I never understood the hate for the live action movie. What more could you want? The actors WERE the characters. To a one they were the absolute embodiment of the characters. Williams pulls off the performance of a lifetime. The visual design is jaw dropping, somehow making it actually LOOK like the cartoon. Yeah, the story is a little weak, but I mean, the cartoons were about "sailor man eats spinach, sailor man beats up bully", so any story at all is a step beyond. Maybe the critics could just look at Popeye's personal motto. I yam what I yam. This looks like it would have been cool, though. Maybe not as a giant budget theatrical release, but certainly for something like Netflix. I'd have watched it for sure.

I don’t think you can write Popeye off as a relic of the past. I was born in the ‘90s. There was ZERO new and shiny Popeye stuff for me to watch in a modern style. And yet, Popeye was always my favorite cartoon as a kid watching him on Boomerang. If I remember correctly, that was the Famous Studios ones that I was watching - definitely older than the ‘60s Hanna-Barbera style, but they were in color. So, my point being, that if I was a kid who was 60 years removed from the cultural context and still loved those old Popeye shorts, then the same could happen today if you just put the character in front of kids. That 3D proof of concept short would absolutely pass with kids today I think. If you want to see similar projects, you’ve got Scoob! and Tom & Jerry, so that’s what you’re competing with

Classic Cartoon characters like Popeye and Betty Boop deserve so much more than they're getting these days. The fact that both were so close to getting their own animated movies made but failing right before the finish line is so sad. People love these characters, and more kids would too if they were given proper exposure, beyond memes and clips trending on Twitter, through projects made by people like Genndy who respect them and their place in animation history. Maybe one day they'll get their ideal movies finally made, but with how the industry has shifted towards superheroes and cinematic universes, I don't see that anytime soon.

Betty Boop is a strange case. She never went away, but only as chintzy, retro merchandising. She also suffered a lost movie in the 80's or 90's, but she did have an obscurish 80's TV special. I believe the most recent project was a comic book series from Dynamite from a few years back. Popeye's problem is similar, but he's just had more of a go with more frequent, more accessible reruns. I don't recall seeing any Betty Boop programming blocks, and her cartoons seemed to fade with the 30's, unlike Popeye's big 50's/60's revival short for television. And he would get like 2 more cartoon series after that. We just don't see much of him lately because there aren't too many places to find his shorts outside of KZbin.

for anybody who doesn't know, "chip butty" is a british slang term for a sandwich consisting of two slices of buttered (hence the "butty" part) bread, and chips (fries/maybe steak fries for USians) in the middle. chip butties are usually looked down upon because they're a quick, cheap and usually greasy food (since in my experience chip butties are usually made with takeaway (takeout in US english) chips, which are usually very greasy) and are associated with the lower class (in a negative way, because rampant english classism y'know). btw, sandwiches in britain (or at least england) are usually made by buttering the bread first (unless it's made with something spreadable like jam (jelly in US english), or if it's store-bought). just thought it was interesting that such a channel name was connected to the animatic.

This all just makes me think...how many animated movies, existing only in animatic form, are there out there that have just never been released to the public? APML could mean Animatic Popeye Movie Leak
@jackmack41812 жыл бұрын
The only thing I kind of disliked in the movie was Bluto, while yes he is a greedy man, who loves to brag and boast but he also is the only person who could match popeye before he can eat his spinach. If I could change him I would have it so Olive tells the truth of Bluto followed up by popeye punching him in the face so har she gains his signature scowl then during the fight against the old sea Hag, a stray magic bolt hits Bluto changing him from a buff playboy to his iconic form.

Easily this movie has the best ending, punching Bluto in the face!

Your argument that Popeye has low brand recognition... Here's a few movies whose characters had literally ZERO brand recognition before being a movie... Shrek, Frozen, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, Toy Story, Up, Despicable Me... etc.

Popeye is not forgotten and my grandchildren know who Popeye is because I introduce them to the cartoons of Popeye years ago and my seven year old even knows who Betty Boop is lol

I watched the Whole Popeye animatic, and coming from a lifelong Popeye fan;...I didn't like it. It had its good elements, but it felt too much like Hotel transylvania. It follows that basic Sony formula too much. I feel like this movie really wouldn't have been worth it. The only thing i really liked was Tom Kenny's voice of Popeye, but had this movie happened, they wouldve replaced him and the entire cast with celebrities, and it would lose what made the film tolerable.

Ya know it seems like everyone who has seen this leak says its good. You would think they would bring it back to life. I mean its pretty much done and you know people like it so why not.

This movie would've needed a bit of work to bring up to snuff. Characterization is all wrong in many cases and things like the talking animals would have to be removed to create a genuine "Popeye" vibe. And yet again Popeye is searching for his long-lost dad. Why does this have to be the plot of every Popeye movie?

Given how old the animatic is, I have to wonder if further versions were improved, or if the movie started falling apart. The live-action Super Mario Bros. movie had various rewrites that left it in its current state. Was this movie suffering similar issues?

Genndy never worked on Batman: The Animated Series. Where’d you get that from? Sheesh. “Journalism” is dead. Also the animatic is just the start of the process. Most final movies vary greatly from the animatic.
