Can you imagine if Popeye stole Mario's thunder? Today's retro community would be raving about Popeye Kart, Popeye Paint, Popeye 64, etc. Instead of "Mario Maker" we'd have "Popeye Producer." There'd be no Donkey Kong Country... only Bluto's Boondocks. The world would be a scary, spinach-laden place.

Nintendo would never stuck with Popeye for as long as they have with Mario. Mario is Nintendo's own IP. Popeye is someone else's IP. Someone else who would have been able to take Popeye away from Nintendo and licence him to someone else, like Ocean, US Gold, Electronic Arts (back when it was Electronic Arts) Broderbund or Ubisoft.

Of course he would had to rescue Olive Oyl to complete the game.

That Popeye board game reminds me of that Flintstones game on the (Genesis?) that was kind of the same thing. Each player (Fred or Barney) would roll their dice, land on a square, and depending on the type of square you would get a little mini-game, platform level, or some sort of casino-like event. You also got a piece or something for every level you completed - kind of like Trivia Pursuit wedges.

I have a Popeye: Ijiwaru Majo Sea Hag no Maki cartridge, and the videos I posted of the first island were the first footage of this game posted to KZbin. I personally like the game a lot, board game aspect and all. The only thing I don't like is that the board game theme plays all the time when you play 2 player mode. The one player version is terrific, the 2 player mode not so much, between the split screen and the repetitive music that just doesn't work anywhere outside the board screen. It's a real shame this game never made it outside Japan. It was supposed to, as I saw screenshots of this game in a 1993 issue of EGM, with Popeye using only his arm with a spinach meter similar to Popeye 2 for Game Boy. Something got changed at some point obviously, but the game seems to have been completed for the U.S. market, as the December 1994 issue of GamePro lists the game as "available now". I'm willing to bet, based on that, that there is a prototype somewhere out there. It's a shame Technos went belly up before the game could get released, especially since it seems to have been finished.
