That’s because it reminded him all his old memories when he was young and practiced with the same plane as Porco on the Lake of Como, he even showed me one rusty piece of plane he kept in his basement and said that “Marco has a great seaplane but mine was better!” We laughed so much, I love him

I am half italian and some members of my family in Italy worked for airplane companies there. When I was a kid, I used to play with a little silver plane my italian grandpa brought back from work and exposed in the entrance of his apartment. I was so moved when I saw this movie, I was feeling shivers running down my spine. When I see the black and white images at the end of the film, it makes me think of the old pictures of my grandpa where he is with the other workers of his company.

lyrics(English) Let's talk about the old times for once. The familiar cáfe we used to go. A colonnade of horse chestnuts could be seen from the windows. We made do with a cup of coffee all day. Recklessly fumbling for unseen tomorrow, Everybody entrusted the hope. Blew by hot winds of the tempestuous age, We felt the moment with all our bodies. Didn't we? We slept on street sometimes. We can't go anywhere. Together. We had no money, but somehow lived on. The poverty carried tomorrow. So many thronged a small lodging house, Frolicked till morning, and slept. Every day was burning just like a storm. We ran till we were out of breath. Didn't we? Look at the only picture I have left. The man with a mustache is you. There are some friends we don't know the whereabouts any more. But no one can say that everything of the day was empty. They still must be dreaming endless dreams, Must keep running. Somewhere.

In February 2021, Shuichiro Moriyama, who played Porco Rosso, the main character of Porco Rosso, died of pneumonia. I was 86 years old. Not only did I become a Ghibli fan when I saw this work, but there were many people who fell in love with a man named Porco Rosso. We pray for the souls of Shuichiro Moriyama, who played the best adult.
this time was when I first saw this film, finally. I knew there was a reason I felt compelled to finally watch it, even though most American fans of these films never talk about it. His acting conveyed such emotion, it was hard to feel like Michael Keaton could match that performance in the English release

Many people believe Joe Hisaishi arranged/wrote this piece, but it was actually a pre-existing song by the singer, Tokiko Kato, written and composed by her in 1987. While Hisaishi composed the background music of the movie, the person who arranged the ending theme you hear in the 1992 movie is Kanno Yoko and Junichiro Ohkuchi for the piano.

I grew up on Ghibli Studio animations, that was the only part In my childhood I honestly cannot forget...From Porco Rosso, Spirited away, My neighbour Totoro etc etc
First of all, I love this song so much. These lyrics make sense for the story of the movie. But I can't help but imagine how extream the time of her youth was. This is just my thought from what I read from Wikipedia and some other articles. This song was written from her experience with the Student Activism in the late 1960s in Japan when many students fought against their universities seeking their rights. She was one of the students who involved with demos with a hopeful ideal for their future. One incident triggered and spread to other universities and became extream. The sad thing was that some of those incidents ended up resorting to the violence causing a number of casualties including students with bright futures. That's why I believe, she wrote that nobody can say it was in vain because even if so, it's their memory of their youth fighting for the right thing. So, when I picture those realities while listening to this song, each of the sentences becomes so real and nostalgic trying to convey the virtue of a reckless pursuit for an ideal. I wholeheartedly wish she'd again sing this song somewhere in the future for us, especially young generations so we can learn what was missing in their ideal and the reason why they couldn't accomplish their dreams, as a storyteller and also as a witness of the time.

This song reminds me of my japanese grandma. I loved her so much. Thank you Hayao

You don't need to understand what this song says. Just being peaceful and relaxed with it is enough.

I've watched Porco Rosso when i was 11. I immediatly fell in love with Marco's thoughts and lifestyle, but i was so disappointed about the end of this film.Years later i found out that Gina eventually won the bet with Marco (because in the final scenes of the film,Fio flies over Gina's Hotel and in the back there's Marco's red seaplane) but this song gives me some doubts about Porco's return (in the final lines of the song Gina says "You're still running, somewhere" or "I have no idea where you are,but some of your friends are still here") I'M SO CONFUSED OMFG

I only heard of the backstory as well. Always thought Marco just disappeared to get away from the police/military and it was some bittersweet ending of how not all childhood romances come true.

I don't think that the song tells us the ending. Gina won the bet.

I'm italian, e posso dire che questo film è davvero meraviglioso, come tutti quelli dello studio ghibli (comunque si scrive canale, non chanale)

Yoko Kanno is credited for “arrangement”, making this her first work in anime. Had no idea she and Hayao crossed paths until today
