Massive monocultures, poor soil maintenance, constant pruning, high environmental pressures for diseases. If you look through that through the lens of natural selection it kinda looks like a perfect environment for an unstoppable poplar disease to develop.

Yep. There is no reason blocks of 3-5+ species couldn’t be grown to increase diversity. After a few years, the understory can be grazed with sheep to reduce tillage, herbicides, and mowing plus add an additional yield from the land.

Haters gonna hate. This is no more or less a monoculture than corn, rice, etc. The alternative to growing the trees in plantation is cutting more area of natural forest or going without homes, furniture, etc. Take your pick.

Tooo much of a good thing always comes back to bite you. Pruning and sap from the woods always attracts insects then comes insecticides and you can figure where that leads.
