I remember seeing this as a kid quite a few times on HBO. Thanks for reminding me of it! Fun and interesting look back at. It's a shame it squandered a lot of potential here.

This was on regular rotation on HBO for us Gen Xers...alongside 'Grease 2' 'Saturday the 14th' and 'Poltergeist.' I loved it as a kid but in retrospect you're right...not only did it not age well but they didn't take full advantage of Chevy Chase's humor or Rollo's character arc.

A few years back, I read a review of Way Out West, that was written and printed in a magazine at the time when the film was new out, and the reviewer said (words to the effects of) "It's just the same tired, unfunny old Laurel and Hardy stuff, don't bother watching it". I didn't see the film until much later, of course (I wasn't born until 1970), but to me it's utterly hilarious, even now just watching the dance scene. Even back then, I suppose, there were reviewers who either didn't understand, or care about, actual quality. Stan and Ollie are timeless, and their comedy is clean, gentle, and still hilarious today. I'm still really upset that they never made a sequel to 'Brats' though... I would have loved to have seen young Stan and Ollie at school, with James Finlayson as their enemy, the school swot.

I watched this film right in the middle of a 27 hour movie marathon. Despite having such an interesting premise, it could barely hold our attention

This was always wedged between "The Karate Kid", "Midnight Madness" or "Just One of the Guys" on HBO back in the day. Its also cool to see one of these old school movies where little people play an important role and they arent costumed as Ewoks or trolls or some fantasy creature.

I actually watched this movie when I was young. I think it was on The Movie Channel. Must have been 13 or so early 80's

I eagerly watched the pilot episode when it aired, then promptly forgot the show existed. One thing that stuck with me was that Jennifer Aniston was a star waiting to happen.

I remember watching this when it came out. In fact, about 3 months before this video was released I purchased this to watch on stream on Amazon. LOL

you know if hollywood was half decent, and not full of shit, this would actually make for a good movie to be remade, as the backstory behind the wizzard of oz would make for one hell of a good movie, and if your going to make fun of something why not the old story about the wicked witch of the west, and the woman who played her, who was actually a school teacher, and used to troll her classes by actually showing up AS her on halloween lol

I thought it was hilarious as a kid, and still love it. You can see the dedication and love for the original series in every frame of this film. Except Rosie O'Donnell... That's the only thing they messed up on. She did okay though, she had the laugh down at least.

I love how you wish it was just a normal movie about the making of the WoO. Like, the director should have just changed the whole movie for what you wanted. It's a slapstick comedy. That's all it is. Just say you didn't like it. Why wish it was a completely different movie? Go make your own.

I loved this movie. It's so silly you can't take any of it seriously. So why take certain attitudes in it seriously?

If you have issue with the darkness of the film fine, but dont understand why anyone thinks this isnt a brilliant Indy film? Has everything. People complain yet the 3rd one is way way cheesier. This is way better than LAst Crusade

So I grew up watching this movie. We had a vhs of it and I remember that as a little kid loving it. Then as an adult I bought the DVD because of my fondness of the movie as a child. Boy did I miss a lot of the issues when I was little. I wasn’t able to watch it anymore after seeing how badly it aged. Among other things I recall The subplot of the duke and duchess many, many dogs because they keep dying was so hard to watch. But I am not sure what the appeal was as a kid, but it had a lasting impression 😂. No one else I know has ever heard of this flick, so thank you for showcasing it so I can prove it exists. 😂

we watched this back on CBS late night during the 80's and my dad loved the movie but I vaguely remember it. During the 90's, it was for rent on vhs at my local video store but I sure as heck didn't enjoy it that time.
