Definitely not me. I have come to hate that authors feel the need to write Spin-off series ALL OF THE FREAKING time. Never thought that Maggie Stiefvater would join that bangwagon, but here we are... Also a trilogy... I barely felt like the Raven Boys series had enough plot for four books. Don't get me wrong, I do love these books, because of the great atmosphere and the even greater characters, but they do have REALLY slow parts in there. Oh and in general: Orson Scott Card really does seem to be a little homophobic. I also would never read something by Pittacus Lore/James Frey.

+sarah thomassen He's very vocal about his homophobia. He has encouraged violence against the LGBT community and donates money to organizations that are anti-gay. I was very disappointed when I found out and threw my copy away in the recycling bin. It's sucks since I really liked the first book but I just don't want my money to be used to support organizations that try to strip someone else's rights away and much less encourage violence to said individuals.
@livjordan72438 жыл бұрын
He's very open about his aversion to the LGBT+ community. Although I think its fine to have your own opinion, I don't think openly endorsing violence against ANY group of people is okay. He has also stated several times that he thinks men are superior to women, and that women were made purely for the sexual and entertainment benefit of men. My chain of thinking is why in the heck should I read a book written by someone who don't value my existence?
@sleepybaekhyun58268 жыл бұрын
+HahmChinBaby really? He sucks!😂
@devildriverrule1118 жыл бұрын
(fuck... this is a long post, sorry) Orson Scott Card is a weird one, his political views are mostly very liberal and that is shown in his books, but his views on homosexuality are about as conservative as you can get, I would say it has a lot to do with him being a member of the church of latter day saints. To be honest though, I would consider his view similar to many of the authors of the great classics, for instance HP Lovecraft was staunchly homophobic and xenophobic, but I never let it cloud my views of his works as his xenophobic tendencies led to him writing better horror stories, the fear he felt was presented in his stories as a dark and twisted mythos that everyone can relate to in some way. There are also works like Tales of the Arabian Nights, which contain a lot of outdated and oppressive views (it is thousands of years old after all), but there is also a moral fibre in the stories that makes them worth reading. For instance Scheherazade is the embodiment of a strong well educated female in a book full of females being oppressed and treated like dirt. I find if you look at it from more of a historical and educated view, if you understand the times or the religious belief of the author, you can overlook the social flaws or at least understand its intent. For instance I read The Education of Little Tree knowing the man who wrote it was actually a member of the KKK, I did this to see if his views were in any way interwoven into the story and what I found was that instead of a book having racist views, it more just overlooked the racism shown to the native americans, but the moral story of respecting nature and learning from your elders was an admirable one. I find reading books that directly challenge my views always helps either open my mind to understand peoples motives a little better or it helps me reinforce my own views. I mean look at it like this, I didn't read Mein Kampf because I love the author, I read it because I wanted to understand what a man like that thinks.

Interesting comment, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts! I actually agree with a lot of this, and my perspective is far more complex than the brief mention in this video (which was intentional, as I didn't particularly feel like delving into it, but your comment has inspired me to discuss, so here I am.) I completely agree that experiencing art with a different perspective is important and can be educational and enlightening. Potentially being exposed to ideas I may disagree with is actually a very very small part of why I'm conflicted on reading OSC. I'm sure that even if I found aspects of the material to be problematic, I could still find some value in the work. My conflict stems more with supporting him. First, there's the monetary level, which could be avoided by pirating the book (though I'm very against that practice) or borrowing the book from a library or a friend. I could even possibly request the book from the publisher and get it for free at their cost. However, even if I personally am not supporting OSC with my money, if I read the book, I will want to discuss it here on my channel, and that could potentially influence others to support OSC with their money. And I suppose I could read it and just not tell people I did or talk about it, but that's not a very appealing idea to me. And it's not that I'm especially passionate about not supporting OSC--I'm not going to boycott his work, or discourage others from reading his work, or downplay the value and entertainment his work has. I'm not even going to say that I would NEVER read his stuff--I might someday! I've heard enough about his work from authors and readers whose opinions I trust to believe that he's an excellent storyteller. It's just that I personally don't feel good about supporting him, and while it is possible to go about reading his books without supporting him, it feels unnecessarily complicated when there are SO MANY other books I want to read and authors I want to support that don't raise this conflict for me. I'm sure I could learn things reading OSC, his books could enrich my life--but I don't feel that's exclusive to OSC's books. There are tons of other books I could learn from that could enrich my life, possibly even more so as I'm not that big on sci-fi. Ender's Game was on my radar long before I knew anything about the author, but I didn't pick it up then because it just didn't really sound like my thing. Anyways, again, I appreciate you leaving that comment! It gave me an excuse/forced me to delve a little deeper into my reasoning. The whole "art vs artist" debate and the "artist as a public figure" topic are really complex and interesting and I could probably do a whole video about this (hell this comment is long enough that it could practically be the script). I'll add it to my list of discussion videos and revisit it sometime in the future!

If you want to buy it, I'd suggest keeping an eye out for it at second-hand book stores, or on ThriftBooks, where the authors don't get any of the money from the sale (and sometimes there are new copies), and you can still own the book. I did that with the Golden Compass series, because Phillip Pullman is one of the atheists to give us all a terrible name, despite writing amazing books.
@sorryicantthinkofacoolname72098 жыл бұрын
+Asterismos what has Philip Pullman done? I mean I know that the his dark materials series has some aspects that would be a bit iffy to religious readers, is that what you're talking about or is there something more than that?
@asterismos54518 жыл бұрын
OK, it's not anywhere near as bad as Orson Scott Card, but basically he wrote the series as a middle grade series so that younger people would read it and convert to atheism, and the series attacks the church pretty explicitly, though this quote justifies it somewhat “In my view, belief in God seems to be a very good excuse, on the part of those who claim to believe, for doing many wicked things that they wouldn’t feel justified in doing without such a belief," as he isn't challenging the religion. So I guess while he's trying to convert children, he doesn't do it particularly well, as it just makes you think of the issues with followers of a religion rather than the faults of the religion itself (which in the books is portrayed in a good light).

I don't remember if I already commented this or not...But don't be scared of Way of Kings! It's large, but it goes super quickly, and is not hard to read at all. You should be scared of GoT, as it's fairly dense, but you should also read it, as the book series is infinitely better than the show. :) I have heard people say that Outlander, the book, kind of reinforces rape culture in an offensive way, and they took all that stuff out in the tv show. So that's something that you might want to expect.

I'm currently on the third ASOIAF book, and let me just say I flew through the first two. The last two selection books are so quick and easy to read all you have to do is pick them up one weekend and just read them. They don't match up with the first three but they are definitely worth reading! I haven't even finished Percy Jackson yet so... yeah... your not that behind compared to me. I had to read Ender's Game for school once and literally skipped pages.... I did not enjoy it at all. Not sure why. I haven't started so many popular fantasy series: Falling Kingdoms, all Sarah J Maas, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and Shadow and Bone. I still have The Last Star to read as well. Great video. Hopefully you'll read some books and finish a few series soon!

My heart jumped when I saw Gone. I finished it two days ago (at least season 1 of it). I absolutely loved it!

I actually really enjoyed Ender's Game. I read it knowing nothing about the author. My opinion of the book didn't change after I found out about the controversy surrounding orson scott card. It's very good!

I haven't read any of these, except Trials of Apollo, Magnus Chase and Gone. Other popular books I haven't read is Me Before You (I'm gonna read it now though), The Maze Runner, Divergent (well, I've read the first book, then I just couldn't read the second. I don't know why, but I can't seem to pick it up), Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (I'll read it as soon as I get it) and I haven't finished the The Mortal Instruments series (I have the last book left) and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (I have the last two books left) Wow, this was a long comment... Oh whatever

I have read the first three books of the Selection 'trilogy' as well! I have the Heiress but like you, I do not plan on reading that and book #5. I really enjoyed and was satisfied with how how it ended

No worries on Game of Thrones- they're all too long anyway, lol. I'm also behind on The Selection series too. I've only read the first book and I own the 2nd and 3rd (and the short story collection), but I really do want to get around to them at some point. All the other ones I never really plan on getting around to because none of them interest me that much. I'm also very bad about finishing series- it took me ages to read Allegiant, Champion, and Everneath, lol.

I feel you, Kat. How many popular books haven't I read? Well, let's see... Heroes of Olympus, Lunar Chronicles, Grisha Trilogy, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, The Raven Cycle, Throne of Glass, etc., etc., etc. SOMEONE, LOCK ME UP IN A ROOM WITH ONLY COFFEE AND THIS STACK OF BOOKS UNTIL I HAVE READ AND LOVED ALL OF THEM!

I did the same thing you did with the Selection series with Mortal Instruments for the longest time. I know it wasn't a set of new characters, but the story felt complete at 3 books and I for sure wasn't going to open that drama back up until all of the new ones were released.

Kat, the Gone series is amazing!!! Definitely check them out when you get the chance. The Raven King was an amazing finale. And there's going to be a trilogy based off of Ronan. The Last Star has a lot of mixed reviews. You might like it though. I didn't.

I just recently attended 5 book fairs, so I understand the difficultly in getting into reading books. I have so many to choose, it has become a reading slump. Hopefully the slumps will be over. Happy reading :)

I personally LOVE The Casual Vacancy. I think it shows that JK Rowling is a really fantastic storyteller, even outside of the HP world. Also The Way of Kings was so boring that I never finished it which really surprised me because I've pretty much loved every other Sanderson novel I've read, and that one is apparently his masterpiece....? I didn't get it sadly.

I haven't read Library of Souls too. I'm currently reading City of Lost Souls and I need to finish The Mortal Instruments so that I can finally read Lady Midnight! Also I finished the sixth Harry Potter book two weeks ago and I need to finish this series. HP and The Cursed Child is already waiting patiently on my shelf. Otherwise I haven't read the Percy Jackson, Game of Thrones and The Raven Boys series, which I'd like to read too. So many books to read! :D

I just started reading ASOIAF for Practical Folks' bookclub (here on YT) and I LOVE IT. The book is really big but omg it's so easy and interesting to get through. Martin doesn't waste time. He's able to get everything across clearly and concisely and it's all important. Definitely worth the read.

First I just want to say that your bookshelves are gorgeous. All series, in matching hardback, all the same height, and I'm drooling. Also sorry that this is fairly long.I thought I was doing okay with popular books because I'd kept up with Divergent, Hunger Games, and the Mortal Instruments (haven't read Lady Midnight yet though). Then I started watching booktubes. There are so many books that I didn't even know existed that are absolute staples in the booktube world. I probably won't be reading them any time soon either, because I'm broke (but I have put A Throne of Glass into my Amazon wishlist, so baby steps). I have read ASOIAF (come on, Winds of Winter) and the Gone series though. Plus some of the books that people are raving over are pretty strongly romance and while I can put up with that if there's enough of a story beyond it, it does make me hesitate because romance is my least favourite genre. While it's nice if people get together at the end I don't want to read a whole book about it.

the ones I've read are: A game of thrones (I've read the first three and a half. Still agot is my favorite so far), Outlander (well I'm currently reading it), the hidden oracle & the sword of summer (although I liked the apollo one more but both were really entertaining), library of souls, the ones I want to read: the casual vacancy (the cursed child mention was funny although I really loved that one), I haven't read the selection books but I do want to, falling kingdoms (IT WILL HAPPEN THIS YEAR), the raven king cause I need to read all the other books first but thos year that also will happen & I want to read red rising. i was quite surprised of how many I've already read and I only have no interests in two books

I can't believe that I have read books that you haven't! You will LOVE Outlander, the series it is incredible. I've only read the first book of the Game of Thrones series. But it has really stayed with me, & I read it about two years ago! The Casual Vacancy is really good. What are you waiting for? I read it recently, I think the only reason it's got mixed reviews is because people are going straight into it having finished Harry Potter and it is completely different. In every way.

I LOVE the Selection series! But I don't recommend the last two to people I just tell them to read the first three and then they can read the last two if they want because honestly they are not as good as the first three

If you're stuck reading The Way of Kings, try the Graphic Audio version. They do full cast audiobooks with music and sound effects. Hell, their tagline is "A movie in your mind". It's amazing, and finally got me to finish the book after trying twice within a year. Admittedly, they split the book in 5 parts, and you have to pay for each part, but it's SOOO GOOD. They might be in your local library.

I know you said your TBR pile is so large, but if I could add 4 books that would blow your mind? The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini includes: Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance and is just a fantastic series that has been my favorite since I first read the first one in 2007! x)
