Popup scammers: Uncovering the nest

In one week in May 2016, I was shocked to discover that the phone numbers seen on fake malware popups are fronted by many different organisations who seem to take shifts of receiving calls from their victims. This video describes what I uncovered when I lifted the lid on these scam popups.

I cannot believe this is happening in India. As an Indian, I feel ashamed for such scams from India. This spoils the reputation of my country all over the world. I really want to say that you sir should take a harsh action on such people. You should contact Indian cybercrime division and make it sure that these fraudsters are put behind bars. The reason why such scammers are successful is the lack of knowledge of computer softwares and essentials. People should watch such videos and learn not to fall for such a scam. Thank you so much for revealing those people. At last, I want to state that do not consider such activities as the global image of India. We Indians are also scammed for such things. Someone should take a major step to stop this. Keep up the good work.

Yes I saw those 2 videos. Actually those 2 were the videos I stumbled upon to first and got to know all about this scamming things going on. And yes, I'm sorry to say that there is a lot of corruption in India. A lot! I'm really thankful to you that you spend time on and work hard to try to expose such scammers to not only make India safe and aware but the whole world. I'm sorry for the lack of acknowledgment from the Indian authorities. They won't realise this until someone is severely hit by such scams and the media reports it in a very dramatic way causing people to protest on streets and do silly stuff. Thanks again✌

Scams and scammers are found all over the world. These scams are running by chain of organizations located all over the world. These guys are low profile figures and getting used by mobs as guinea pigs. The world just have to increase the standards how internet works. This is nothing compare to counterfeit checks and forgery costing billion of dollars in loss worldwide. Also, Jim Browning is indeed a legend. I hope that one day he has his own non-profit security company helping people from these cunts.

A very close friend of mine fell for their trap and he was about to give his credit card info. But fortunately the internet was cut off. He then called me and I showed him your videos. Hey Jim! :) Just wanted to say amazing work. :) I have started scambaiting after My Mother almost became a victim. One scam blew my phone up calling every hour on the hour till I picked up. I have been propositioned by up to 15 different companies most in the north of India, and 5 here in The States (Wireshark is awesome). I also had one where the "technician" actually admitted it was a scam. He told me he was sick of it and trying to warn as many of us as possible. There are some decent folks there , at least.

If I were a Federal LEO, I would be taking a hard look at who controls those telephone numbers. All fraud linked to the telephone number would be punishable by the U.S. federal wire fraud statute (18 USC 1343) as well as the money laundering statute (18 USC 1956). Very interesting. I take it as a kind of hobby to find these numbers and call them just to waste their time. They usually curse me out when I either tell them I know it's a scam or when they figure out that I'm full of it (usually when I break into laughter or lay the dumb on too thick). +That's one of the things I like about what Jim Browning is doing. Other people record interacting with the scammers and having noisy fun with them. More entertaining than anything. I live in Miami fl I get insane fraud numbers from Robo calls. I don’t call call back or answer the phone they record my number and then start selling it to other scammers harassing me. So I did knowdest how they get your number now the calls happen around the time I think I pick up the call

Just a question, are you aware that if you are on a USA VPN, (the one I use is "HOXX VPN for firefox") and you type in misspelled website names e.g. yootube.com, fecebook.com, fgoogle.com etc you'll often get scammer pop-ups? (we don't get them much in the UK from my experience) so i'd give that a go, I often get pop-ups with fake BSODs and sometimes they even make a red screen and call it an "RSOD" with fake errors etc, but be aware if you were to make videos on them, some do show your IP address.

I usually lull scammers into thinking I am diminished before I regale stories of my imprisonment. Jim I live in FL and we are bombarded with scam calls that show they are FL numbers but when you call the number back, they seem to piggyback their numbers with actual florida residential orders, I even had a scam call from someone and while they were leaving a message on my voicemail, I noticed that they were using my number. In other words. The incoming call was from my own phone number. I was going to leave this call on the do not call list but I would be blocking my own number lol. How are they doing this Jim? I wish I could teach them a lesson as you have several times over. I usually play with them on the phone for a few minutes and then get nasty but they end up hanging up. every time I call back a number its a magic jack or voip caller so I can't get anyone on the line. Just out of curiosity, is it possible to clear those event logs and change all of those processes to "running" and change your NAP to on before allowing them to connect to your VM? I'd be super interested to see their reaction and if/how they still try to scam you at that point. It would be entertaining if nothing else. Also, isn't it possible that they are hiding behind another IP address using a program such as Peerblock? I would definitely think that this were the case if the IP addresses were showing up all over the globe, but I guess it's unlikely since so many are pinging back to ISPs in India. Just throwing out some thoughts. Despite being somewhat of a KZbin junkie, I only "subscribe" to a few channels. You, sir, have earned a subscription.

Should I ever be fortunate enough to do the investigative work you've demonstrated in your video, my next step would be to literally jump on a plane and go to India and confront them in there call center, now that would make for awesome viewing..
