Porsche has only ever used the letter R as a model designation three times - just twice in the modern era. The Intercooler's Dan Prosser compares the 2011 987 Cayman R with the 2016 991-series 911 R to find out what that letter means in Porsche speak.
The original 911 R of 1967 was the first 911 that Porsche built for racing. It remains one of the most sought-after 911s there is. So did Porsche make a mistake in 2011 when it used the letter R for a slightly more powerful, not very heavily uprated version of the Cayman S? And was the 911 R that followed five years later more deserving of the badge?
Andrew Frankel also discusses the original 1967 911 R and what made it quite so special.
