Many states have outlawed butyl for professional glass installers, so if you want to replace the windshield on your classic Porsche the way it was done at the factory, you may have to do it yourself. It isn't difficult. You just need a helper, some butyl tape, the right clips and trim pieces. Watch this video and see...

Thanks, Randy. Good luck with it! Try to use the OEM Porsche clips...the other ones tend to break when you put the trim in.

I just replaced mine a few months ago, seeing this video would have been helpful. Definitely order spare clips, I’m glad I did! I had a reputable glass shop install mine, I assisted them with the install of the molding and the clips. Using a socket of sorts is a tremendous help to seat the clips! I used urethane on mine, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that it doesn’t crack!

Hi Ian, great video once again. I worked on a few movie sets back in the day and we used to go to auto glass shops to buy that butyl stuff. We used it to stick all sorts of things for set dressing. Being a movie guy, you probably know this! Years ago when I purchased my 914 project, It came home on a flat bed and realized that one of the corner trim from the windshield was missing when it got home. It probably flew off on the highway. My plan is to get the rubber gasket for that old school Cal look!

Ha. Yep! Butyl is like a swiss army knife. Your story about the trim coming off is yet another reason why 914s shouldn't be towed butt first.

Nothing wrong with using silicone based windshield sealant. Worked great on my 914 and no cracking

It's definitely a stronger bond. But the lack of flex has caused cracking for some. Great that it works for you!

Ian, Could you do a video on the rear chrome trim across the targa top on the porsche 914, 3 clips and I cant figure how to get it to go on?? Any way I appreciate all you do and thanks.

Trying to remember what I did. Pretty sure I put the clips on the bar first, then lined it up with the pinch weld and used a rubber mallet to seat everything.

Was your windshield factory glass? I'm in the market and I'm not sure where to buy a good fitting windshield. My factory glass was damaged after removal. Thanks for the help
@IanKarr

This is a replacement. Your local Porsche dealer can still get 914 windshields. And you can sometimes find them on ebay or 914world. I couldn't wait for mine, so I called safelite and they hooked me up with a classic windshield guy who was local. Fits great.

I just replaced the windshield in my 74 with the factory glass. The main difference is the factory glass has no tint along the top, it’s all clear, the aftermarket glass has a green tint at the top as seen in his video.

The chrome trim on mine is coming loose on the top near that center clip. Trying to decide whether to remove and reinstall (without bending anything?!?!) or find an alternate way to hold it down up there. Thoughts?
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 7 күн бұрын
Best to get some butyl (sold as 3M strip caulk) and use it to tack down. It may just popped out of the clip so you could also try snapping it back in by rapping it with the soft side of your fist

Great video. I need to change my windshield but have been too chicken. You make it look easy. 914 Rubber has a windshield to dash seal they say can be installed without removing the windshield. Have always heard had to remove the windshield or the whole dash. Are you familiar with this?
@IanKarr
@IanKarr Жыл бұрын
Yes. Their seal is made so it's possible to install with the glass in.

Did u have any issues with any 'ugly' showing thru the glass, that the trim didnt hide? any tips on that? ...and where is your vin plate??? What did your glass cost? Did they offer clear and the optional greenish tint? The modern tint at the top makes me want one...
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 2 жыл бұрын
No issues with anything ugly. The fact that the car is black helped. On my yellow car, I just made sure to cover the channel in the black butyl primer. Unfortunately the A pillar vin plate was lost when the PO prepped for paint. Still looking for it. Thankfully the fender stamp is still there :). Glass cost about 300. It was hard to find, so no options available.

Hi Ian, thanks for the great video. Hey, it's not clear to me how the rubber spacers are set before you put the glass in. I'm assuming they rest on the bottom with the glass above them, i.e., obviously not under the glass itself?
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 7 ай бұрын
Hi Kevin. Yes, they're meant to keep the bottom edge of the glass from resting directly on the frame. I ended up removing the spacers after the glass was in and set against the butyl to make installing the trim easier. With the spacers in, the trim bulged up a bit.

Do you know the measure of the correct location of the rearview mirror on the windshield?
@IanKarr

I believe the top of the block should be 3.5 inches from the lower edge of the aluminum trim. Centered.

Ian - I don't see the VIN plate on the driver's side A-pillar in your video. Can you tell me how it is held in? I just went to have the VIN inspected on my car prior to licensing, and the previous owner replaced the windshield. There is a black edging about 3/4" wide on the inside of the glass that now covers the VIN plate. The inspector said that the windshield VIN plate must be visible as it is the only one visible from the outside of the car. I'm thinking about grabbing the VIN plate with a pair of needle nose pliers and pulling it out enough to be visible - about 1/2". But, I don't want to screw anything up. My other idea was to remove the interior A-pillar trim to see if I can slide the VIN plate out a bit that way. Is the VIN plate just jammed between the glass and the A-pillar? What holds the VIN plate in place? I really hope to not have to remove the windshield over this issue. Great video (as always)! Thanks - FRUNKenstein
@jeffwagoner8437
@jeffwagoner8437 2 жыл бұрын
Ian - no worries as I was able to remove the A-pillar trim, pull back the VIN plate (held on with 2 rivets) and scrape away black edging (paint) that was in front of the VIN plate.

Great! what state are you in?

@@IanKarr Hi Ian - I live in Overland Park, Kansas. Anytime an out-of-state title is presented for registration in Kansas, it requires a VIN inspection by the Kansas Highway Patrol. When I went for the inspection 2 days ago, the inspector just loved the car and was very apologetic about the problem. In fact, I think he was more upset about the problem than I was! When I came back the next day, he remembered the car immediately and the re-inspection was a breeze. However, it is a cautionary tale to anyone removing and replacing the windshield - that A-pillar VIN plate is very important and must remain visible after the windshield is installed. Thank you again for all of the great videos and your help over on 914World. And I love your Ravenna Green car! My favorite color.

Carefully :). If it’s an old windshield held in with butyl, leave the car in the sun for a while then use a piano wire or guitar pushed in the butyl between the glass and the frame to work your way arouns
