Excellent Review AJ, and you illustrated the 718 really well - well done. You were lucky you had such good weather at Knockhill, and on the B934 to Dunning Glen and Dunning! On the public road, that car can easily exceed the speed limit in 2nd - so you only need the first two gears! Great stuff - great video - many thanks.

Awesome an informative. I have ordered my Spyder without seeing it in real life lol 😆. Im so excited although I'm having to wait until the 2022 model production run. Can't sleep now will watch another 100 times

I love the cayman, and especially the GT4. *But* im really not in agreement with some of the reviews. *For me, the biggest value of this car is a simple fact that it is being sold again* rather than how much better the car got, because enjoyment speaking, it did not get better for the following reasons: *The meh/bad (ok bad is way too strong of a word):* 1. the engine DOES NOT feel special at all. Its a bored and stroked up 4.0L from the 3.0L carrera. It DOES NOT sound much better than say even a 981 GTS or a 981 GT4. It however, DOES SOUND VERY GOOD in our current generation of past 2 years, where everything has particle filters and terrible sounding engines. Whereas the 4L in the GT3s sound special. Ofc, they had to do this to keep production costs lower, price lower, and keep Caymans below the 911 which is understandable. 2. All lot of the stuff being boasted in these reviews are NOT unique to the GT4, and are often times common Porsche options. 3.THe car's chassis is good, but stilll practically the same thing from 2013. The suspension setup and GT3 front end is really the star here and obviously makes a significant difference. 4. All this praise about balance, feeling nature, being telepathic to drive etc, applies to 981 as well, and most of 718 (other than PDK being a little strange with 718 compared to 991 and 981, but this car is manual anyways so PDK shouldn't be compared). 5. *still has the terrible 981gt4 gear ratio*. Really locks the car's performance down... *The good:* -its being sold again and not in limited quantity (or at least a promise of a quantity that will supposedly satisfy the market). Hurray! NO more allocation wars! Depreciation should be normal (well. for a GT car). -despite reusing most of what the 2013 base car is, its *still an INCREDIBLE car* The car is ahead of its time and can remain competitive in the current market. -still extremely enjoyable, just not by an amount that people hype it up to be.

I have the 718 '18. Always call it seven one eight. Can't wait to test drive the GT4 though I have no idea why I need +400HP LOL. All the electronics are nice but I often turn them off to experience the awesome 718's handling, speed, and sound.

I’ve been looking into the car (especially GT4) since it first officially got revealed. Love it so much. And i really want to suck up all the information about it and want to know and see always more about it. A little bit like an addiction I just wanna see more of it. And then there was this near one hour video I found from you guys.Thanks guys really very good review lots of information and also very cool to see the actual engine half cut up haven’t seen that one yet. Gave a thumbs up which you definitely deserved.

This is the engine the Cayman 718 needed. With Cylinder-bank disabling, and Stop-Start it would deliver materially lower CO2 emissions than going to the in-line 4 Turbo (which when the turbo kicks-in above 2500rpm, drinks petrol and negates any emission benefit of going to a 4-cyl). What Prosche need to do is to put this into the entry-level Cayman and the Cayman S. The GT4 is a track-focused car, and is a little bit more hardcore (stiffer suspension, big rear wing, 20in wheels, manual only). Not many will drive it as a daily (although you can). So Porsche, please put this 6-cyl NA engine into the Cayman S. It will make the 718 (ok, call it something else), the car it has always needed to be.

Perhaps I need to hear one of each in person, but the sound in the 718 variants leave much to be desired over the 981. Otherwise, both look fantastic.

@TCaad10 The 991 GT3 engine was derived from the 9A1 in the Carrera and 981, so I don't see how an NA 9A2 with 33% larger displacement is any less of a GT engine.

Actually, the Cayman is one of the easiest cars to work on. The parcel shelf panel and seat panels give pretty wide access to the engine.

A shame they could not put a more appropriate gear ratio into the Spyder. The gears are too long for the road. Might make sense for the race track in the GT4 but not for the cruise on the weekend... Reving out second gear on public roads and your are so much above speed limit.... and in trouble!!!

I'm very excited about this car, but kind of disappointed by the sound, at least from videos. I was hoping it would get closer to that glorious wail of the GT3 since it shares the same bore and stroke and revs out to 8k, but it actually seems to have gone backwards a bit towards the 718 boxer-4 growl from the 3.8 in the 981 GT4. I hope the US version without particular filters rectifies some of that.

How was the launch (with/out launch control)? Would you say it launches as good as the previous Carrera S? The 718 S and GTS has this annoying turbo lag noticeable during launching which just kills the fun and the only way to minimise it (not eliminate it) is to activate launch control.

I thought this was a fantastic review, and a refreshing change from so many reviews that focus on performance numbers and capabilities that will be irrelevant to 99% of buyers 99% of the time. I fell in love with the 718 Spyder at first sight, and now, thanks to your excellent review I have a real sense of what it's like to drive and also what it would be like to live with on a daily basis. The Spyder’s profile is much more elegant than the Cayman/GT4. The Cayman always looks a little “stubby” - it’s roofline needs to be 40-50mm lower, which I know would be very difficult to achieve. Great cars, though. I’d be happy to have either of them in my garage.

Ace of Spades I think the new corvette will be a terrific car, but having said that it doesn’t compare to a GT3 or GT3RS. Time will tell when the new ZO6 and ZR1 arrive but it still would not change my mind my next cat will be a GT3. Porsche quality and longevity is far superior to that of Chevy just look at resale values. I promise you no one at Porsche is concerned in the slightest. Rick

Don't really like that Spyder's soft top roof being manual. I'd get the Cayman GT4 in a daily driver build but not sure about the gearing. I wonder if the next gen Cayman will have 6 cylinder engines.

Careful on showing the speed, the UK fuzz have caught a KZbinr based on working out speed past landmarks, so don’t make it easy for them! Good review

As a current 991.1 GTS manual owner, I'm hesitant about upgrading to the GT4, mostly due to the gearing. There isn't enough torque being produced to justify the ratios. These cars aren't slow, but I've driven a 981 GT4 on a track many times, it works there and only there. If you want to go through the mountains with these, you're 2nd hear mostly and have no pull out of the corners. It's a shame that Porsche can't produce more tq from a 4.0l these days.

If you are in the us, sharkwerks does shorter ratios for the gt4. They did it for the previous model so I guess they'll do it for this too

Really good review. Did you pick up on whether Porsche will be bringing out a GTS/S 718 with the Flat 6? The wing and lack of sound insulation make the GT4an impractical daily driver - at least for me.

Still enormous long gearing. 2nd gear at 8000rpm is 88 mph or 141 kmh, 3rd almost 190kmh, 4th 240kmh. Ruins promising engine, when you must overtake in 1st gear some ordinary TDI engined car, or 1.0 petrol turbo

@@autogefuehl The tall gearing is a necessary compromise in order to meet emissions regs. If tall gears are the price I have to pay for a naturally aspirated flat six with an honest to goodness stick shift, sign me up.

Excellent review video. However, I would disagree about the carbon seats in the GT4. I find them quite comfortable and from a resale perspective I wouldn't buy the GT4 without them.

Please don't tell me the GT4 has a harsh Ride Like the Focus RS. I had a focusRS and had to get rid of it because it was way too stiff I'm hoping the GT4 is not even close to that can you comment on that?

Hey Porsche... I know this is nitpicking... I mean hey, I’m glad that Porsche still making manual sports car and hey sticking with NA is awesome. But what’s the point of a manual and a free high revving engine if you are literally driving with 3rd gear 90% of the time... at least give us some shorter gearing in an “extra option” maybe attached to “club sport” or something... this 911 protectionism is getting really stale now.

It has not gained much weight, but the way weight is reported has changed in the EU. Apparently only up 30kg from last model.

Not a great review. You missed many of the key benefits: you mentioned it has PASM, which every Porsche sports car has - but not that it has a fully adjustable GT3 suspension. The German presenter (sorry, I forgot his name) is much more detail oriented.

@@Xynteon Your "Bi-Xenon" is HID. High Intensity Discharged headlights which is old tech that started in the 80s well 90s but they are ancient. I have owned 28 Porsche cars including 2 currently so yeah, i called myself Porscheguy and you should stick with your Acura

@@chuchum3 Didn't say it wasn't HID the point is why are you suprised that Porsche sells it as an option because they're notorious for selling everything as an option instead of standard. Porsche is still my favorite car manufacturer though. Btw i don't own an acura RLX i'm european, it's just an old username which stood for relax so take a chill pill and do that.

As a start, please tune in to what the animal leather industry tried to do here with our channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIHCdKmCocZ5oqs In general, depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat would be the reason no.1 in other cases, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you accept it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and destroys the environment, you make them more profitable. Also, if you turn the argument around "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize how biased the argument is. After all, would you care for which exact body part you would be murdered? Or imagine someone robs you on the street and beats you to death - would it matter to you if it was for your Smartphone or for your purse? The animal agriculture industry occupies 2/3 of all farm land on this planet which cannot be used for direct human nutrition then. That is extremely inefficient. The no.1 cause for deforestation is the animal industry. It is also one of the biggest contributor to climate change. The amount of land, resources, energy and water being used is beyond imagination. For the alternative, you can either use artificial fabrics which can be made from recyclables (we have already shown a lot of vehicles that use great fabric seats from PET-bottles etc.) or more and more also from plant-based materials (like Pinatex). And even if you would create a seat completely with petroleum without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is nothing in comparing just to once fueling up your car. In practical reasons, fabric or microfibre seats are just more useful. You do not sweat in summer and it is not cold in winter. And if you want the slick look or something to wipe clean easier, that is possible with animal free leatherette. Using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all it is just common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

Its an Audi and probably the TT hence the big tunnel fo the gear box that in a front drive car is located behind the motor. If you know there is a 928 944 and 968 that have front wheel drives it is kind of silly!

Second gear on the 718 Spyder goes up to 140 km/h when hitting the red line. So maybe you wish to lose your driving licence ?

@@lensoprezole5322 You're correct. Porsche purposely handicaps the GT4 with long gear ratios in order to keep it from being too competitive with the GT3. This ruins the driving experience of the GT4. That's way the Miata is way more fun to drive than the GT4.

@Jonathan Bowen depending on the type of track, long gear ratios can actually make you slower and makes it harder for a driver to control exactly how they want to deliver the torque.

@Jonathan Bowen all porsches are track cars only if you want to shift at the red line with all the gears. In fact all cars making more than 200 hp. Thats why the miata is the answer for those who wants to use their gear lever on the road.
