I wasn’t interested at first, but i really like Katseye. The girls are really charismatic and talented so its a joy watching them perform. their asian promotion in Korea is doing really well in terms of garnering new fans. Only time will tell if they can hit it BIG big though

Lexie was my fav trainee from dream academy (before the final lineup was announced) and I was so sad that she left, they said in the statement that’s she’d rather be producer than a recording artist, but now since the documentary aired and I found out the real reason why she left I was sad, they all deserve so much better

@junipairo essentially, Lexie really didn't like how they were doing eliminations (based on fan votes where social media played a huge part, plus it being announced by a robot voice and not ppl - to make drama out of the poor girls). Also, I *assume* she was already upset that they repeatedly lied to the girls about it not being a survival show.

the individual member branding is so important, at least in the western market. and honestly it's best if it's kind of obvious from the start. the spice girls were onto something the scary/baby/posh/ginger/sporty branding. i think that's part of why blackpink are so popular in the west too. they have very clear intended individual brandings that show through in their mvs and performance outfits and literally everything else too. like the branding is very reductive but also effective because it makes you as an audience member feel like they're a group of different girls or women who came together to make this group edit: also with katseye specifically i think it was a HUGE mistake to put their "psychiatrist" sessions in the documentary. there's supposed to be confidentiality with a mental health professional. i wouldn't be surprised if those girls thought all their comments about each other were going to be private between them and the psychiatrist. it's normal to get frustrated or pissed at other people, especially in such a high pressure environment, and talking to a mental health professional is literally one of the healthiest things you can do about it.

@@ishathakor I think they're tryna do that sort of thing with KATSEYE rather than melting all the girls together in the same vibe and look. Lara's a limitless key 🗝️ and her colour is green 💚, Manon is a stellar tiara 👑 and her colour is yellow 💛, Yoonchae is a soothing shell 🐚 and her colour is pink 🩷 etc. they also have some sort of vintage doll lore going on which I hope to see more of. Honestly it would be cool to have CGI of their dolls and a transition to the actual girls in an MV one day just to tie in with the lore. They're onto something with the whole vintage witchy yet kinda Bratz doll vibe. Also the dream charms. It's different.

Also, speaking of the slow burn fame you mentioned instead of instant success. The major reason why BTS could blow up in the west is because they grinded and took the time to cultivate a dedicated fandom invested in their success after seeing their underdog story. And it paid off in spades, i mean, BTS’s success transformed their bankrupt agency into one of South Korea’s billion dollar conglomerate. A unicorn.

Yes but it’s also mainly luck. What BTS did isn’t unique at all. All Kpop groups are grinding and putting in focus to their fanbase. They had a unique situation where they were surviving more on an international fanbase before that was sustainable in Kpop. In 2nd gen and early 3rd gen it didn’t matter if you had a lot of western fans you needed to be popular in Korea. Nowadays in 4th Gen. You can survive with being a nobody in Korea but having western fans. BTS had that international fanbase and hung on long enough or were lucky enough to be around when this shifted and you could get recognition fr having a western audience. So this kept them afloat enough until they did get big in Korea so once they had Korea plus their original international audience they were set But mainly it was luck. Other groups who had more international fans either came from companies that couldn’t keep them afloat until this switch to the west happened or had bad companies like BAP or just never gained fame in Korea to help them blow up. BTS is an underdog story but they didn’t do anything else people weren’t already doing. They just got lucky and were in the right time in the right place when the industry was undergoing a shift towards international audiences having more of an influence
@PeteZaroll551
@PeteZaroll551 Ай бұрын
@@yukijames1321 it still makes them a unicorn though😂 because who is ever that lucky to come from a group that was about to disband to becoming the biggest and most successful K-pop act in the world. so you did nothing but prove their point. there was obviously SOMETHING unique about them to be able to maintain that fame as well. Not to mention luck is mainly a huge factor with ALL groups when it comes to success in K-pop. They say this over and over again in the industry. You just sound bothered. The amount of times you repeated "it’s just luck" in that one essay you posted.😂

I think there is such a rise in authenticity that now groups seem to general and to many people to get to know whereas in kpop fans are coming into a new culture and this is apart of it and since images are so tight it’s easier to get to know them and their training makes up for the lost authenticity along with the strict cultural ‘rules’

What pmo was when Mitra said the audience wanted drama which was NOT TRUE at all. I was there since they first introduced dream academy and everyone was hoping it would be friendly survival show without any tension/drama😭 A lot of people were hoping it would be like the A2K survival show (JYPE’s global girl group survival show) where it was focused on the girls helping each other, no drama, and they even had the option/chance to which ALL 11 of them could debut without any eliminations. Speaking of A2K I really want to hear your thoughts on it! It’s also about a global girl group (though all the girls are from America but diverse in ethnicity) that is under a kpop company + western company thats went through kpop training in some way.

I would say Mitra is right, unfortunately. That episode had the highest rating and views. Plus, a lot of pal's main complaint with A2k is that it was too boring and cookie cutter. Hate Mitra or not, katseye gained a LOT of new non kpop fans through the documentary, which I doubt woulda happened if it was just cookie cutter like A2k was.

@@mayuhmetalthis doesn't really make sense.... What is "global" language??? Also Blackswan is a kpop group BECAUSE they make songs with Korean lyrics. KATSEYE sings ENTIRELY in English. as a K-pop fan, imo the best 'starter' survival shows for girl groups have to be Sixteen and Produce 101 (particularly the 1st and 3rd seasons, where they created girl groups out of the contestants). Sixteen is kind of similar to Popstar Academy in which all the girls train under the same label, while Produce 101 had trainees from various labels compete for placement on short-term girl group launched by the TV network. And yes, obviously Popstar Academy is ((friendlier)) than those two shows. Trainee life is way tougher in Korea!

As the last western gg that blew up, the thing about Little Mix’s debut single is that they took their popularity by winning the X-Factor good and released a pop song that every people (specially girls) could relate to and the Little Mix girls has been consistent thru it over the years. Also adds that the girls had a good chemistry with each other having different strengths that made the group strong with their great vocals, great music and amazing standout performances. Even though their career wasn’t always been stable and they also experienced a lot of shits inside the industry, they became strong and took it as their motivation to do better and now these new groups are looking up to them making them one of the standard of being a great girl group.

I dont think they cut Abby just for a shock for their first episode. She has star quality, but wasnt keeping up with the pace of the other girls in terms of improving her dancing etc. she needed a lot more time to hone her skills which they didnt have. Manon also had no training whatsoever but she debuted JS.

That's why the girl's frustrations are valid. I don't get why people didn't see it that way. They just love to paint manon like she was some victim. She was scouted for her looks, she got in easily, and she got privileges that the other girls didn't have. Good for her, but she knows why she's there and she is too complacent. The other girls and the choreographer were just being real. But they were painted as villians. The fact that Sophia and Lara were painted as villains literally shows that stans prefer visuals over hard work and talent. If you watch the documentary with a non biased lens, you'd agree with the other girls. There's a reason why some of the contestants didn't like her. It it wasn't out of jealousy. It's because of unfair treatment. Why would sophia, the girl who places on top would be jealous of that? Why would lara who has star power and quality skills would envy her? They were frustrated. The people who would see it as bullying are the ones who truly never experienced real life to begin with since constructive criticism shouldn't be painted as bullying. Manon stans have a victim mentality, and i think it brings her more harm than good.

As someone who actively voted during the actual survival KZbin clips, because that definitely wasn’t a show, I really hated that there was almost no content as show. I didn’t not understand why the girls were crying during Adelas elimination because we didn’t know about the dynamics and it was such a set up that some girls sang and others only danced to a cover. The singing was way more intriguing and brought one closer to the contestants. Like skills are important but in the end most people voted based on visuals or nationality. Also Marquise was not seen whatsoever during either of the shows. It was also SuS that no one addressed the Samara drama because she would have made it without her scandal. Lexie was my fav and gained even more recognition after the documentary. Slay Also them just putting them in a survival show, because let’s be real after training for a year and thinking being close to your dream, you won’t drop out of the survival show beforehand simply because of hope. The manipulation is crazy. At least it wasn’t 99 girls like in girls planet 999 because that would have been siiiick

I’m watched the documentary. The girls were judge on the 4 criteria dance, sing, visual &star quality. I feel the contestants focused only on 2 aspect (dance /vocals) so when contestant like Manon came that had the other two qualities but lacked in the two that they prioritized, they resented her. The process it self was not explained to Manon properly, who is from a country(Switzerland) that prioritized wellbeing over pushing one’s self to the breaking point (injuries/sickness). I feel after the way the girls were frustrated with Manon & she called a meeting, she understood their perspective as well. I also feel that 20 girls in a room speaking about 1, cannot be good for that 1 girl’s mental health or confidence. They were saying things about Manon appearance which was a judging criteria of the program🤔 Missy silencing Manon when she tried to explain herself did not sit right with the audience; especially when it was shown some of the claims the girls made were not true (note taking/ others missing class etc..) I think the girls were teens in a stressful environment and made mistakes. I’m pleased that they all seem close now. Respectfully, I think in your reaction, the grace you offered others is not extended to Manon. The Mental health of all the girls is important.

The og reality was all about vocals and dancing, at least it was sold like that at the beginning. It stood out from other kpop competitions because the only thing we had to guide our votes was the performances and little introductions with their nationalities at the forefront. Not drama, non storylines and such. But it was short lived. Also, I recall during the "Buttons" mission, the issue of Manon not going to practice was brought up for the first time, but they never explained that it was because she was sick. And in the behind the scenes, Celeste said that they were constantly sick and injured from practice. At the end of the day it's a mix of stress, misunderstandings and the team behind the reality handling everything poorly on purpose.

I love how K-pop ripping everything from Western Band (training to genres, especially Black and Japanese culture ) and 20 years later sharing it with the west/world like... what do you mean by K-pop training? The same Training Destiny Child and NSYNC went to before K-Pop was even a thing ? The same K-pop had a lawsuit because they kept copying black artists? The same K-pop that was invented by a guy who studied motown in the United States gave little to no credit to black people and kept being r@cist and culturally appropriate them ? The same K-pop that steals from Western songs that are known in Korea to make a living? Anyway...

@naye6359 XG litteraly trained in Japan... the only thing they did with Korea was speaking the language... if you look at EXPG groups or Avex Groups, you can see how talented they are and trained better than Korean artists... J-POP paved the way for K-Pop, and Koreans can't accept it, so once K-pop became globally , they took this opportunity to take foreign idols that never trained in this kind of system to make them appear weak. Hence why they decided to take AKB48 in Produce 48 and not Japanese trainee who were trained under those big labels.

It's really interesting because the most popular survival shows like Produce 101 combined the documentary style with the survival show so people become invested in the training processes whilst voting. That has its own set off problems, such as "evil editing" but I can't help but wonder if Dream Academy might have benefitted from the same style. I'm a kpop fan and heard about Dream Academy when it aired but didn't follow it. It was the documentary that made me love the girls enough to follow Katseye.

I don't think Manon was painted as a villain lol, if anything that case would be for Adela, Sophia and Lara, mostly. However, none of those girls were villains, their frustration was valid but at the same time Manon didn't have directly a say on people's voting, she was just liked and that's why producers kept her in the program, wich obviously was very biased since they had rules. She was the main character in both, Dream Academy and Popstar Academy. At the end, they all talked about it and it was clear they worked things out, you can even see a clip where Lara and Manon are holding hands together before performing and way before the final results, so that says a lot. P.D: Sadly it seems Adela and Naisha are still bitter about Manon, however Adela follows her on IG.

35:53 That plan is so dumb. I didn't watch the documentary, but I saw the reality at the time and the reason some people dislike her came down to she being focused on more instead of the non american trainees. Even I and others thought she was the one hybe wanted so bad to debut And I wasn't wrong apparently. They obviously had the final lineup planned out (which is fair) and panicked when they realized people were voting for non american contestants, even though that's how they had sold the reality show in the first place. I admit it's funny to see Bang PD frustrated that in his competition based on the Olympics the viewers were voting according to his own vision of it as a competition based on the Olympics.
