A Porsche longhood is a Porsche longhood. Cracks me up to see the Porscheratti complain about the video title and use of words. He is not selling the car or charging admission. Who really cares what the title of the video is, what badge, engine, etc is in the car. Main thing is Patrick liked it enough to buy it and and I’m quite certain is enjoying the drive. 100% Porsche
@86BBUB Жыл бұрын
That's just dumb. WTF is a "longhood" - LOL. It's not what the the title suggests - period, full stop, end of storey. It's a hot rod; not a 912. Cool car? - yes. 912? - no.
@Rennthusiast Жыл бұрын
It came from the factory as a 912. Badging on the deck lid is a 912. Says 912 on the dash…all from the factory. Technically you’re wrong 😄
@86BBUB Жыл бұрын
The only substantive difference between a 911 and a 912 is the engine. Once you put a 911 engine in a 912 you have (for all practical purposes) a 911. A better title would be "Porsche 911: Here's Why You Should Want One". 🙂 In any case cool car - and I do like your channel. 👍@@Rennthusiast

Hi Will, A true 912 has a different drive experiance than this 911 conversion. I have 2 1966 4 cylinder "big bore" 1720cc motors. 105HP. They are lighter by maybe 150 pounds in the butt of the car and they do handle different. If you want a "true" 912 experience you should review a real 912. 😁Operators are standing by.

James just got one and I think he's picking it up on the west coast during Luft. That may be a better candidate to feature. SWB 4 cylinder car. No hate for this beautiful '69 911 though. Just wish it were an actual 912.

The "Big Bore" kit made a big difference? From 95 hp to 100 hp? The real difference a 912 can out perform a 911T is the lower weight of the engine. Having said that, as a 912 owner, the car is a blast to drive. No it is not a 911S or a 930, but it is a fun driver. I drove mine just about daily until I moved overseas. I still own it after 37 years. Other sports cars have come and gone. The 912 is worth keeping. If that does not make a point, I don't know what does.

Beware a 912 can easily cost more to maintain than a 911. The engine is somewhat overstressed and the lifespan is fairly short on the second rebuild. In hot weather the engine simply runs too hot. When rebuilding the engine it is not uncommon to have to replace EVERYTHING. The case, the crank, the cylinders, the cam, and the heads. You can rebuild these engines once, but not twice. According to the four cylinder guru Harry Pellow, these engines need rebuilds before 70k creeps up on the odometer. I used to work on these cars professionally and he was not wrong. The 911 is a more robust engine with a much better cooling and oiling system. I like the handling of the 912 which has fantastic steering feel and does not seem subject to the snap oversteer of the early 911's, which quite frankly scares me. However the 911 is a better bet for the long term owner when considering cost of ownership.
@josephlin7556 Жыл бұрын
If it does not have a 616 4 cylinder motor in the back, it is not a 912. and the owner wants to replace the 901 transmission with a 915? even the 2.2s have dogleg transmissions... bottom line, this is not a 912, if its not a 4 cylinder+ dogleg 5 speed or a 4 speed than its a complete different driving experience.

Not a single mention of the weight distribution, which is the main appeal of the 912? The weight distribution is better in the 912 than in the 911 - it's something like 45:55, whereas the 911 is closer to 40:60, and with the weight higher up. The 912 handles significantly better at the limit.

Finding a rust free 912 is the hard part. I looked at one 40 years ago and even then in New England, having been driven through the winters, when I looked at it, it was really ready for the crusher. I suppose that's part of why these things are so expensive these days. Even with the 4 cyl VW-like engine, survivors are a low percentage of what was produced. This one was from Texas. I guess trips to Texas or Arizona might find good ones but how many exist there in the land of Pick Up trucks?

Will, you're very enthusiastic & do great videos. you've covered a lot of cars in detail, each a fine case analysis. as a somewhat new, non-expert (but becoming one quickly) you've helped new entrants to Porschedom considerably (esp the visits to expert shops). one of the big problems in recent decades in the broader Porsche enthusiast community is the degree of misinformation / misunderstanding that gets bandied-about. almost all is innocent misdirection or ignorance... not malign. but some is - as mkt values have shot through the roof. longtime owners (& we're in 2nd & 3rd generation in cases) find imprecise or incomplete information to be poison for the community. it isn't just "I know more!", it's also "let's get things factually right so no one else gets screwed like I did..." or just, "be careful drawing conclusions based upon partial, surface "facts". as I watched your channel grow, I expected you'd get to older models someday & I am not at all surprised about this fairly innocuous insensitivity referencing the 912. consider it a learning experience for everyone. & if you ever get into 356s, be prepared for a subculture unlike any other - almost all positive & upbeat, but demanding in a QC kinda way. cheers, @@Rennthusiast
