I think you are doing the right thing with the bearings. You are there already and now you will know all is fine with them. If you go to sell the car, then you can get more for it due to the work you did. It's like new socks on clean feet.

I wouldn’t worry about those bearings, they look just fine for the cars age. Put it back together with new seals, do a couple of oilflushes and she’ll be ready to rip. 👍

No shimming required to adjust the valve clearance… The tappets have a wedge screw in them. A simple allen key is the only tool required This quite easy to do. In the 80s I had a 81 924… I maintained it all by myself…

When you reattach the flywheel make sure you get the orientation correct otherwise the timing marks will be in the wrong place. Normally valves are adjusted with an Allen key and feeler gauges. Standard spec engine does use shims.

I have a hunch the engine may have been inactive for a period of time with old oil in it. Oil becomes acidic with use and the bearing discolouration might be down to that, this is why oil should be changed before an engine engine is laid up. I’m on the fence here I usually follow the mantra ‘if it ain't broke don’t fix it’ but if you’re already in there staring at an old bearing why not replace it for peace of mind? Shell bearings are so easy.

Think you are right... I normally change is little as possible, repair rather then replace.. but the amount of work needed of bearing fails is just a risk I wont take this time... :)

Those bearings look fine, just mildly oxidized from condensation. The cam followers are not shimmed, they are adjustable.

There is a method for changing bearings without removing the crankshaft.. This is more or less standard procedure for trucks and other heavy machinery, when only main and conrod bearings need to be changed. Its quite straight forward and safe.

True. Just drop pan, open caps and change bearings. Crank will rest on oil seals

If you are not gonna disassemble the entire engime but still want the inside cleaned you could use some cheap oil and add about 1/4L of ATF to the engine oil. ATF is close to a 5W30 oil when considering viscocity but more important it is jamn packed full of dopes that clean and suspend any dirt, this way the dirt will be caught by the oil filter. I have succesfully used this trick to revive hydraulic cam tappets. Eventually the inside of the engine will be clean inside. The ATF also has dopes that will keep oil seals supple so they seal better.

You're better off changing the bearings, you don't want to find the Bearing Sea in your oil pan (I stole this from I Do Cars). It's always the same, I want to restore my old BMW, it's a 99 R 1150 GS with 100000 km and I'm also agonising over the bearings. Some say they're toast after 100k, others say they'll be fine for 500k. You can do pistons, rings, clutch, crankshaft seal, take off the gearbox, trailing arm, all "easy" enough. (not really) But the bike is literally built around the crank shaft, to take that out the entire bike will have to be broken down to it's basic components until absolutely nothing is left.
