Why is it necessary to fill the groove in the new inner bearing seal before installing onto spindle (see 6:01 into the video)? What purpose does this serve, as this grease would not appear to ever be able to make it to the bearing? Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

This grease lubricates the seal itself without which the lip of the seal effectively runs dry.

Maxwell Smart If there is noise in the bearing then I would automatically replace it. It is fairy simple to do and bearings are low cost. If the bearing chews up then you are looking at a mess.

A bearing packer is a very nice tool if you have it. For those who don't pack bearings every day, the old grease in the palm trick works beautifully. Now I will only have to wipe my palm clean but you have to clean and properly store a bearing packer.

DrDIY Porsche but dose not fill properly if you do not know what you are doing/first time. If you spin a bearing and have to replace a spindle or hub the cost is much more the getting the right $20 tool. Thank you, been at this for some time and have seen the highs and lows of my own and others DIY FALLOUT. So we must educate people on the CORRECT ways to fix and repair.

A bearing packer may not fill properly if you do not know what you are doing/first time. I have used both methods and prefer to put grease in my palm. I have also experienced both the good and bad of my own DIY efforts but there is often more than one method that can be considered correct. I have a vast collection of special tools but consider a bearing packer to be one that I don't want or need. If it works best for you then I am glad to hear this. I am sure that many others would also like to use a packing tool and the one that you list appears to be a nice packer for those who wish to use one. Thank you for your comments.

DrDIY Porsche its called the difference between the RIGHT WAY and the other ways....... If you went to the dealer and they beat on your Porsche with a china tool would you go back or do it back yard shade tree mechanic style? I am a city fleet mechanic with 40K in my snap on box. I have done more bearings then need be talked about. Mind you we are talking about a $20 bearing packer found at every auto store for a reason. Thank you.
