Porsche 718 GT4 6 Cylinder is back yet is it the best drivers car for the money ?

Great review. No other video showed the underside as well as you did, ie rear diffuser. With the front splitter extending as far forward as it does and the 30 mm less ground clearance over the standard Cayman and no front lift available I wonder if you have had a problem with clearance on driveways and speed bumps?

Bucket seats add a bit of specialness in the GT4 and give extra feel on track, sports seats best for road use and would be my choice for the GTS. Thank you for watching.

Roger, great video as usual. I'm struggling with this notion that the flat four turbo caused the 718 to be "emasculated". The F4 Turbo has so much more usable power, particularly for a daily driver. I agree the sound is "different", but is that really so bad when everything else is better? And on the GT4 F6, what's the point in having a manual transmission if you are above 80 mph before the top of 2nd gear - that tall gearing is a serious issue that needs to be highlighted further IMO. If the GT4 was your "track car", I get it. Otherwise, I'm not so sure.

Another great video. A lovely car. Interested in thoughts of the GT4 vs the 2.5 GTS in PDK form. The GTS hits 62 mph in 4.1 seconds vs 4.3 in the GT4. The GTS has stacks of torque, in excess of the GT4 from much lower down in the rev range over a wider range than the GT4. Arguably as a daily driver a better proposition than the GT4? I guess the difference may be more noticeable on track with the right driver? (Lockdown beard?...Gone past the itchy, scratchy stage?)

Hi Roger, thank you for a very polished video on the GT4 I know it was a while ago, but do you remember how the engine sounded? Have read in quite a few places that the particulate filters has really dulled the engine note compared to the 981 GT4 (which is meant to sounds great in comparison). Cheers!

Both models sound good. 981 GT4 sounds better than the 718 GT4 but only from outside the car, from inside both sound excellent, some owners fit aftermarket exhausts of course but warranties will be affected by this.

Limited availability probably means most of us will have no chance to secure one. At least the new GTS 4.0 is more widely available.

Price differential between the two is interesting. GTS is fully loaded and same engine less the software. Essentially , its the same car minus the front lip and spoiler. As a 981 S owner Im very interested in both cars but, on balance, would go for the 718 GTS 4.0 and buy it with PDK.

highgate14 GTS 4.0 also has a different suspension (softer, higher ride height), and smaller brakes. It is better value for the money than the GT4, and you can add more comfort options (eg. radar cruise, blind spot warning, comfort access). However, the chassis, brakes, aero, wider tires, and extra 200 RPM are what set the GT4 apart. The GT4 would also hold its value better as more exclusive top tier GT car, compared to the GTS 4.0 which is just a 718 GTS with the GT4 engine.

Yes it is for sure, into this price bracket there are no real alternatives. The only possible one might be the Lotus Exige (I owned several Elises/Exiges) but at the moment its powertrain is not up with the rest of the package. Regarding the cost, starting price is pretty attractive, my 718 Spyder in Italy was 96.5k euro. However with a light configuration and delivery cost it rose at 113.5 k euro

Great review. I'm a couple of years away from either one of these or a nicely specced base 992 Carrera. If I go GT4 I will keep my 2015 Lapiz Golf R 3 door manual as daily/winter driver. I've had the Golf from new and have become strangely attached to it but would need to sell it to run a 911 as daily driver, including through a Scottish winter (with appropriate tyres). Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I've never owned a Porsche. Never even driven one. I would be looking to buy new and keep it probably forever. Thanks.

Lovely car for sure and great video Roger, however 2 distracting points for me. The fact so many new owners are scouring the internet for after market exhausts tells a story. Also lovely design but the exposed exhaust box in the rear splitter looks ‘unfinished’. Like the designers just got bored towards the end of the project.

@@RogerBaileyOnCars EU Emissions / particulate filters had people initially scouring, but with every top US exhaust manufacturer putting all of their R&D into this particular car to uncork that 4L beast, it will be a non issue here. If you need a 718 GT4 Sound Check: "New 718 GT4 Fabspeed Exhaust System". Simple center pipe replacement - problem solved (at least in the U.S. - sorry Roger). Not bored - that rear diffuser / exhaust box design is responsible for 50% more downforce than the prior generation. Tuners will eventually figure out how to unleash all of the detuned BHP out of this 4L creating possibly the best driver's car ever built.

Kerun Bindra Did you watch the video link I shared with you on Rogers GTS review? 718 GT4 / Spyder are not about 0-60...it’s about the emotion / connection between man & machine in one of the best, if not THE BEST driver engagement cars today. I previously owned a 718 2.5 Boxster with PDK and sport chrono (torque whenever you needed it)...not even close to what this car delivers in spades around driver engagement & enjoyment. The power is much more linear. Look at a review for the newest 911 Carrera with a manual...they all have the so-called tall gearing. Drive one for a few days - then tell me it matters - if it does...you’ve missed the point of this car.

Well spotted, it seems to be a thing with that 4.0ltr GT4/Spyder engine with a manual box, there's too much torque for the clutch which wont hold in if its dropped in at peak engine torque, some owners have complained about it (complaints reaching deaf ears). I'm told of one car having the clutch replaced at just 10k miles.

As someone who’s always driven turbocharged cars, there’s no way I’m going to get a car with peaky torque AND stupid tall gearing. I can fully appreciate winding an engine out to get the most out of it, so I’m baffled as to why Porsche hamstrings this with massive gearing? If anything, I’ll look for an older ‘18-‘19 718 GTS, happily tune it to ~400/375, pocket the $ difference and have a much more usable, almost certainly faster package.

A NA flat 4 is a great engine. Not sure id characterize it as a sledgehammer. An AMG supercharged motor, now that's a sledgehammer.

Thing that gets me with this car, for all its racing capability and beauty etc, its not quicker than the 4 pot 718 it replaced. A GT4 car, like the GT3 that preceded it , should be at least 3.8 / 0-60. At the £80K+ price point (toy dependent) you are in 911 territory which gives a performance bump. PDK may help this car get it around 4.0 sec mark... but also push up the price tag.

So if Porsche can make a high performance NA 6 that embraces the strictest emission rules, and presumably it will continue to do so for some time, couldn't they adapt it or apply the relevant technology to produce, say, 2.7 and 3.4 litre versions for the less exotic Boxsters and Caymans? Or would that also be perfectly irrational? In the meantime I'm keeping the 981.

great point Stephen, it's possible they may swop all 718's to the six but in the meantime that 981 is king of the exhaust note.

How you compare the new GTS4.0 against GT4

GTS is softer and quieter and nicer on a day to day basis, GT4 feels much harder. They are almost identical in acceleration & engine sound.
