I am a 77 year old woman, and so glad that I discovered this channel. I received a scam call a few days ago, telling me that there was a charge on my Amazon account in the amount of $999.00 for a Iphone.. I immediately hung up and called the number back, and got a recording that it was a none working number. Called my bank and everything was fine. Before watching your channels, I probably would have panicked and did the wrong thing. Thank you for helping the elderly to realize that they are being scammed 🙏

The displayed phone number will be falsified. Unless it's one of those scams where they need you to call them first - say, in response to a popup on your computer that you have a virus or something similar - you can assume that the displayed phone number is spoofed and meaningless. Some of the calls that I receive display a phone number that is a digit too long to be a valid phone number in my national system.

@E Van I don’t see the animosity being related to the ethnicity of the person they’re calling. Seems to me that they are truly disconnected from the person on the other end of the line, they’re just the client that “owes” them. The entitlement and encouragement from the scammer management leads the call centre employees to feel the same. They are reprimanded by management if the numbers dip, so they reprimand the client that isn’t paying them the money they owe. Maybe race plays into it but I really think its just a entitlement rage.

But often its a simple thing like that, only for a few pounds- probably a scam 80% of the time, but 20% of the time it saves their arse as some people close to me have been helped. I used to work in an ISP security call center. I got about 10 calls a day from victims of these scams. It was so heart breaking to hear the stories. One method I liked to teach people is the "I don't have it anymore" response. If they ever get an even slightly suspicious call about their car, computer, or bank they should tell the person on the phone "oh I don't have that anymore". You will know it is a scammer because they will instantly hang up. With a bonus that now they will most likely mark your number as someone they can't scam.

Some scam call centres just won't take the hint to mark your number as "do not call". I'm pestered almost daily with calls from one operation pretending to be a multitude of legitimate businesses. I can tell they're all from the one operation because (a) they play every robomessage twice before connecting you to a scammer; and (b) the scammers answer with a singularly unprofessional "Hello?" instead of the usual "Thank you for calling . How may I help you today?" I'd be ashamed to type the things that I say to insult them on multiple levels (some of it spoken through a megaphone into my telephone), and they _still_ won't mark me as a lost-cause "do not call".
@YukoValis2 жыл бұрын
@@willpugh-calotte2199 If you insult them they most likely will keep your number on their list just to harass you. They are vindictive like that. But if they genuinely think you don't have a car or computer etc then there is a better chance they will mark you as someone they can't scam.
@catfishbilly74252 жыл бұрын
@@willpugh-calotte2199 The best thing you can do to get the calls to stop is to just hang up. Don't press any buttons and don't talk to anybody. Just hang up. Eventually (it'll take awhile) your number will get marked as an invalid or not in use number and the calls will slow to few and far between. I used to get calls all the time, would repeatedly tell them not to call me (not in those words though lol). Then I started just hanging up and now I very seldom get scam calls. Maybe 1 or 2 every few months is all I get.

Thanks for mentioning that Michelle, and I hope you get a response on this. A diversity of language speakers eventually would be an important goal for the scam busting call center. I only speak English, but get Chinese speaking robo calls a lot here in US. I know they’re scammers because I’ll hear them mention Amazon or Verizon, FBI (ugh) said in the midst of what is indecipherable to me. I always feel sad and disgusted when I delete these on my voicemail when I think that some, especially first generation older Chinese Americans, are getting preyed on as easy targets.. I prevented my neighbor (actually a couple of times on different occasions) from getting scammed. The situation was some scam electric company would get into our apartment building, knock on doors and tell residents that they needed their account number, and even that they were sent by their current electricity provider ( all bs). Once they get that info they say you need to sign a contract, you’ll save a lot on electricity with this “new program”. Regrettably a neighbor victim of this said his electricity bill more than doubled (he’s speaks mostly Spanish). So, Anyway, I overheard them knocking on my other neighbors door, Eastern European who speaks a little English). By the time I got dressed to go over and warn her she’d already signed up. We went out and chased the person down the street and demanded the paperwork back. (we were like pit bulls, chasing a rabbit!). We got it and tore it up! Ha, Ha! Once we called police and informed all of our neighbors of this manipulative bait and switch we never saw them again.. Another time before that I intervened when I ran into one of these perps in the downstairs hallway and gave them such a lecture ( after scolding, I also suggested they can do better than this with their lives), told them to get out..this ran them out of the building before they had a chance to knock on doors (actually I did this on a couple of occasions ) I wasn’t afraid of them even though I’m older female and smaller, actually they were taken so off guard they were afraid of me (and maybe afraid of the truth, about what they do means). Thanks for reading! Be safe though..

The CJ scambait advice is particularly valuable. Most people think that only old and technologically inept people fall for scams. Truth is anyone can fall for a scam. Just remember there are probably at least a million people who're cleverer than you and wouldn't mind taking your money and crushing your ego. Hell, if I remember even Jim got scammed once (one of his previous videos). Just remember that.
@profonde34602 жыл бұрын
I've got link to video saved to put in a reply for any millennials, y or z gens, who comment or imply that people who get scammed are stupid, or like you said, it's older people. (I just put in a reply to 2 comments that saying 77 year old woman who said she hang up on robo spam call isn't legit nor be legit comment, because she's old & used an emoji someone younger wrote it, or a scammer wrote it. That's bit different what you said, but point is assumptions can be wrong). I have couple tricks in my personal details for when filling out forms online and only for official institutions do i put fully real. Once got a call & had details exact re me. Was only after I asked 3 times (at various times) which branch he as from, and he said road, but there's actually 3 on that. 3rd time he asked his voice raised a bit & as he said it again was in a tone like I was stupid. About 1 minute more conversation then he asked for password. Can't remember what I said but my tone was f-off. Here's that Jim Browning video kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3q6h2iciMaIeJo and it was only last year too so not like he was new to youtube, which was what the scam was re. (I'm not saying you are what I put in my first sentence by putting it lol). Did you see video where they sent a glitter package to a scam call centre? They're all worth watching but this one from 6 years ago is interesting, because Jim was sort of scammed by someone getting the video blocked in the UK kzbin.info/www/bejne/haDLZ5WMbauqitE

Well done everyone involved in this, no matter how small your part. Even if you're not one of the big creators doing it on camera - thank you! I've watched my grandma turn slowly from the sharpest lady you'll ever find, in to someone who will spend hours talking to these kind of scammers. Luckily as far as we can tell, she's never lost any money, but it's terrifying to know she doesn't fully understand why we're telling her not to do certain things. We have left post-it notes and warnings all around her landline and desktop to remind her, and see her several times a week, so fingers crossed nothing happens!
@stepheneyles21982 жыл бұрын
My mum (93rd birthday tomorrow!) get these calls every so often, and I'm thankful that she's *never* had an email account and doesn't use a computer or mobile phone. But as she's of the generation that was brought up knowing that it's rude to put the phone down in someone's face, she does talk to them a bit before hanging up! Thanks to Jim and the others for doing this, at least it disrupts them and keeps them 'on their feet' so to speak. more power to your combined elbow!
@runvnc2082 жыл бұрын
It would be better if there was an alternative to the landline for lonely elderly. Maybe some kind of remotely activated video conferencing system with a few friends and family? But at this point, the landlines are primarily a vector for fraud more than anything.
@cliffontheroad2 жыл бұрын
@@runvnc208 Might be better but there are walls you would have to break down. And orgainizing it would take time and money. Even with what we know and see, the gift cards are still purchased when there are warning signs where the cards are sold. In PA, phony people sign up real people for unemployment claims. Every week there are news stories. We hear nothing even IF they tried to trace the $$, and we don't know if the State Police did more than take the reports. Seattle / Washington paid out $50 million, or was it 600 million. Scams still continue. No offense. Suggestions are good but someone has to actually pick up the ball. Fortunately, this Internet group is making between 25 and 250 thousand each, every month, based on subscribtions and video views. They deserve it.
