I love Porsche as much as the next guy, but "Bomb proof" is quite an exaggeration. Talk to 996 or 997.1 owners and they'll tell you exactly how "bomb proof" those IMS bearings are (or 928 owners for that matter). Not to mention the fact that, up until the 997.2, their interior build quality has been terrible. They're not bad for exotics, but they're no LS or SBC in terms of simplicity.

Porsche knows how to dial their shit in, that's for sure. Also, when the specs were listed at the beginning of the vid for both the 918 and 720S the 918 was listed incorrectly. It's not a twin turbo V8. It's a naturally aspirated V8 with 608 hp at 8600 rpm plus the electric motors for a total of 887 hp. Anyway, what a machine, love it.

Matthew Stampp - in the super car world, the 918 is yesterday’s newspaper, as even the lowly 630 hp Performante beat its time on the Ring. Furthermore, he shouldn’t have talked it up so much, as though he was going to beat it! Yes, the grip levels etc. were against the 720S, but hey, that is the bet that he made. Nobody put a gun to his head on this one. I believe that there is a drag term that is wholly appropriate here ‘run what you brung’ 😉

The order was never really broken. The 918 has a higher power to weight ratio and a much higher torque to weight ratio, this means it's faster even in a rolling race (assuming it's running on full power). It's only the laws of nature. But for me i always prefer the rwd car for many reasons.

This video really reminded me how dayum good that 918 STILL is, car came out in 2013..... long before the ludicrous mode obsession and long before people thought mclaren would bring out a cheaper car that was (apparenlty) faster than their holy grail car. 918 has better tech and interior than both its then holy trinity rivals, out launched them at all the traffic light Grand Prix's. where most of these cars do most of their "flexing". i feel like this entire comment section just wants to gush over the 720 and the P100 and no one is appreciating how fricken fast that 5 year old beetle is. so the 918 beat a car that did 0-60 in 5.1sec... don't get me wrong, the 918 is one of my fav cars and would take it over the 720s any day, but you got to be more realistic here instead of being a fan boy. look at the times and you will really see that the 720s deserves high praises especially in that condition. it may have lost, but on a proper day, the 720s may just keep up and may as well starting reeling in the 918.

although they cross the 1/2 mile at the same speed (near as makes no difference) the 720s is gaining speed faster. Look at the times. 140 @ 1/4 mile and 169 @ 1/2 mile = 29km/h over the second quarter. 136@ 1/4 mile and 168@ 1/2 mile = 32km/h over the second quarter. This explains why the 720s wins at rolling drag races, but loses here (traction issues). It accelerates faster at higher speeds. I do believe on a good surface with ideal starts the 918 still wins (awd 4thewin) but it would be a lot closer than represented here.

KingKrusty Well, if you check on McLaren's website, there are three options offered as part of the 720s configuration. The regular 720s, 720s Luxury, and 720s performance. I don't think an increase in power is offered for the "performance" version. But, I think the configuration would (at least) offer some weight-savings (which may result in slighly better performance). Brooks 720s has the leather interior (as opposed to Alcantara/leather). And it also has the "body color" side mirror casings, rather than carbon fiber. So, it doesn't appear to be the performance version.

Mad respect to 918 owner ....most 918 owners drive it from house to car show back to home but these cars were built to race and be driven.... thankfully this 918 owner actually uses his 1mil dollar car 10k miles and hundreds of launch's and for that reason he is awesome or stupid rich....lol.....but honestly without guys like him we would not get to see race's against the 918...so thank you.

What kind of surface is this track when there is 0 grip, i am curious what tires McLaren using 100% normal P zero not Trofeo R or Corsa coz car is Luxury pack. Not best set up for drag race.

the 720s is actually faster, someone did a 2.3 from 0-100kmph in it. while he only changed the tires. (and not some weird drag racing tires)
