A word of clarification about the island of Vis: Hayao Miyazaki never mentioned it, and he never even visited Croatia. It's simply one of the closest "fan-favorites" runner up for Porco Rosso's cove. It's possible that the director knew of the island's existence because it was an air base during the Second World War, but to be certain about it would certainly be a bit of an stretch.
