Extortionate rent prices driven by foreign investors hoovering up the properties, together with higher wages for London employees, sadly this cost gets passed onto customers in restaurants and bars especially independents who don't get such good deals from suppliers as they're buying in small scale. This is however top end prices for fish and chips in Central London so probably as expensive as it gets, outskirts of London you'll get this meal for about 8 quid.

Hmm,I may have to try this place. One look at the menu impressed me. Yeah,you can get bad fish and chips,for sure,but this place is clearly tight! Also,one of my London obsessions is curry takeaway places,we don’t have those in my sad neck of the woods. I will search your channel for the best one in London. In 1995,I ate,almost daily at one at Earl’s Court,Palak paneer,and lamb curry with the basmati and naan. I’ve literally had dreams about it. If the vid doesn’t exist,make one,please!!!

Here in the USA, we have a franchised chain of fish and chips shops called "H.Salt Esquire Fish & Chips" that was started by an Englishman in the 1960's. They are decent, not quite as good as what you will get in England but will get the job done. The stainless steel fish & chip frying equipment and counter tops were all made in Newcastle, England ( I looked at the name plates on the equipment). They also have real English malt vinegar to put on your chips.

A chip butty is a beautiful thing. To anybody who comes to the UK if you want good quality fish & chips you're best going to a coastal town where they bring in daily catches of fish. That way you're guaranteed fresh quality fish at a sensible price. You can get good fish & chips in London but you need to search it out and you will find it quite pricey.

My dad served in the US Navy for decades, and when my family lived in Washington DC, dad would travel regularly to London. He would return with fish and chips, and still wrapped in newspapers. Even though the chips and fish were soggy, the best fish and chips. I still think the best fish and chips are from London.

Well you did it again! Those fish and chips looked amazing, there aren't many places here in Dubai where you can get some decent fish and chips. Not too sure how you managed that doorstop chip butty!! That fish looks good. I used to live in the South Lakes and my local chippy in Arnside did great fish but my local chippies (2 of them) in Market Deeping serve dry fish with greasy batter. The fish and chips I had in the US weren't too bad, I sampled them in the Dallas area where I lived for a number of years, but the fillets where too small, about a third to half that of a fish served in the UK. I should add you'd get 2 or 3 small fillets per serving..

I am with you in that cod is the traditional chippy standard. I am a malt vinegar and salt man - that's the only way to truly enjoy the dish, especially on fried calamari (squid - I like the tentacles end because it's crunchier and has more flavor like chicken dark meat). If you ever come to Northern California you MUST come to Santa Cruz and have lunch at our local Seabright Brewery. They have a salmon fish & chips on the menu that during the season (basically the month of April unless closed due to low salmon population that year) the salmon is fresh, caught that morning, and is the fattest pinkest sweetest fish you have ever had. The Monterey Bay is chock full of krill and the salmon gorge on the tiny shrimp on their way back to the rivers of their birth. The dish comes with a soy-garlic sauce, a wasabi-tartar sauce, and another I can't recall right now (wasabi is the green horseradish stuff you get with sushi). It has a salad and the best ciabatta bread you have ever had from one of our magnificent local bakeries. Salmon season is a really big deal around here, much like dungeness crab season (which is winter and you don't want to be more than a hundred meters from shore unless you know exactly what you are doing - it's a very quickly lethal environment).

Hi, Robert ! Thanks for posting a video on Poppie's ! I really enjoyed eating there. I got there via Brick Lane. We were looking for fish and chips in the East End , and I didn't realize we were in "Curry Lane". Finally , the man outside one curry shop pointed us in the right direction, and I'm so glad he did because I really loved that place. The memorabilia decorating the restaurant adds a nice touch to the experience, I think.

What did the late great AA Gill have for his last restaurant meal? You got it. So folks around the world look no further, no-one does it it better than the British, so don't be fooled, come over and try for yourself. This restaurant Poppies looks amazing, a great deal of skill and thought put in, and there are 1000's like this all over Britain. When you know this is the best food you can get (when done proper) the prices are always cheap in comparison to average restaurant prices.

The presentation of these videos is excellent and although the presenter talks while eating he doesn't spray food all over the camera ! He is a neat eater. The videos make you want to go out and order some too ! When I grew up in England we used to get an old Bedford OB bus come around our village with fish and chips and they also offered cockles and mussels in little jars.Chip butties are 'to die for'.

Most dedicated fish & chips shops are pretty good,and hard to get a bad version of the meal. Those that also do burgers, pizza and kebab are usually the worst versions. Basically, long established places dedicated to it are going to be much the same. My local chippy be much cheaper ( not really a criticism of Poppies which has vastly more expensive overheads with business rates/ London wages etc ) and serve a greater portion of both for less money, so no moaning, just a celebration that despite the decline in the number, most towns still have a great British chippy.

When I was a kid in New York fish and chips in an Irish pub were cheaper than burgers. Some time in the nineties the price skyrocketed. I found out years later that the codfish population was depleted due to overfishing off the coast of Nova Scotia. The Canadian government, who controlled the waters, allowed Japan, China, and Russia access to their waters and they depleted the codfish. Price of codfish then soared because cod is the preferred fish of choice in fish and chips. Shame.

Poppies is fine but not exactly the best fish and chips I've ever had, very expensive too. If you're looking at high profile London fish and chip restaurants, I think Rock & Sole Plaice in Seven Dials is much better. But to be honest, none of them are ever better than a good suburban chippie, the local fish bar near where I live in Bournemouth years ago was cheap and brilliant. You can always tell a good one by the line out the door in the evenings.
