to answer "luterano" to the question in case, because I'm not sure if "evangélico" would be misunderstood.

I wanted to add that you are very right as far as the German translations are concerned. I don't have the time to translate them, although I would like to (but you seem to understand German). They seem to be very shortened and taken out of context anyway. The presenter is by the way totally misleading the audience in maintaining that the young Germans had tried to trip Francis up with trick questions. That's utter nonsense. Those were serious questions about faith that you would expect on occasions like this one.

Having inter-denominational dialogue is a good thing, but the most important thing is not to be a "true follower of Christ" if "true follower" means having a thousand different variables. Christ founded one Church, and that Church evolved under the guidance of the Holy Spirit over the centuries, to be a Church of sacraments, laws, traditions, and devotions. These things are not "dead accretions" to the Gospels but exponents of them. The Reformation threw most of this out, focusing only on Scripture, yet the Church existed BEFORE the Bible did. Jesus and the first Christians didn't have Bibles, old and new Testaments. Authority for the first Christians came from some books of Scripture, and from sacred custom and tradition, and then eventually, the "Bible" as well. The modern tendency to say, "Oh, all Christian denominations are the same.", misses a lot.

A really good question actually, but the wrong question, because no one is better than the other. Perhaps the better question asked could've been 'How satisfied are you with what you believe. Do you have a sense of inner peace?' I think that would've generated a lot of positive discussion. Also, I don't think it was a joke - it was a serious question to make challenge people to think about how they view themselves and others. Only God can answer this question. Who do you think God would favour most? Could it be the formation of the Catholic church, or the protestant reformation of the church, which in my opinion is barren and empty? Only God can answer. But people nowadays are steeped in Reformation culture, so the moment the Pope or a religious does something we don't like, we don't hesitate to denounce them as a heretic rather than giving them a chance. If Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant churches all believe in the same Father, Son, and Holy Spirit... couldn't they all get more accomplished, and have a stronger ministry... if they quit judging each other, and instead start looking for common ground, where it exists? And if the Christian faith is losing ground to other religions, and to atheism, could it be because of the constant bickering and infighting between the denominations? I am NOT proposing a one-world religion.
