Porcupine Tree is one of the best bands no one's heard of. :)
@petsounds36122 жыл бұрын
That's pretty inaccurate imo. Maybe for the pure radio pop listener but for those with even a passing interest in the genre, Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson is one of the biggest names in modern Progressive Rock. Between PT, Bass Communion, his solo work, production, collabs with Opeth, remixes of King Crimson albums, etc. there is a ton of exposure.
@Lexcoaster2 жыл бұрын
@@petsounds3612 It was of course a bit of an overstatement. ;) The thing is you have to be seriously interested in music to be familiar with the name.

This album melts me. Completely encompassing the disillusionment of the late 90s that was met in films like fight club and American beauty, and in other music like Ok Computer. Highly recommended to listen to the whole thing, and remember what real dehumanised angst feels like.

trivia note: string parts were written by Wilson and Dave Stewart, and orchestrated by Stewart. Who's Dave Stewart? No, this isn't the one who's (the lesser) half of 80s pop duo The Eurythmics; this one's a brilliant composer, keyboardist and arranger with a long career that dates back to the early 1970s when he was a mainstay of the Canterbury branch of progressive rock, a late 70s stint with drummer extraordinaire Bill Bruford, and since then has created a few albums of "pop music for adults" with singer Barbara Gaskin (and occasional guest drummer Gavin Harrison... who you just listened to here). Dave also wrote a column for Keyboard magazine for many years. And he's still at it; he and Barb are doing a show in London this summer.

Worth mentioning that this track comes at the end of an hour(+) of music, and the crescendo of this song is the crescendo of the album. Really fits in if you know the context of the complete arrangement.
@unoriginal_name70912 жыл бұрын
I'd argue Anesthetize is really the cresendo of the album, and the back half of the record is dealing with the aftermath which leads to a bit more intensity toward the end (I mean Sleep Together is about the protagonist killing himself and trying to sway his lover to join him) but not the highEST point of the record. No shade though, Fear of a Blank Planet is one of my top five records.

Some older PT is killer as well. Radioactive Toy is a classic, Every Home is Wired, Waiting Pt 1, A Smart Kid or Lightbulb Sun. I love all eras of this band but I think the early stuff doesn’t get enough love…this song is my least favorite on this album. Overall, this is a kick ass album. I seen them on tour for this one, the venue was absolutely packed. During Anesthetized the crowd went completely silent. I’ve never been to a rock show and seen that many people so entranced to a performance, you could literally hear a pin drop. Quite extraordinary the experience. Although I will say every show I’ve been to and seen Steven play has been amazing. I’ll never forget PT first gig in Florida, a small venue with only about 50 people there. Very intimate and very engaging, I was absolutely enraptured in the moment. The next time they came to town the crowd grew exponentially, deservedly so…brilliant band.
