Nice video. I know it's a bit late but I always found it a good idea to clean the whole engine gearbox unit really well before you start to take it apart. That way it is easier to find all the bolts. Your video will also help hugely when you come to put it back together. Just check all your tolerances, replace anything you are not sure about (it is cheaper in the long run) and really clean everything inside and out. Putting it back together is a really enjoyable thing to do. Good luck. Tony Hillyard

Fair play to you for attempting such a massive undertaking, considering your inexperience in this motor. I have to add, I wouldn't have the guts or ability to disassemble such an engine, even if it was scrap, let alone reassemble it. Enjoyed watching someone taking on the job and look forward to the following videos.

I'm certain there will be mistakes along the way, I've already made a few and had to change directions. I figure if you take it slow and make sure you know what you're doing every step of the way, you can do it.

One should never try to remove the oil pump until all of the case bolts have been loosened and removed. That will take all the stress from the case and the pump, and the pump will come right out when one pulls on it.

Cam is obviously worn out. I tore down my 73 2.0 and found the same looking cam. I got a Web cam compatible with 914 fuel injection. More power

Stay tuned! I've got a new cam I'll be installing when it comes to reassembly. I think I went with a webcam 142 if I recall.

I rebuild my 1.8 last winter. Upgraded to 1911cc. Didn’t run yet hoping the L jet will work…

I hear ya. I'm crossing my fingers hoping I don't have much trouble when it comes to tuning the L Jet. I don't know crap about that stuff yet. 😅

Bosch makes an L-JETRONIC manual that is very helpful. Too inspect yours make sure the flap swings freely without sticking. They will get warped it the engine backfires then It can get stuck in different positions. I had one stick on top of Pikes Peak and had a hard time starting. Didn't realize what had happened till I got back to Michigan. No-one back in 1985 could help me so I bought the bosch technical training manual. I was reading and saw what my problem was and walked out to my car, popped the engine hatch, and hit the top of the L-Jetronic and heard it fall closed and it ran perfect. The twisted L flap can be twisted around so it will swing nicely by using some wooden dowels. I twisted around on mine for years until the pot metal cracked and bought a new one. $330 dollars at the time in the 1990's? Enjoy your videos, I may get my old car out again and do the same. Parked mine when my family was young and needed other things. 1975 1.8

I think I got mine off of ebay. Pretty cheap, I think EMPI makes them: www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1311&_nkw=vw+engine+case+splitter
