Awesome stuff. Gives me some insight into what my mechanic had to do when I sent my 912 heads for a rebuild.

Hi Tom, the spacers for the test stand finally turned up, so all going well I should have it running this weekend. Thanks very much.

Real enjoying your channel, very helpful content. It has inspired me to tackle, to my wife's despair, my own outlaw 911 rust bucket barn find restoration. 👍

cool to see this process. 🍿 bummer about that cracked head but oh well.

That air injection system to reduce pollution is to blame. Or maybe I jinxed it there in the beginning?

Amazing work, knowledge and bravery. I would be too afraid of doing anything major involving the heads, and I would send them in to be handled by the pros.

I might end up at the pros too, ha ha. I'm going to take it as far as I can, learn and share. Fingers crossed🤞

Those sodium filled exhaust valves are more expensive than those on a 930. I have a complete ‘68 912 engine except the valve train which I accidentally left when I moved. One of my three ‘81 Ford Escorts had a cracked head. I took it to the huge machine shop in town that did lots of work for the railroad shops. They were too busy so I took to a small shop beside the locomotive dead line. The manager said the crack couldn’t be fixed. I said, “Over at (the other shop) they said you couldn’t do it.” He grabbed it, Studies it and told me to take it to a nearby radiator shop to be welded. I took it back and he machined it. I had my typesetter’s husband install the head. I got another 50,000 mikes out of it.

I'll probably get this crack welded by someone with a more powerful welder than mine. As long as the engine is t treated too badly it shouldn't re-crack. Good story about your heads! Thanks.

Good video, Tom. All of that math..that's required. If you're going to build an engine, you need to take those measurements!

Rebuilding my '65 C engine now and glad I came across this. I have Pellow's videos but he sends his heads out and they magically come back perfect. Question: could several taps be used to weaken the valve guides, obviously being extremely careful not to contact the head? Seems like a lot of fabrication to build that stand (not that I don't think it's cool, but I couldn't make that).
@GarageTimeAutoResto4 жыл бұрын
I think several taps might push the guides tighter into their bores. Not sure though as I've never done it that way. You are probably better off with a piloted reamer to drill straight holes. It's important that the head bores don't get messed up.
@williamgrzesiak45004 жыл бұрын
@@GarageTimeAutoResto As I read your reply, I think I mis-stated my question. When I said "Taps" I meant from a tap & die set. Shave a little more each time. BTW I bought your engine startup kit the other day. Can't wait to use it.

Just wondering what size is your adjustable reamer is and also the ball hone? I am getting ready to rebuild my 1967 912 heads and these videos are awesome! Thanks Rob
@GarageTimeAutoResto2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, I'll have a look at these and get back to you. The adjustable reamer only gets it close. I highly recommend a fixed reamer for the finish pass.

What are the number on the Nuway cutters you used?
@GarageTimeAutoResto4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay, I had to go look. 609 & 212 You will need an extra set of the long cutting blades or switch them back and forth.
@garyholznecht67374 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Would it be better to use three cutters instead so the two so the 70 degree cut (lowest cut) does not touch the valve guide?
@GarageTimeAutoResto4 жыл бұрын
Ahh good question. I think two are enough. When I did the second head off camera I realized that the steel sleeve can be repositioned in the aluminum cutter housing for more clearance. I wasted my time making those loose guides. Hopefully this saves you some time, ha ha.

Cool video... Only one suggestion.. go metric.. for everything...
@GarageTimeAutoResto4 жыл бұрын
I hear you. Metric is better. Unfortunately some of my tools aren't digital and don't read in metric

well it is a metric car.

@@GarageTimeAutoResto yeah buy more tools , a good valve spring compressor would be top of my list after watching your Heath Robinson contraption. It made me wince
@GarageTimeAutoResto4 жыл бұрын
Have you seen the factory tool? Same
@scottlagro15984 жыл бұрын
Why didn't you just buy a valve spring compressor? It would have given touch better access to the valve parts.

What's done is done, I made this 10 years ago and it's modelled after the factory spring compressor.
