this is such a trip. I think I have a fascination with watching footage from the past. I wonder where all those people on campus ended up...I also like seeing how fashion has changed and how when the next few generations looks back on us right now (2014), they will think the exact same!

I was 9 years old. My sister was a freshman at UCLA, and my dad was a vice chancellor. Any of us could very well be in the background of this video somewhere, lol. I really do love the feel of that campus. It's just timeless.

Truly a 5 star video for numerous reasons. Historical and architectural significance, not to mention that 1987 was a pivotal year for me (which has nothing to do with your vid, of course). And, everything sandwiched between great glimpses and wonderful audio of those old GM fishbowls!

sweet. Walking from the coffeehouse, that room to the right was the where the ASUCLA job board was/is, and where I found my dream-job in 1986, fixing video games. The shot of the bowling alley was appreciated -- didn't spend all that much time there, but maybe 500 hours or so. Worked 6,000 hours on A-Level over 5+ years. Too bad you didn't get the Coop -- ASUCLA really destroyed that place. Or the arcade, would have been a trip seeing it as it was during its glory days.

The Bruin Bowl was right where the stairs and big hole to B-Level is now on A-Level. It extended down to the Cooperage. Where Jamba Juice and Taco Bell are now there was a game room, with ~80 video games, ~10 pinball games, and 6 pool tables. I know because I worked every Fri+Sat+Sun night there for 4+ years, LOL

I'm really pleased you found my old footage fun. Even then, some things were already gone, like the ticket office in Kerckhoff that let us see all the shows at the Huntington Hartford & the Music Center in exchange for ushering.

the bowling alley was on A-Level, where you were filming is where the hole & stairs to the B-Level is now. they've added tons of new space to A-Level, there used to be an outside balcony-type area that's all new interior space now. Plus I think the old stairs from Bruin Plaza to A-Level are gone now, too. There was a very large arcade on the other side of the bowling alley, on the way to the Coop. That's now a Jamba Juice, mostly.

You're welcome. And thanks for sharing it. One of these days (if I ever get my income tax return done), I want to upload the video I shot the next year. Many of the same scenes (and some others), but in higher quality (from an S-VHS instead of 8mm video original).

In 1987, nearby Kerckhoff already had a restaurant installed where the ticket office used to be in my day (late 1960's, when I used to watch out of its windows to see kids burning their draft cards in Meyerhoff Park). Please share the link with lots of Bruins. Thanks.

Though I video'd it at the time, I'm straining to remember it now. I tend to think the bowling alley (and a few console video games) were on the middle floor, below the auditorium & above the student store (which, even earlier, was more like a chain drug store than a posh department store).
