I am a University Professor and I grew up in a barrio and can't change how I look, walk or talk. Sure there are moments of discrimination, and unjust criminalization, but as Mexicans we must always stand tall and continue to open doors for our gente and defy stereotypes.

Hey Bro, Yo Soy de Bassett Grande, Los Noches Tecolotes (Nite Owls) seen you reffing boxing matches. I was in era Danny Psycho, Sammy Pachecha, Juan (john Di Bein), Sluggo, Bobby Sapata, Valdez Brothers, Chucky, Estrada, Trini, Bosco, Henry Lamas,I was there when Eddie Gueurra and Chucky wrecked. But ened up in the system Y.A, the joint1972, SQ 1974/75/76, Folsom 1974, etc. in the 70's, I seen you in championship bouts, and thought wow, a homie. I was raised on 3 rd ave. between Procter, and Valley Blvd. I got paroled back in 1986, on my Indian Reservation, been out every since. My kids still live in Basset Grande, right across from keenan by the Valdez, old house.

Wow, I was in Tehachipi in the 70's on a parole violation. I fell in Sacramento, on Fed, state charges in in 70's so went to Vacaville guidance center, but caught a beef ended up in W wing, until back to Quentin to Adjustment Center, and seen Sluggo, and Tomas in the upper yard when the guards where taking me to the SHU. Hey I remember Bassaett Grande was the Black Sheep of the San Gabriel Valley, but had bros from many other varrios from Y.A, and Juvi, so had back up. Until Bunky de Sangra told the others we together, dudes from Puente, Monte, Bolen, Irwa became my brothers, we rolled together in the joint.

Good Interview Vince, Ray is a fine example of how you can be from the hood, and decide, i want more in life, Congratulations Ray and Vince both of you deserve to be recognized not only for your contribution to a solid life, but also an example for those wondering minds of our youth and or Homies that wonder, is there a way to move forward in life. Some wonder, and some do it.

First thing first… deep respect for Popeye Ray great interview Vince. Great advice for all young Chicanitos. The lifestyle of Latinos growing up, parents, family members introduceing to get high, be tough, buy nice car before college. The cycle never changes. Education is the key, aren’t we tired of being portrayed as convicts, gardeners, maids yes that’s right those NaZis and white collar educated baldy old men running our country have us labeled and feed us the crime and drugs in our very own barrios. That’s why prison are full of Mexicanos CHANGE

But in the ring, he looks normal like Benji Esteves, or others, but perhaps a little more time. I used to play rancheras in the hood on guitar, Danny Psycho had a piano in his house, and taught me how to play Night Owl on the piano, he did it good. And I stepped up and ended up playing in my Rock Band around the world, after I left the joint, I developed, a all around musician, performing on saxaphone, piano, etc, writing my own songs., but never became a millionaire rock star, I am happy with my experiences, and Ray will be a notable ref. I watched his fights, he reffed.
