HI..... I just contacted Porch Potty to tell them my solution, because I was having the exact same problems with the artificial turf as you Peachy. I wasn't wanting to pay for, or to haul up turf to the 8th floor of our condo. So I went to my local janitor store and he suggested a product called Good Riddance/ Chem Ecology is what it says on label. It's not just an enzyme it's actually filled with micrororganisms that eat up the smell. I pour it on once a week diluted it water and at this point, I'm just leaving it on. Our Cocker Spaniel loves it. She'll go on the potty now even just after I've poured it on! I am sooooooooooo happy. Problem solved I think? Just a suggestion for others. ; )

First off, thank you for posting these reviews of the Porch Potty. I have found them quite informative. They're both quite good, very thorough. That's the engineer in me talking. I wonder how the system would work if you had a drain, and could rinse it as often and thoroughly as you'd like? Based on your review, I don't think I would purchase one unless I can set it up that way. I would want to be able to rinse either of the grasses (synthetic or natural), on a daily basis. I did find it interesting that you mentioned in your original review, that the system was on the very high-end of what you were willing to spend in order to achieve your goals. And I think that figure was somewhere around 250 bucks. But with the system you've settled on, that's a drop in the bucket compared to what you spend on a yearly basis to maintain it. You're spending $1000 a year, cash, on replacement sod. Ouch! And I don't know what tax rate you're at, but in order to get $1000 in hand, you've got to earn somewhere around $1700 (depending on what state you live in). So roughly $1700 a year of your pre tax earnings are going to porch potty maintenance. That's pretty steep. If your dog lives another 10 years, you will have had to earn $17,000 in pretax income in order to pay for your dogs to use the John. The upfront cost of the porch party system is dirt cheap compared to what it costs you to maintain it. Thanks again for the terrific review. Gives me a lot to think about and consider.

Some people have dogs that have to be groomed for that each month, so she can be glad she doesn’t have that. Maybe she’s paying for convenience. Maybe she used to get her nails done each month for that and now doesn’t. Also, if she can buy sod during spring and summer at Home Depot or hardware store it would be much much cheaper. Sometimes you do what you can to keep your pups, keep them happy and keep your sanity at the same time. The synthetic grass is too much work.
@DeniseEggertwaterlily6 жыл бұрын
I can see your point about buying the real sod twice a month. Smaller dogs go to the bathroom more frequently. If it is a household where the sole occupant works or both occupants works , this has built in convenience and protects against messes. My co pays for my medication alone are more than $80.00 per month. Those who smoke are probably paying more than $80.00 per month for their cigarette habit. Its all relative. People choose to spend money on what is important for them.

You can make a one time purchase for a plastic/metal trellis/chicken wire/lattice cut to fit instead. I bought a Piddle Pad and threw out its fake turf first thing because I know the crevices will be IMPOSSIBLE to clean and maintain. Imagine the watery #2's that can get caught..... With the lattice, I simply use a toilet brush like a regular toilet. Also, keep in mind, plastic is porous and regardless of cleanliness, will eventually absorb all the noxious scents. So def weight your options. :-)

Any reason why you wouldn't try wee wee pads? Mon-Fri, I put 2 regular size pads down on top of container lids on my master bathroom floor for my 2 chihuahuas. They have full run of my bedroom so they can lay in their beds all day. When they need to go, they use their pads. Every night, I use toilet paper to pick up the poo & flush it down the toilet. I throw out the pads & Lysol the bathroom floor & wipe down w/ paper towels. Sometimes they miss the pad - no big deal. Clean up takes 5 mins everyday and total costs are about $12 per month (pads & paper towels). They are happy and so am I because I would hate to crate them all day. They go outside the rest of the time.

omg thank you soooo very much for the reviews. I have two 3 month old puppies and I stay in an apartment. I HATE taking them outside to us the potty because some residents don't clean up behind their dogs and either I would step in it (yuck) or my puppies would be a little too interested in all the other smells. plus it's snow on the ground and they are hating it. our temps today are 1degrees.that's too cold for anyone. I'm going to look more into this sod idea for our patio. thanks again!!!!

Hi, thank you for sharing your experience with this product and sod for dog potties. I have been doing a lot of research into it since I am about to get a new furry addition and want to train them at first on sod. I wanted to let you know that you can find sod much much cheaper at local sod companies or lowes/home depot. It's only available certain months at the last two, usually beginning in March, but can be found almost year round at sod companies. I was quoted between $4-$13 dollars depending on the place, as some have a minimum purchase amount, but is on average only $4-6 bucks for more than the size you need. It worth a few phone calls and going to pick it up from them, with as much as you've been paying.

I just ordered service for my new 8 week puppy last week. Everything was going good and now he is having accidents. I'm thinking like you said, it's not very fresh now. Great video, very helpful. I'm not in an apartment so this is to train him indoors. I am going to try sod from gardening center for one week and see how it goes. The only thing is I worry about bugs, for outside it wouldn't be a big deal but inside is a different story.
@fritzbiederstadt4869 Жыл бұрын
Very helpful. I was about to go with this solution but the need to keep refreshing the sod is just too costly. My goal is to keep this setup in the house at least initially. I think the smell might end up being an issue. Although I might look into growing my own replacement sod, just a thought. Seems like the only practical option is using some type of dog litter box brand. I need to figure this out soon because has has a 12 week Mini Dachshund arriving 'next week'. I had planned on simply outside only. But some complications my prove to be too difficult or make the training harder.
@treasuretrovel38164 жыл бұрын
It may be that you could train your dogs to poop on a pee pad and just use the porch potty for urinating. You could probably punch holes in the sod with a pitchfork to create drainage holes if you ever wanted to try watering/rinsing again. I just bought three PetLoos and have them lined up in tandem. It is an excellent design for drainage but people on Amazon recommend to replace the bad synthetic grass with K9GRASS which is a brand of synthetic that has more drainage holes and supposedly is not woven on the bottom so does not absorb urine. I ordered some so I will find out. For sure, to keep things from smelling, I know that I need to empty the catch basins (much more user friendly than the catch system on the Porch Potty) twice a day and rinse the units twice a day. Seems like a lot of work but I was having to spend a lot of time cleaning the porch using pee pads and the amount of garbage from the pee pads was obscene. If I have to revert to expensive real sod then I will do that. Thanks for your videos, they are very helpful. The 33 X 33 inch PetLoo is $99 on Amazon ($119 on PetCo). In contrast, the Porch Potty is around $300. One can get deliveries of real sod from PorchPotty.com and use on the PetLoo but would have to cut it. If one decides to just go for the real sod delivery system (either from PorchPotty or just buying at HomeDepot) then consider just getting a large plastic tray on which to place the sod. Dog.com sells replacement wire crate trays in many sizes. Alternatively, one can buy a washing machine tray from HomeDepot.

I have a 4 month old labrador (43 lb) who used to potty outside since he was 6 weeks old. The grass area was really near by so it made it easy for him to go (1-2min walk). However, since we moved to a new apartment he no longer feels comfortable going potty on this new apartment grass, and what is more, the grass area is now further (6-8min walk) we go through stairs, and separate doors, etc that by the time we get there he just sniffs and doesnt go potty. Wondering how sturdy this Porch Potty is for when he grows to be (80-90 lb)? Of course, I will want to believe we might be at a home with a backyard by then or that he would feel comfortable going potty outside again but just in case we are still at an apartment, would this be an investment? He will grow to be 80 pounds in less than 5 months. Do you think it is sturdy (heavy duty) enough to hold a large dog?

@Blue_Wolf_loves_lofi10 жыл бұрын
It's the same stuff you get already, but cheaper. As for smells, I'd assume it's due to the fact that you're not watering it, and I don't blame you. The way it's set up I would be afraid to water it too lol. This is why I'm making my own using a plastic under bed container. I am actually going to try adding potting soil under the sod to make it live longer to save on sod costs. There are drain holes I drilled on bottom on container and lid sitting under to collect liquids. I just plan to dump and scrub that part as needed to keep down smells. I'm pretty sure though that picking up the solids and having a much better area for the drainage/dumping it frequently and watering way more will make it smell tolerable. Dilution is the key there... and probably worth the effort.

I have two tweenie size dachshunds and trust me, they're just as active as i am when it comes to making it outside. And then there are those times when they don't. This new potty you're posting about, I'm not certain if my dogs are too big for it. Does it comes in different sizes? I like the idea of the sod, compared to the fake grass, but where I am, it's difficult to get any and the price is a bit high for my pocket to order thru the mail. Home depot in NYC might not have actual sod, as would the Long Island or outer boroughs might, compared to Manhattan. So I'll keep an eye open for something like this, with a more useful drainage system. Thanks for the post, it was truly informative about city life with dogs.

Not a nice thing to say for an answer. A dog or cat becomes part of the family and if you have a home, you can add one or more to it. Money spent, when you have an easier way of just walking the dog, is better spent on things that is needed for the whole family, including your pet. If you have the extra cash to spend on something that makes life easier for you, then you do as you need to, but to answer a person in that manner, wasn't right.

Surely the synthetic grass top would carry on working perfectly fine if you didn't just rinse "wash" it and took it into the bath/shower to deep clean it with some very light bleach solution. Its not even hard to do and most likely less effort than all the trips back and forth rinse "washing" it. Not only would it stay working fine but it would stop the build up of smell that you was experiencing. Also while the grass top is laying in the bath/shower give the drainer top a proper wipe to stop that build up of residue. You wouldn't need to do all that every time you empty the basin and would probably get away with just doing a deep clean once a week and rinsing it daily. How you use it seems a waste of money. You could quite easily just buy cheap grass patches from a home depot for next to nothing and replace it every week. Like you say with not adding water or anything, nothing really drips through so you could get rid of the whole set up and just put the grass patch down in the corner maybe onto a garden tray to catch any liquid that may seep through. Might be a hard pill to swallow after spending so much money on a glorified garden drainage tray but it seems like the best and cheapest way forward for you as that is effectively what you are doing now but at a high cost. At that, good video. It gave me a lot to think about for my future pup :)
