My mother is from Germany. When I was 12 she took me to meet all of our relatives. One day her aunt in Ludwigsburg took us on a bus tour to Strasbourg France. I had never been on a large tour bus. All of a sudden a gulf blue 911 flew by us, pulled over and a tall blonde woman climbed out of the passenger seat. She was our tour guide and her boyfriend was an engineer at Porsche. This has been, hands down my favorite 911. I also began a thing about tall blondes

One of 17 UK Right Hand Drive (M471) Porsche Carrera 2.7 RS Lightweights - Manufactured by Porsche in Stuttgart, West Germany in March 1973 and finished in Light Yellow with factory option: (220) Limited-slip differential. Supplied new in 1973 by AFN, Isleworth to Anthony Bamford of J.C.Bamford Excavators Ltd and first registered in the UK as JCB 123. In 1974, AFN then supplied the car to its second owner- Dessie McCartney of Ireland, who re-registered it as GIA 7200. Purchased for the sole purpose of beating the mighty Ford Motor Company works two-litre BDA Escorts in their heyday, McCartney began to carve out a career in rally driving with GIA 7200. The 1975 Galway International Rally was Dessie’s only outright international win in a Porsche but his multiple, second-place finishes are legendary. If there was to be a ‘Mr Porsche’ in Irish rallying, that title would, without doubt, belong to Dessie McCartney, who’s rally career was the envy of many. GIA 7200 Rally History: 1974 Donegal Rally - 3rd Texaco Rally Manx Rally - 2nd 1975 Galway Rally - 1st Circuit of Ireland - 2nd Donegal Rally - 2nd Lombard RAC - 13th By the end of 1975 the dominant Porsches were beginning to struggle and feel the Ford reaction and it was becoming a simple numbers game in terms of BHP. The trusty 2.7 Carrera RS with 210bhp was showing sign of a power struggle and so it was eventually sold and replaced by a 270bhp 3.0 Carrera RS. In 1976 GIA 7200 was sold to Richard Jackson and re-registered in the UK as SPY 44. Richard competed in national rally events and entered the 1976 and 1977 Mintex Rally. In 1979, the car was sold to Alan Baker, who kept it for ten years, and then sold in 1989 to Richard Allen. In 1993, Richard Jackson was then able to re-purchase SPY 44 and this time he kept it for the next twenty years, until eventually selling it to William Loughran in 2013. William Loughran then commissioned Tech 9 Motorsport Ltd to restore the car, carrying out a meticulous two-year restoration. The restoration gave absolute regard to preservation, with hundreds of hours spent on dressing out rally dents and preserving the factory bodyshell and floor-pan. The car also retains its matching-numbers, type 911/83 engine, number: 6630943, which Tech 9 stripped and rebuilt. They also report that it retains date-matching cylinder heads and cam housings, intake system and fuel injection pump, etc., items which very often become replaced in a competition car.

Back in 1974 when I was 19 years old I was on a touring holiday in Austria in the Tirol region with my girlfriend and I happened to pass a yellow 2.7 RS Porsche same as the featured car parked in a layby, later a mile further on down the road from a campsite I could hear the RS blasting round the local roads and the sound of that flat 6 racing engine was so loud and glorious I've never forgotten it. Later in life I built a business restoring historic race and rally cars and prepared a Ford Escort RS 1600 for a Portugese client who used it to compete against (amongst other cars) a couple of Spanish Porsche RS 2.7 cars in a historic racing series in Portugal, our Escort weighed in at 895 Kg and these RS Porsche's were around 910Kg, I developed our 2 litre Ford BDA engine to the point where we could beat those Porsches which got us a whole lot of protests but we were proved legal, one of the protesting Porsche owners came up to me after my client beat him and said 'my engine was built, tuned and dyno tested by Porsche in Germany and it gave 345 hp and no piece of shit Ford BDA can ever get near that kind of power so the only way your car beat my car is by cheating' and he went on and protested our engine, (found legal), I took it as a compliment at the time, years later I met his team chief mechanic at a race at Estoril and he admitted to me that the car in question wasn't 2.7L but 3 litre all along! The reason why the Escort BDA was so fast was because I built what was in effect a big bore 4 cylinder version of the famous Ford DFR F1 race engine which was fitted with Lucas mechanical injection and limited to 11K rpm, on my own dyno it made well over 300 hp at 10.5K revs along with fantastic torque and great throttle response, happy days!.. @@johnchurch4705 Yes, I went over to Terry's place in Essex once or twice to buy BDA parts off the man, we had some long and interesting conversations about BDA engines and others. He was restoring the mechanical parts of some rare classic cars at the time where the original engines and gearboxes were completely missing and he was creating new items from old photos and drawings, he was designing the casting moulds and having new crankcases and head castings made and so on, I remember him showing me some very nice pistons he had made for one of the projects he had on the go. Terry built all the BD's for Ford back in the halcyon days of Fords success in rallying back in the 70' and 80s, he asked me what the highest maximum revs at peak horsepower I was getting and I told him that it was around 10.6K and over 300 hp from a 2 litre unit which he was quite shocked as he said that the best he had seen from his own engines was below 8K and around 240 hp peak but that figure was probably more suited to off road rallying anyway although tarmac rallying might have been a different matter, happy days..

What a BLAST! Harry, you obviously don't have to be concerned about deer jumping out in front of you in the farm land that you're driving through. Makes for a much faster (and safer!) drive, no doubt. Unlike the farm country in Michigan (USA)! Please keep bringing us these "vintage" cars from my youth! I will never forget driving out west in Wyoming (USA) in 1975, in my 1972 Opel 1900, with my buddy Ron. We were both 20 years old, and I was driving that old 2-door black vinyl topped coupe flat out at about 90 mph, when I saw this dark green speck in my rearview mirror, getting bigger and bigger (and noisier and noisier). A "ducktail" 911 blasted past us at wide open throttle on a perfectly smooth, straight but undulating 2-lane state road. The guy must have been doing over 130 when he passed by us. What a thrill that was! Also, right after he passed by a pronghorn antelope ran across the road in front of us only 40 yards away!

Off the overnight ferry from Le Havre to Southampton early one Sunday morning and less that an hout later I was in the outskirts of Birmingham, seldome under 120mph and not above 140 or so......it was 1975! So interesting to hear the details, which Harry has delved into (nothing wrong with some nerdy!) clearly showing why the car is special, from a thoroughbred stable.

Light weight and (relatively) moderate power allows for a softer suspension and longer suspension travel, resulting in very high USABLE performance! Something that car manufacturers (and way to many customers) seems to have completely forgotten about....

One of my favorite Porsche's. A minimalist masterpiece that captures the purity of the namesake. And you Harry are the fitting proprietor of that wonderful machine because of your knowledge and appreciation of it. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Good G-d, I'm getting old. I remember the release of this car and thought to myself. No way in hell I would drive a moving billboard for Porsche unless they paid me. How wrong I was. Live and learn.

Harry, thank you for this extremely enjjoyable & interesting video on the Porsche 2.7 RS lightweight.....what a legendary car! I have never seen one & am not likely to either, so I have vicariously experienced what it's like to drive this fabulous car through your infornative video. From the way you were enthusing about it & the big smile on your face, I'd say you enjoyed it too! Perhaps I should take up 'farming ' in order to have a chance of buying one!

What a magnificent car. I once heard the sound of the motor being described as akin to the sound of a 44 gallon drum of Nitrous being thrown down a metal staircase. That description stuck with me for over two decades. I remember looking at being offered a lightweight twenty five years ago for AUD$150k and turning it down because I thought it was just too expensive. I couldn't bring myself to do it. Biggest regret of my life. Thank you Harry for highlighting this incredible machine

I'll never forget when you could get a 2.7RS for under $20k in the US in very good condition and I told my dad to buy one because it will go up and he said no waste of money. Same with 300SEL 6.3 when great ones were like $12k, and Testarossa when they were under $50k. I spent all my youth being right but having no money.

It is impressive that an 2.7 N.A engine is making over 200hp in 1973. 3 litre engines were only making around 140hp in the late 80s.. The 2 litre turbo charged engines in the sierra and escort cosworths were only making just over 200..
@paulallen81092 жыл бұрын
"3 litre engines were only making around 140hp in the late 80s.. " *Which* 3 liter engines? Both Volkswagen and Opel sold hot hatches making 140-150hp from 1,8 liter to 2,0 liter straight 4's (16 valve versions which were all the news in the mid-to late 80's). Those were affordable for a lot of people. Mercedes's own 2,8 liter straight 6 used in the Mercedes W123 sedan (280E) produced 185 hp in 1976. BMW's 3,0 liter standard 3,0 liter straight 6 produced 188hp, but the M88 straight 6 used in the M1 supercar and later in the M635CSI coupe produced 286hp. The M1 had debuted in 1977. Porsche is a sportscar/supercar manufacturer and it goes without saying their engines were designed for fast driving. If we look at the rivals from Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati they all had 2,0 liter NA V6's and V8's in the mid 70's (for the Italian displacement tax system for all cars above 2,0 liters) producing 150-170hp. Heck, 6-cylinder Volvos using the PRV V6 first used in 1973 developed around 158hp in its 2,8 liter guise. Peugeot sold their 605 large executive car in 1989 with a 3,0 liter PRV engine developing 167 hp. The thing is that the PRV V6 was never considered anywhere near the best 3,0 liter 6 cylinder engines (or thereabouts in displacement) in the 70's and 80's. So I'm not sure which 3,0 liter 140hp engines you'e referring to? Early turbodiesels? American 6-cylinder engines (which were anemic as they couldn't pass emission regulations with such old designs and basically choked them) ?
@VirtualGuth2 жыл бұрын
It is more impressive for an air-cooled engine. That works out to a bit over 78 bhp/liter. However, ten years earlier Honda was able to achieve 83 bhp/liter with their first production car, the S500. By 1964, the S600 would produce over 92 bhp/liter. What was more notable in the case of the Porsche, was the amount of torque and the flatness of the power band produced, as Harry mentioned. (A night & day story compared to the lack of torque found(?) in the Honda's, lol.)

Harrys spirited drives are so enjoyable to watch. What a fabulous machine, you can feel its eagerness and with the light weight and low gearing 210 bhp is sufficient for an entertaining drive. Steering looks super communicative too moving around in the hands. Great video.
