Oh wow, this is like a variation between a traditional dash cam setup (free standing camera) and a Wolfbox mirror (static placement). I can't deny the form factor of the Wolfbox mirrors, but I do think it's crucial to be able to adjust the front facing camera to capture the best footage. In any case, thanks for sharing! Thanks for the amazing review as always Alex. Av had this dashcam for like 3-4 months now... After months of search for dashcam for my brand new Rav4. I settled for 2 different entities, and one of them is this PRD80, majorly for its OEM look and inbuilt GPS. It's very difficult to find a mirror dashcam that has its wiring from within, rather than all the cubweb plugging design from the top that many has. One major thing I noticed in my search was that, no single mirror dashcam has all my requirements in one 🤦🏼‍♂️. I was very clear I wanted a mirror dashcam, but most non mirror ones (standard dashcam) seems to be having better properties than the mirror ones. I was first on Tombo 360X, to G900 and many more. Below are my improvement recommendations to pormido. This prd80 would have been amazing 1) If it was on starvis 2 sensors 2) Make the front a 4k (a true one) 3) Make the rear cam 2k 4) Infuse a motion sensor and 5) Make the design of the front cam, such a way that the wire comes directly from the center back of the the camera itself, rather than the sideways (I was really disappointed by that). I nearly look elsewhere bcs of that, but there OEM design and inbuilt GPS kept me going back to them 😀. I hope there developers look into my comment, they will be untouchable if they can execute those recommendations.... So far, I am enjoying it. I had to complement the prd80 with a standard viofo dashcam to get all those desires filled.

You're welcome M! Yeah, that is one of the reason I recommend running 2 independent dash cam setups at minimum, not only you get redundancy in case one fails but you can also combine features that may not be available on a single dash cam. And good inputs for dash cam improvements! Cheers!

Hi D! Ah, that's a good question that I get often and what I like to say is that there is not such thing as the best dash cam. I think the best mirror dash cam (for you) depends on what you are looking for in a mirror dash cam. I run different ones on my cars so what I usually tell people looking for the right dash cam for them is to start by picking how many cameras does it need to have (2 or 3). Now that you have narrowed your selections, consider how much you want to spend on one, that will narrow your choices even further. Then consider any special features you are looking for such as 360° video, Side Camera, Blind Spot Warning, Backup to SSD, Parking monitor without hardwire, detached cameras, Starvis 2, Etc. Finally you would want to compare video quality of your final choices. And I just began working on a video to compare my top picks for different categories, Stay tuned, Cheers!

Is this camera heat resistant? I live in Tx and the last 3 mirror cams i bought did not do so well in Tx heat. All 3 got so hot that they actually burned the tip of my finger just enough to leave my finger tingling & they all eventuality stopped working. And before you mention it, yes i know that there are other cameras i could get but the reason why i get the mirror variation is b'cause i have limo tint on my car, so i use the camera as my rear view mirror. Plus it's hard to see that i do have a camera so most people think that they can get away with driving like id*ots, till i show them that i in fact do have a dashcam and the look on their faces is priceless.

Hi D! The dash cams is rated by Pormido at a maximum of 160°F. However yes I normally do not recommend mirror dash cams for harsh environments like extreme heat, this style of dash cams generate a lot of heat (similar to 4K dashcams) and operating them on a very hot areas can be an issue. Cheers!

Hi R! Yeah while mirror dash cams can be used similar to a mirror when the panel is off, the reflection is different, it will not be as bright as a normal mirror since a normal mirror is not translucent and instead is fully reflective since it's only function is as a mirror where the mirror on LCD dash cams are mean to function both as a mirror and also as a LCD mirror. I have a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 with tinted windows. Do you know how well the rear camera would perform if mounted on the inside? Do you have any videos demonstrating running the cable and camera to the handle in the bed door which is where the current rear camera is located?

Hi! It will work thru it to a certain extent during the day (depending on the window tint percentage) but at night it will be similar to wearing sunglasses at night Window tint has the same effect on dash cam cameras (again depending on how dark your tint is, it can make the image darker or completely black it out) Cheers!

I've seen some videos where they "modify" the third brake light which is located at the top of the rear window and insert/seal the camera in the light itself. I may consider that. This particular device seems to be at the top of the best of list. Is there any other model you would suggest over this? Also, do you have a wiring video to enable the reverse parking guidelines or is it pretty straight forward? Speaking of the reverse parking guidelines, do you happen to know how well this would or wouldn't work if the rear camera was placed on the rear glass in trucks like my GMC Sierra?

I'd be interested in seeing a view from inside the vehicle, looking at the mirror while driving. How bad is the flicker (I saw the lights on the building at the end flickering some)? How bad is the glare when using the rear camera vs. just the mirror? I'm on my third (WoolfBox 950 now) and while the glare is better than the other two it is still there (even trying an anti-glare filter, that was annoying). The flicker is also annoying...some cars need a 60hz filter and others need the 50hz to somewhat mitigate that. I guess I'm really more interested in an electronic mirror like on newer cars. However, my mother-in-law was in an accident that other person was able to claim was her fault (only witness was the other driver's sister) that some kind of dash cam would have come in handy.

Hi C! Ah yes the infamous glare, unfortunately all mirror dash cams (including OEM LCD mirrors) are plagued by this to an extent, due to the limitations of current video sensor technology (actually I posted about this subject on the channel, check under Community if you want to read it). What I usually do to minimize glare is I mount the rear camera as high as possible and I aim it slightly down. If mounted low and horizontal to the cars behind you, the camera faces the headlights of coming vehicles directly which can exacerbate the glare issue (same as someone shinning a light directly to your eyes). High mounting and tilt has helped me reduce the glare but won't eliminate it completely. And I have another video coming up where I cover this method in more detail, stay tuned. @@AlexAutoFun I keep mine tilted up which works great 99% of the time (other than catching the dome light). I haven't driven my wife's 2024 Venza Limited since the day we picked it up, so haven't tried the e-mirror yet 🙂. She was having a similar problem a different creator had in that her glasses were "wrong" for using the e-mirror. New glasses helped that quite a bit.

Alex, would it also be possible to wire this mirror cam to the ADAS system since it is right there? I know there are a couple of adapters that you can buy but just curious. EDIT: I just saw on amazon that you have to hardwire it with the included hardwire kit and it says that you cannot plug it into the lighter socket so that probably means you cannot use the ADAS either. Also too bad it doesn't have WIFI.

Ah yes here is one of those adapters kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmG5kqOCbJWgbcU Unfortunately it does not have enough power to drive it (at least the one for my vehicle since the adapters are vehicle specific) but the other challenge is that the PRD80 requires hardwire connections and the mirror power adapter output is USB or DC plug. Now there is likely someone out there who has tapped for power directly from the mirror area with a hardwire kit but most installers will usually tap the fuse box and route the power cable. Cheers!

Hi T! This is universal kit for vehicles. If your current mirror uses a normal mounting tab like the one shown on the video nothing else will be needed. And if your mirror mounts to a different type of mounting tab, I placed links in the video description to the specialty bracket adapters. The other option is for the installer to replace the specialty tab with a normal tab (link to the normal tab and adhesive in the video description). The third option would be obtain the bracket adapter from Pormido. Hi L! Ah yes, well the V5 has been out longer, it's a real good dash cam and we know it's reliable. The PRD80 is newer (which is I always say is neither a plus or a neg as newer has latest tech but an unproven track record) and has the extra res and zoom feature. There also some significant differences between the V5 Pro and the PRD80 including integrated camera, parking assist without the extra connection and a bit more, so I think it will come down to what feature is most important to you when deciding between this two direct mount dash cams.
