Warning the initial menu music is quite loud! After a couple of failures I finally manage to figure out the mechanics and win the first campaign level!

Never could understand the phenomenon of this game. It seemed to me like a constant earth level tweaker. Maybe your video will finally shed some light on the mystery.

@@guderheinz My first two attempts felt like that! Was more successful on the third.

Was definitely part of the core audience. Even went to sleep with the music on! Then you are properly invested. Or maybe obsessively engaged. Depending on the point of view. Peter Molyneux was God-sent for gaming at this period in time. Shaking things up a little! Tried to think of other similar games , but even SimEarth came after this. 😲 There was something special about having new genres invented in front of your eyes. It is harder to accomplish these days. It feels like everything has been done already. 🙂

I played the hell out of this when it first came out. There are some tricks. 1. To quickly claim land from the sea raise deep in the sea in the same area twice then drop it down once this will give you 9 flat land for the price of 3. 2. Forts are comfortable. People will stay in them longer before striking out to settle either keep some shacks or another trick is on occasion tactically raising the land near a fort bringing down the vehicle level and forcing the settler out to find greener pastures as soon as they leave return the land back to flat. You will have your original fort back and a settler free to make a new one on your cheaply made land. After awhile you will have a hub of forts you will no longer need to evict people from increasing your strength. 3. I make a settlement at least 2 levels above the sea, this gives at lease one flood without affecting your people. (One I thought I was being clever building building a land wall around my settlement to protect them. All flood does is drop all the land one level, I lose many good followers that day). 4. I cant quite remember if this works in Populous one (it certainly does in Populous II) rocks can be removed by submerging them in the sea. In II it takes a while for them to sink and if you recover the land too fast the rocks return slowly raising from the ground. Most of these rules apply for Populous II as well.

Lmao, I remember playing this as a kid, thinking the terraforming is cool, but ultimately didn't really get into it and went back to playing Xcom/Civ 1

I played the SNES version when I was a kid. I liked the game because it was weird and had a dark, strange vibe- I couldn't figure out how to make a knight or champion or whatever, though.

I just confused this game with "Power Monger", which was a great game i liked better than Populous.
