I love the part where Bluto sees Popeye, Olive, and Swee'Pea all in red with fury and that they actually had the actors wear red and dressed the set in all red just for that quick shot... it's not an optical effect or lighting trick... it's all in-camera. @0:42

Something I never noticed as a kid was the tonal difference in the movie before and after Popeye and Olive connect. When Popeye is alone, the movie is kind of depressing in this little shanty town. When Olive pulls a runaway bride, runs into Popeye and they find Swee' Pea, the rest of the movie is funny, the mood lightened and the cartoon-level gags started hitting. I don't know if that was on purpose or if it was intentionally set to show that Popeye's life is better when he's not a wandering, solitary sailor. This movie is so full of charm and it's a shame it hasn't gotten the same attention as other older pop culture movies.

I was a professional circus clown back when Popeye came out. This movie was greatly admired by me and my fellow clowns for the delightful quality of the slapstick. Bill Irwin, who played Hamgravy, was a particular favorite of ours and came from our world, so that was thrilling. He and so many others in this film were just great and I see Popeye as a wonderful film with many touches that make it impeccable.

The Popeye movie is not "Not That Bad" ... I think it is actually really good. I don't care what anyone says. I loved it as a kid, and I find it to be an adorable movie to watch as an adult with good direction. It's a movie that's pretty spot-on with representing the source material if you ask me. And Robin Williams and Shelley DuVall knock it out of the freakin' park as Popeye and Olive.

I agree 100%, and I also like the subtle character development of Pappy starting when he rescues Swee Pea from the boat, restoring his proper father figure motives, thus helping Popeye properly defeat Bluto. As for the Bluto himself, I don't look at that one punch by Popeye as anticlimactic, I feel like that one punch was strong enough to make Bluto's life flash before his eyes, making him regret everything that he ever did.

You hit the nail on the head -- it was true to the source material, i.e. the comic strip. I think that was both its biggest selling point, and its biggest drawback, because lots of folks assumed it was going to be based on the cartoon.

I love this movie. Always have. I think at the time the critics savaged it because there used to be a stigma about television actors versus film actors. The perception was that people who worked on television shows weren’t good enough to be in movies. Robin Williams was known for being Mork from Ork. This was his first film. It was an expensive movie to make and there are many stories about what went down during the making of this film. However, I think it was perfectly cast and if it had come out a decade later I think most critics would have been more favorable towards it.

The treasure doesn't come out of nowhere. Bluto had kept the Commodore captive for years because the Commodore had been leading him on about a secret treasure and its location. This is the reason why Popeye has been searching for him for so long. Bluto kidnaps Sweetpea in order to use him to locate the treasure. However in the end the "treasure" is really just memories and keepsakes of his son Popeye when he was a baby. The reason why the ending was so abrupt is because they had delays with the mechanical octopus (not unlike another set on water movie from the '70s) and Paramount was going to shut down the production.

One of the rare live action musicals that I actually like. It’s a classic to me. I remember going to see this flick at the theater as a kid. As for Popeye being able to whip Oxblood and assorted thugs while losing to Bluto, that’s actually how the Fleischer Bros. cartoons used to portray Popeye. He was already tough with incredible superhuman level strength but he always had issues with Bluto until he ate his spinach.

Altman described it perfectly when he said the video was "a good babysitter." This was one of two kid-friendly tapes my grandmother kept at her apartment when I was little; the other being Annie. For most of my childhood I was literally raised on this movie and I loved it. IMO it's the best example of a cartoon world brought to life. I can only imagine the reason for it still having a bad reputation, has to do with the all around "goofiness" of the picture. But that's the idea! It's a live action cartoon! I love that Sweet Haven still stands, too!

I put it in the same camp as the _Flintstones_ movie: You can argue all day whether or not it was a good idea to make a live action adaptation in the first place, but it's pretty hard to argue they aren't exactly what a live-action adaptation of the cartoon _should_ look like.

Williams really showed his actor chops in Popeye. I think much the budget problem goes back to how overbuilt the Sweethaven set was, and from when it was made, there was a lot spent on partying and nosecandy. The casting was as near perfection as it could be. The end of the film was the most nothing since 1927s Metropolis.

I think the bad sound editing really did it in. I remember it as the "movie of mumbling." 75% of the dialog i couldn't understand. Many theaters at the time were very old - with aging, barely-stereo, crackly, popping sound. I remember saying "Mom - what's wrong with his face? Whats wrong with his arms? What's that scary big guy so angry about?" Most of the jokes were funny only to adults. (Kids didn't even know they were jokes.) Popeye wasn't broadcast much on TV... leaving kids like me completely lost as to what the heck was going on. Things crashed, imploded, and threat of violence kept it from being funny to me. I asked my parents if we could go home.

Do you know the link between Wimpy and Sweet Pea? It is called the Red Ball Cafe (sadly now closed), in Albuquerque, New Mexico (yes, it is a state in the United States). Driving cross country, on old Route 66, the animators would often travel together, and stop there. Two of their burgers, The Wimpy Burger (it has green chilly), and The Sweet Pea Burger (identical, but without green chilly) were their favorites. So, as a nod to their favorite road-trip dining establishment, they named two characters after their burgers. Hence Wimpy having a thing for burgers. The Red Ball Cafe, did have one of, if not the world’s largest collection of Popeye memorabilia, including many wall paintings, some of which were (according to the owners) done by some the actual Popeye artists, and have been signed. Currently the place is sitting, closed, but still intact, with its collection also sitting intact.

I saw "Popeye" the movie when it first came out...twice in the theaters. I have loved it ever since. Altman and all involved really captured the feel and the look of the Fleischer cartoons which I had grown up loving. It's very slapstick, a little silly and has the same manic action that those cartoons had. My kids also came to love it. I will say this for the movie; In the cartoons and comics I never quite got why Popeye loved Olive Oyl, but after seeing Shelly Duval take the role it became obvious. To me, what makes this one stand out over other cartoon based movies, is the great chemistry and relationship between Robin and Shelly as Popeye and Olive.

I remember my Dad (RIP) bringing me and my brother (7 and 4 years old respectively) to the theater when the movie came out. Of course we loved it. I recently rewatched it with my kids a few weeks ago (6 and 8 years old) and while they loved it, it was not as good as I remembered it. But I think somewhere in the footage, there is a good film that could be salvaged by an enterprising fan editor. It's not horrible by any means, but I would categorize it as a flawed masterpiece. There is a lot to like, the casting was very inspired (Shelley Duvall was born to play the part of Olive Oyl) and the visuals are amazing. But some of the songs are weak (but I give kudos to the rousing "I Yam What I Yam", where we see Popeye sing about his philosophy of life). but it also seems quiet throughout -- perhaps an orchestral score based on the theme music of the original cartoons might help. And I'm sorry to say, but Robin Williams is hard to understand at times. Perhaps fan editor can boost or clarify audio when Popeye is speaking.

Not that I'm a theater snob or anything, but it's got some toe-tappers in there. The opening Sweethaven song, Everything Is Food, and I'm Mean are great. I remember the first time seeing it and fell in love with it. Yes it was after the fact I had been watching the shorts but I never did think it didn't live up to the shorts. Now yes later on I did find out that it was based on the comic strip other then the shorts but it never ruined the aesthetic of the film or the characters. I even remember when my cousin asked if I had the movie (which I didn't) and thought he wanted to borrow my Popeye cartoon shorts tape but when I found out it wasn't the one he thought I was playing and told him I didn't have a copy of the film. I do still every now and then either catch myself singing some of the songs. I think this is one of the other best live action adaptation of a comic strip francihse and cartoon characters.

I live in Brasil. I've always been a Popeye cartoon fan (except the King Feature Syndicate version which I deem too violent). In a cathechism class, the teacher asked each student who was their biggest idol. The first student to reply said that his was Jesus. I noticed that after that the others had no courage to say otherwise and in succession each and everyone said the same. That made me angry and I stuck with mine which was Popeye! I found this movie a bit strange until I read Popeye's original comics format. In the cartoons, we don't get to know the whole world (I refuse to use the term universe) where Popeye and the other characters lived. The first time I watched Popeye on TV, I was about 4 years old. I was impressed by Bluto's loud, harsh and deep voice and asked my mom about his name. Since the cartoon was not yet dubbed into Portuguese, she said it was Caruso and for decades I thought that was his name.

Anyone that grew up with cartoons like Popeye, had to of loved how well this was adapted. The only thing bad about it, is that it shouldn't have been made live action to begin with. Its supposed to be a cartoon. But if you want to translate a cartoon to live action, you can't do much better than Popeye. This is what's great about One Piece. The two adaptations are very similar, and the one other similar was The Mask. All them were excellently made, but it's really debatable, SHOULD they be made.

Btw, in this video, the Mork & Mindy clip being shown (8:06) credited as "Mork & Mindy (1979) - CBS" is false; Mork and Mindy aired on ABC, not CBS. Paramount was the show's distributor, and was eventually purchased by Viacom (who owns CBS) over a decade later, however, the series was never on the CBS network during it's broadcast run.

Popeye is one of the best children's films of all time. Altman's style is a perfect fit for the toddler's psyche.

The issue with this movie more than anything is that ending. It's so bad that I remember being upset by it as a kid and it's still frustrating. It's a LOT of bad singing to endure for that low a payoff.

I used to not like this film but my partner loves it. I have grown to really like and understand the film better. Its more like the original comics rather that what I grew up with in the 70's. It really is a great film and soundtrack.

I love this movie as a kid I remember going to the theater to see it is the love watching the cartoons too. That’s what made me wanna go see the movie so bad it’s just like a lot of movies that are underrated another movie you could do that I think is really underrated the pirate movie with Kristy McNichol, that is a great movie that people are missing out on because no one talks about it

I always thought Popeye was a great movie and I liked all the musical numbers. I thought Popeye having a one-punch win against Bluto was a 2-fold solution to the ending fight (1) Most bullies fold after receiving a single punch, and (2) Popeye is not a bully and did not want to torture Bluto, rust remove him as a problem, and the single punch did that.

Harry Nilsson is the songwriter whom you could never tell if he was putting in zero effort or all the effort, and that was the best part. It takes brains to write stupid. "He needs me he needs me he needs me he needs me he needs me he needs me." "God must love us." "Once it lived on an animule, now it walks around with you, it is food, everything is food." "They can't trick us with no hot dog." "Children take your money and let you die without even paying you back." "I mean what I say and I say that I'm mean." "He's large." You couldn't write more skillfully written "bad songs" with a gun to your head, and they make everybody I show them to fall apart laughing.

Those plot holes - the movie was made to be watched with child-like wonder. The kids in 1980 (me) weren't scrutinizing over Sweet Pea having psychic powers, it was all just fantasy to watch, immerse, and enjoy. One of my favorite movies. Of course a grown adult in the world of Matrix movies is going to be able to pick it apart to find flaws.

Great analysis. I was seven when this film was released and I was disappointed at the time. At the time the Popeye cartoons from the 1950's on up with on continuously so for kids the formula was very familiar. This film seemed to be from another planet with numerous different characters and musical numbers. So while the screenplay tried to be true to the source material, it seemed to miss the mark with the kids at the time and made absolutely no impact in my circle of friends. 1980 was a good time being engrossed in Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Indiana Jones, Superman, Star Trek, Alien, etc. This one didn't cut it in comparison to those films or the cartoon. We all watched Mork and Mindy too and were huge Robin Williams fans so the expectation going in was huge. I started to appreciate it as I got older, but it essentially plays like a Broadway musical to me.

I watched this movie for the first time a few years ago and really liked how well it managed to translate the feeling of the cartoon into live action. That being said, i don't need to hear Olive's "he needs me" song ever again

This movie is precious to me for personal reasons. It's always heart warming to come across someone else who's seen it liked it and remembers it. But I find that's rare. This meant a lot to me that you covered this in detail and with a level of appreciation I feel isn't shared enough for this film. Thank you.

The set was built by Italian crew , we used to feed them at the hilltop restaurant mellieha . Once filming started, we would do deliveries to the set .I remember they brought an old ship from Valletta, brought it to Anchor Bay, and sank it .Wow, that was 40 yrs ago

When I was a child in the 90s one of my fondest memories of my holiday to Malta was visiting the set of the movie, it was so cool being able to run around popeye's town.
