Popeye is amazing. I've read through his entire early run, and couldn't put it down. I then tried to explain the origins of the character to friends who only knew the later, family-friendly versions, and they couldn't understand it - the depression-era viewpoint, the art style, the sly digs and really nutty stuff thrown in there. People like to trash the Robin Williams film from 1980, but if you watch carefully, they got a lot of clever details spot on.

I'm smelling a Popeye post-apocalyptic reboot! Popeye, suddenly forced to live in a world where food is scarce and spinach is a valuable commodity - hoarded by his arch-enemy, Bluto!

I randomly picked up The first few fantagraphics Popeye volumes a few years ago and was blown away by how great they are. Wish they would get a digital release so I don't have to lug out those giant hardbacks tho

1930's Popeye was more fun than the rest. Among other things, he drank and had a weakness for dice. Fantagraphics books did a collection of all of the strips until Segar's death. They are long out of print, but can still be found on e-bay.

I borrowed several compilations of the early Popeye comics from the public library. I also read some of the early Popeye comics, including his first appearance, on Hoopla, which is a book-reading app that you can get with your library membership. The early Popeye comics are fun to read. One of my favorite characters is Castor Oyl, who, unfortunately, stopped being a regular character sometime in the early thirties.

Popeye was a manly man! The earliest superhero who wasn't afraid to eat his vegetables and teach any palookas what's coming to him! His animated shorts and charm never fail to amuse and amaze me!

You forgot to mention an important fact about Popeye in the original comics--he didn't eat spinach to gain his strength. That lore came from the cartoons
@ComicBookHistorians6 жыл бұрын
That topic doesn’t quite fit in this episode but that is true. He was strong and nigh invulnerable with remarkable healing without the spinach. Although later on in Segar’s series, Spinach did help him heal even faster:

Actually Popeye started to eat spinaches from 1933 or so; before, the whistle hen Bernice gave him strength and luck
