The 718 Cayman S and 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 share the same platform and, in the case of this heavily optioned Cayman, many of the same features. Their engines couldn't be more different: 350-horsepower turbocharged flat four and 394-horsepower naturally aspirated flat six. For this review, we asked which one is better drive drive and came away with a surprising answer.

I own a 718 Cayman GTS 2.5 and love it. The low-end torque of the turbo models helps to overcome the long gearing issues that have plagued the platform since it's inception. Add an aftermarket exhaust, put it through the hands of a professional tuner and you get a 460 hp unicorn that feels stock, is easy to daily drive and will max your smile-o-meter on the backroads. It shouldn't come as a surprise, but Porsche makes excellent vehicles.

Hey, actually having a 981 GTS, im looking for a 718 S or GTS 2.5. In fact, im looking for a manual gearbox, and the thing you say about the long gearing is what lead me to think that a turbo boxster/cayman is what should be aimed at... it will clearly make more sense that way... And I think the better châssis, steering, interior makes it for the sound for me... Im now more into feeling the driving than listening to the car. And im a musician lol Plus, as you said, as a turbo engine, you can upgrade it like hell !

As a dealer (who typically has various Porsches on hand), this video spoke to me as it can be really hard to choose between some of the newest Porsches. On paper you may think you have a clear winner, but then the actual drive of the car reveals something you weren't expecting. It is obvious that both are outstanding Porsches, and thanks for doing a fine job evaluating these cars for all of us!

I love both cars. Personally I loved the look of the red GTS over the green. The Boxster is one of my favorite Porsches that I have owned. It is an amazing experience driving the canyons in a convertible with my wife. It is also the only Porsche she has not complained about my owning because of how fun they are to drive.

Thanks for the comparison 1 mile review. I have a 2018 718 Cayman GTS with a manual transmission, purchased new in 2020. Because of the 4 cylinder and the fact that Porsche announced that they would release a naturally aspirated 6 cylinder for 2020, the car sat, unsold, at the dealership for 20 months. I got lucky and picked up the $100K MSRP car for $75K. I have no problem with a 4 cylinder. The performance is great, or great enough, and I love the sound. I had my eyes on the car for the entire 20 months. I feel that the car was made just for me. I recently drove a 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0 at Barber Motorsports for 2 days. I have to say, I noticed very little difference between that and my car. Although in theory I like what Porsche did with the 718 GTS, I would say that it was likely not necessary to upgrade the displacement. They were just responding to the customer, which is what Porsche does. Like Damon, I am, and have been, a huge fan of the Cayman. Spot on review of both cars.

I have a 2018 718 Boxster S MT and when the 4.0 GTS came out I thought for sure I would have to upgrade. But the truth is, my car is so much fun I can't really justify the cost to upgrade. Especially for the type of driving I love... It just eats up twisty roads and is generally great for autocross style driving. Maybe if I lived in Germany and drove the autobahn often...

They perform very differently. The 2.5t has gobs of torque flat almost all the way through. You really have to ring out the 4.0 to access the performance and most of the max HP is up top and very little torque. Also, get a $1k tune on the S, youre keeping up with the GT4RS

I am wanting a Cayman and was really set on the 4.0 but the price of a used Cayman S always me to get some nice aftermarket forged wheels, PPF, Fidelity Platinum Warranty, and other goodies and still come under the 4.0 price tag. The fours don’t have turbo lag that I notice. But there is a turbo threshold that people often mistake for lag. That’s different and it’s a non issue when you keep it in the right gear. I have a flat four manual and it’s as fantastic for the roads around me. So much torque. And you still get to Rev it out. As for the sound, I love it. It’s not tuneful as such but it’s dramatic when you wind it out.

Morning! I’m the owner of a 2022 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 in the Bay Area. Would have loved to see the comparison to the Boxster GTS 4.0 to my model, as opposed to the Cayman S. Great vid Just finished watching the whole video. A few thoughts: 1-The 10mm lift is a key option. I didn’t order it and regret the decision. 2- rare colors and configurations get more attention. My GTS 4.0 is in FrozenBerry Metallic. She gets a fair amount of attention. More than I anticipated. 3- I’ve only been to a few Cars and Coffee, but my GTS gets a fair amount of traffic. In part because of the color and the 4L engine. 4- I wanted a GTS 4.0 because these NA engines are a dying breed. Cheers

I had a 2018 Cayman S and now have a 2023 Cayman GTS, both with manual transmission. One thing that doesn't seem to get mentioned, and this probably only applies to manual transmissions cars, is that even though the 2.5T generally has more low and mid-range torque the 4.0 has more right off idle. With the 2.5 you kind of had to modulate the clutch and throttle in order to get going smoothly. With the 4.0 you can ease off the clutch much more casually without having to modulate the throttle as much. I almost think it would be a good car to teach someone how to drive standard without worrying too much about stalling the engine. After 2k, yeah, the 2.5T was stronger but when you get to about 5k the 4.0 will start to pull harder. The 2.5T was a pretty smooth engine but the 4.0 is MUCH smoother. In terms of sound I had no issues with the 2.5T but the 4.0 is on another level - not just in tone but the way the sound personality changes with RPM and load. I liked my 2.5T. I like my 4.0 much more.

Good comparison. Both cars “wake up” even more with aftermarket mods. Changing the exhaust system on the 4.0 has quite an impact on the sound level at lower revs, but doesn’t release much extra power. Adding a tune to the 2.5 turbo has quite a dramatic impact - taking it to 420HP and even more torque. An out of warranty 718S with a tune is quite fun to drive in any situation, and is easier on the wallet. Love them both though.

Unrelated to this specific video I would like to ask Damon a question about his 987. I understand that you installed a lighter flywheel, can you give us a handle on the impacts of that and how much lighter it is? I am doing some weight reduction on mine and Im thing about that mod.- Thanks- Allan
@damonlowney
@damonlowney Жыл бұрын
Glad to answer. I installed the Aasco 13-pound single mass flywheel part# AM10-6412-11. I also installed a Sachs sport spring-centered clutch disc, Spec pressure plate, spec metal throwout bearing. At the same time, Wevo semi-solid transmission mounts. A bit more NVH, but not bad at all in my opinion, much less than what I was expecting. The engine revs more quickly, but not as quickly as I was expecting. Pulling away in first is nearly unchanged from the stock flywheel; my best comparison is that the difference in how 964s drive with stock vs lightweight flywheels is much larger and more noticeable. In a nutshell, I love this flywheel because it makes the engine slightly revvier with slightly better throttle response, but with none of the drawbacks people normally associate with lightweight flywheels. However, if you're hoping for it to completely change the character of the car, I don't think that's what you'll get (unlike in a 964). The only reason I might advise against installing a lightweight flywheel is that experts I trust have told me they can introduce some bad harmonics into the M96/M97 engine and make it more likely to break a crankshaft, which are not as strong as in, say, a GT3. So to help with that, I also installed an RSS 608 harmonically-damped underdrive pulley, though I did that after driving with the stock pulley for half the year (supply chain issues meant I had to wait 10 months for my damped underdrive pulley). I figure that many, many more people have run this flywheel with no broken crankshafts, so I was willing to take the chance. I would recommend installing the damped undedrive pulley (which does require grinding off some of the timing boss). The proper way to run these flywheels, I have been told by the same experts, is to balance it to the engine, which ideally means factor the flywheel into an engine rebuild. However, one of those experts also told me that I could have had the flywheel balanced, much like a tire/wheel package is balanced (but by taking metal off rather than adding weights) to at least make sure it spins perfectly smoothly. I didn't do this, so I will if the flywheel ever comes off again. However, I am comfortable running it as is and had a great oil analysis after last autocross season.

I have a 2020 GT4 and I have to say the engine is pretty special. The GTS version is slightly detuned but I’m not sure what else they took out of it. That said buying a GTS now will cost more than what I paid for the GT4. I would not bother daily driving the car but it sure is fun on banzai runs. I think it might still be a bit soft as a dedicated track weapon but within the Porsche lineup. This car is the most fun for the buck. I’ve had six Porsches over the last 35 years including a GT3 RS. The 992s are surely more capable but there’s a point where too much sauce no matter how tasty doesn’t always improve the experience. I’d also agree the flat 4 deserves better ratings. If you just want to be fast, a PDK with a good engine tune will get you right on the ass of any GT4, for a driver with similar skills.

I have a 2018 718 Cayman GTS with PDK in GT Silver and I absoultely love it. I do love the Python Green color and although the sound of the 4.0 is a bit better the 2.5 turbo still has a great sound especially in more spirited driving.

I own a '23 Cayman GTS with PDK, and think a better comparison would be Cayman S vs Cayman GTS and Boxster S vs Boxster GTS.....have each with PDK and Manual, then you can make the comparison. Extremely difficult to find any GTS and really enjoy the car!

I had an '09 Carrera S with PDK, and it was amazing...I tracked the car at Porsche HPDE events and really enjoyed the car. The Cayman GTS with PDK is even better, and very enjoyable but I'm still in breakin period so I haven't taken to track yet. It has plenty of power from a stop and in normal mode easy to drive...when in sport mode, it wakes up quite a bit but I only use on the challenging roads. By the way, I'm getting 32 mpg on the highway with cruise set at 68, so it's also an economy car :) .

Your scoring metric is not really an accurate metric to compare car types. It's too dependent on specific specs like color and transmission choice. Shame you can't compare boxster s vs boxster GTS or Cayman s vs Cayman GTS - same transmission vs same transmission... and drop the color from being a factor in your rating. Also not sure how you wouldn't give a convertible a higher fun factor?? The ability to drop the top or keep the top up absolutely increases fun factor...

These 2 cars are quite different - one has a flat NA 6 cyl engine, it's convertible and has a manual transmission. The other is 4 cyl turbo engine, it's a coupe and has a PDK auto transmission. And on top of that you drove the Cayman harder in Normal mode and the Boxster you drove harder in Sport mode!? Still... thanks for the review tho

I dont know that you can accurately compare the sound in a convertible to a coupe of the same car. Of course the 718 S sounds louder, the engine is inside the cabin. In the Boxster with the top down, you obviously have a lot more insulation between the engine and your ear, especially the loss of N/A induction sound. I'm surprised this obvious difference was lost on the host in this video.

The 4.0 has so much more potential, yes you can chip the 2.5, but I do want to wind it out still. Any kind of oap/manifolds or headers will add some serious power and torque. The 2.5 is much better suited to the pdk so you aren't losing boost between shifts, the pops and bangs are way too much, and it's a shame to not have the best manual in the industry. I'm a bit biased as I have an inconel setup on my 4.0, hardly a need to downshift in most daily driving scenarios. I would also agree on a longer review.

He shows the prices for both in the video. The S is actually more than the GTS by $2K. It is a heavily optioned S but when you add all of the things that come standard on the GTS, the price isn't 'that' different.

You can’t compare those two or any sports cars for that matter in a one mile Sunday driver speed limited drive I had the 4cyl now with the gts 4.0 Yes the low torque is better on the turbo and the under 3500 rpm the gts is quieter but as far as drama is concerned man what a difference the flat 6 4.0 whales up and down up and down and screams while the 4 cyl gives the same monotonous tone throughout the power band So drama wise it’s a no brainer but in some other aspects the turbo is great and even better than the 4.0 like low torque fuel economy maintenance costs

Your point is well taken, but a direct comparison of engines was never the purpose of the video. As someone who was slightly involved with setting this up - 😜 - the idea was to compare the extremes of the 718 platform - body style, engine, and transmission, without dipping into the GT cars. As an alternative to the much rarer 4.0 GTS models, I believe the flat four turbo models aren’t the “major downgrade” in performance that is sometimes reported by journalists. It’s certainly not like the 911/912 or 914/914-6 differences. We should all be grateful that Porsche offers so many different configurations and options, especially in these crazy times of supply chain issues.

@@M_IkeLeBlanc No one said they (4pot turbo) were necessarily a downgrade in performance. But they were a massive downgrade in sound and character. The 4pot turbo is absolutely nothing like the n/a flat 6 when you get over 5K RPMs.

@@wymotome - while I agree about the sound characteristics of the 4.0 being better than the 2.5, it’s all relative to me since my previous car was a 2018 Audi TTRS. Neither of the Porsche engines come close to the rumble and growl of the Audi 2.5L Five cylinder.

Boxster and Cayman are ONLY referred to as 7 eighteen in America. The rest of the world uses 7 one eight. Only in America have Porsche Type numbers been incorrectly pronounced. The 9 eleven is the only exception. Read Ferry Porsche's autobiography for confirmation.

It's hard to believe that a man who would preface anything about these two cars with "... compared to my Camry ..." wouldn't give each a rating of 11 out of 10 in each category. I used to drive my base 2018 Cayman (6 spd manual) more sprited (read way harder) than in this video , even when I went to pick up milk, and I would come home each time with a racing heart. A 4.0 GTS with PDK? Jeebus. I might have met every policeman in my slightly rural area. 😂 I now have a Macan S and enjoy not chatting with police.
