Listen to her talk about her one album, as if that was supposed to pay for the rest of their lives. Dude, make another album, and you'll make another $300k+ after all is said and done! Not that complicated! Listen to her whine about how they only got 300k for being developed by a team of people and having their music video created around them. They had absolutely no creative input on Waterfalls video. That was all created using technology that they had no idea about because it was new. That's why they didn't make all the money, they used their larynxs and nothing else. The executives commissioned the songs to be written, built and owned and maintained the recording studios which is extremely expensive, they did all the marketing and filming and directing and producing.

The biggest problem here is that TLC only received 56 cents per album sold. If their album sold for $10 minimum that means $9.44 was being made on each album that was being distributed to other people NOT in TLC. $9.44 x 10 million albums sold is 94,400,000 (almost 100 million dollars). Out of that nearly 100 million dollars the record company made off of these girls, they couldn't afford to pay for the production of the album? They had to scrape 3 million dollars out of the measly 5 mill that was already being shared amongst the 3 members of the group. Maybe that was legal but was it morally right? I don't think so
@aarossell11 жыл бұрын
hence the biggest problem(s) with the music industry are the industry itself. Everything about the industrialized music scene is horrible. Profit from the artists and then toss them out like a candy bar wrapper.
@omgimover407510 жыл бұрын
Well actually CDs in the 90s cost $15 minimum, so the record company made more than $100 million off that album. I know cause I was about 15 years when CrazySexyCool came out & that's how much I paid for it. It wasn't until the 2000s when albums sold for $10 or less
@tswagg50410 жыл бұрын
wanna3636 The CDs in the 90s were 15 dollars, but you have to account for the markup that the record stores imposed. It's possible that the label sold the albums to a distributor for the 9.44 price, who sold it to a record store, that in turn sold it to you for 15.99 and up.
@JenniferBrigitteOpticalVortex7 жыл бұрын

The most successful musicians and actors hire a good agent to negotiate contracts. An example of smart thinking is when someone like Johnny Depp works on a movie for free, but his contract guarantees that he gets a lot of points from box office, DVD and soundtrack CD sales. One of the "Pirates" movies paid out $45 million to him, instead of the $12.7 they offered him as a paycheck. Yeah, smart money!

A lot of people don't realize the $300,000 was divided among a number of years, TLC's bankruptcy filing revealed they only made about $50,000 in 1993 and 1994. Exactly. A lot of artists who meet untimely ends (Michael Jackson, Heavy D, Biggie, Tupac, etc.) are artists who wised up, saw the writing on the wall and started taking control of their direction, production and messages. I can't help but notice that. The big names who pose a legitimate threat to the business and/or political order in the industry/Hollywood end up either dead or a victim of some scandal to try to publicly discredit them/tarnish their image. Or both.....
@spurofthemomenthing11 жыл бұрын
It's so funny how people are bashing TLC for signing that record deal when if they were in that situation they'd want people to try and relate to them. I find it amazing how many people become producers, record labels etc. Yes, some things are common sense but, as new artists they thought the label had their best interest at heart (obviously). 56¢ for each album sold. Thats clue number 1 that Pebbles and her team was stealing from their ass. You mean to tell me the artist with an album with 10 songs or more only gets 0.1% PAY FROM IT. Thats is sad how they were ripped off.
@DE-xn7zz9 жыл бұрын
Surely the record company didn't think that was fair. I mean 7 points off a album that sold 10 million. What the hell required an album to get 100 points?! Unbelievable this music industry is
@MissNayNay9 жыл бұрын
DE405 I agree. I can't believe how much they got ripped off. LaFace Records didn't have a good reputation back then. They ripped off a lot of their artists. They should had gotten more than 7 points on the record, and since Left Eye wrote her own rap verses, she should had gotten money for being credited as a co-writer. It's so messed up.
@charliedeen16209 жыл бұрын
+DE405 This can't be pinned on Pebbles. The majority of money doesn't go to the manager but rather the record label and distributors. The 11+ million record sales happened on the second album CrazySexyCool AFTER Reid released TLC from their management deal with Pebbles. Pebbitone was simply the production company that invented the group and signed a production deal with LaFace records (the record label). LaFace Records wasn't an independent label, it was founded through a joint venture with Arista Records (Clive Davis as the head of Arista) which is tied to the distributor BMG. Thus, the majority of the money went to LaFace Records and Arista/BMG, not Pebbitone.
@brandonhall72357 жыл бұрын
Okay, Pebbles spent her own money molding them, if they flopped she would have lost money, not them. LaFace would have lost money, not them. It's business and the head of the company, any company, is going to watch out for themselves first. Unless you are an artist that was independent and you have your own following, you will not get a good record contract. Kandi from Xscape and Dawn from En Vogue always spoke on their initial record deals and how they got something similar to TLC.
@brandonhall72357 жыл бұрын
TheBookWorm1718 many don't have members with expensive medical bills, million dollar videos, and tour cancellations because of sickness. And if you budget and invest your money you can make out well, a lot don't. Because you aren't bankrupt doesn't mean you are rich either. Terry Ellis of En Vogue has sung background for Beyoncé earlier on in Beyoncé's career. Maxine had a thriving furniture and art business. Lelee of SWV was homeless after SWV broke up in early 2000s, Coko had a successful gospel career. Lisa was business minded. When she suggested that three solo album "challenge" under the name TLC, they would have made million. Outkast did it years later and made a killing. They would have satisfied their contract and been in a GREAT position to renegotiate their contract. It's a business and should be treated as one.

TLC's problem was that they were simultaneously signed to a bunch of different entities that collected before they got paid. They had a production deal with Pebble's company Pebbitone (company 1) that had a deal LaFace Records (company 2), which was an offshoot of Arista Records (company 3), which itself was owned and distributed by BMG (company 4.) So that's four companies collecting fees, and profiting off of the group, BEFORE they saw a dime. This is why artists should avoid signing with a record label that's a joint venture of this or that. Don't sign with some producers offshoot label that has a deal with whatever company. You may as well go work at McDonalds. If TLC had been signed to the main Arista label, minus LaFace and Pebbitone, then they would have saw more profits.

To all those who say that $300,000 IS a lot of money, you are right - it is. But please bear in mind that Pebbles was suing them for damages, and as it was their own case the record company were not involved, so the cost came out of their own pockets, and according to the movie they bought the rights to the name TLC from Pebbles after they left her management. Also, remember that they were celebrities, so even if they had wanted to live simple lives they still would have spent loads of money on security - stalkers are dangerous. I'm not sure they had any endorsement deals either, or they wouldn't have been in that situation. They also had families they needed to support, but couldn't because of their situation. Finally, we all know that T-Boz was sickle call anaemic, and her 'crisis' didn't allow them to tour that much.

+Streatham Soprano Left Eye had a Gap commercial that was leaked on here where she is singing out of key so that's why it probably was never released and they did the theme song to the classic NIck show All That so every time the show ran they got paid.

with Toni Braxton its like she was unaware how her record deal worked. The problem was that she got little royalties but the woman was staying in 5 star hotels, had limo drivers etc etc. She was according to contract supposed to pay for all this stuff herself ( partly) plus album recording, promos and videos. She didn´t do it until 4 years into her career after living the sweet life, then came the check and she was in minus.

Being a celebrity can be dangerous, so she would need a house with maximum security. Which that $300,000 would be gone and have no money for other bills. 😍 I love Lisa, I wish her and Aahliyah never left us.

WTF yall talkin about? 300,000 ain't a lot of money when your hard work blood sweat and tears are put out for the world to see and hear but everyone else made more money than you did off of what you did. So compared to Pebbles making 48 million 300,000 ain't shit.
@thefactsaccordingtogabbie1496 жыл бұрын
lealand rayford Exactly, $300,000 ain't alot or enough money for somebody like he who sold millions and work their ass off plus don't forget the sacrifice she had to make do on a daily.

$300,000 is still a lot of money to most people though. Puts you deep into the top 5%. Unfortunately, artists need more because their careers are fairly short.

she's much softer and lady like in real life (on video interviews) than they seemed to portray her on the movie.
