this music is my "go to" to wind down from the week on a Friday evening. Much appreciated! I wonder if my grandparents listened to those broadcasts (in 1939 my mother would have been 8 y/o and likely well in bed)

Bob, nice to find you venturing into this chronological territory and -- wow! -- I finally get to hear Bobby Byrne's band! I've heard most of his great work with Jimmy Dorsey's orch., but I'd never heard him on his own -- only the story about him suing to get his vocalist, Dorothy Claire, back from the Miller orch. A child prodigy, Bobby had been brought into the Dorsey Brothers' orch. at sixteen(!), to take Tommy's chair, when the hot-headed younger Dorsey refused to play with the band. When Tommy was finally able to get out of his contract and stomped off on his own, young Mr. Byrne became one of the stars of the Jimmy Dorsey orch. The kid's beautiful, clear upper-register on "Speaking Of Heaven," of course, bears some resemblance to TD's sound -- as well as Will Bradley's, I think. Besides this treat, my other favorites have to be Lennie Hayton's take on the wonderful "As Long As I Live" and Casa Loma's grooving "Sunrise Serenade."

I was hoping you would enjoy this selection Elizabeth and thank you so much for the background on Bobby B. I wasn't familiar with his background / history and I am sure others will find this helpful too. I am working on doing a chronological series but not in order.

Great selection of tunes from ‘39...although not often heard today, “You Don’t Know How Much You Can Suffer” is a fine tune with a different blue sound, with a wistful, yet swinging style...one barely needs to read between the lines of the melody’s lyrics, however, to realize the suffering abroad at that time was being capsulized in a pop American tune, one notable hit of which was recorded by fellow North Carolinian, Kay Kyser...certainly a good way to start this set! Thanks once more PAX41.

Glad you enjoyed the selection Spencer. You Don't Know How Much You Can Suffer is a favorite song of mine and I like the Abe Lyman version the best.

Alas, my favorite (the tuba) gave way to the trumpet and associated horn instruments in this time frame. I appreciate this era, but utterly love the previous 20 years. All in all, you give us the entire menu to select from, Bob. Thank you.

Yes, kind of like the change in music between the 1950s and 1960s.

That same song is also on the Pax41 Music Time Machine channel but by a different band. It's by Carroll Gibbons and the Savoy Hotel Orpheans. The Gibbons version is by far the best version of this song I have heard. Glad you liked it Susan.
