Hey Dave, thanks for the precautionary videos. They are warnings for all enthusiasts with enter buttons bigger than their brains that think a non running near 40 year old Euro with multiple previous owners who failed to get it on the road will just need a new battery and air in the tyres. You pay twice for what looks like a cheap car say the experts. Good luck with the journey, I genuinely hope it’s one you will enjoy and stick with. Cheers

No problem. The experts are right! For me tracing back the bodges and figuring how they might have arisen is part of the fun - and then I leave mine for the next owner 😊 thoroughly enjoying this, and the comments here are great too - there’s no doubt I will get it back together and make it move. How nicely is a different question.

Hi David, I got the exact same problem with my 928 Engine. The crankshaft had been ground in 1990 when one of the previous owners got the engine restored. I bought the 928 after it sat in a shed for 25 years so I had to redo the engine. For the rotten cylinder heads I had to buy a second non running engine of which I also used the crankshaft. I tried to source a set of -0.25mm main bearings but wasnt able to besides paying about 50€ per half. It might just be cheaper to get an "original" crankshaft and buy a set of STD Bearings. You will get them for about 140€ I think. You have to watch out for bearing number one though. Porsche changed it in the first one or two years of production. First it was the same like the other bearings (one upper and one lower half) but they changed it to one piece. If you buy the set you will get the newer one. If you got any questions just hit me up. Tilman

I’d be ok with the £140 for big ends, but add the mains to that and it was looking like £600-700. They have some life - we’ll see how much. Feel like I’m building an almost ticking time bomb.

Oh and thanks for offer to help! This journey would be lonesome without the comments.

Max - you know my garage has a unique gravitational pull for tools and workwear that’s left around the house. Keep watching to see more of your tools abused.

Another great episode, really enjoying these Pulling everything apart and starting with everything clean, should pay off in long run, you should have no crud in the oil You'd be pleased to get the put things back together again The 928 will not dissapoint once you get on the road

Glad that you are taking the time to resurrect another transaxles car, but I'm thinking that it is likely to be false economy to not replace all bearings. As a wise person once told me, cheap Porsches are the most expensive, and the corollary is that all Porsches of the same model cost the same. Meaning of course that you can either spend more up front on a good car or less for initial purchase and way more on fixing issues.

I'm certainly not going to get rich from this..and you are right I could have got a running one for not much more. But at least I know what latent defects I now have..mostly. Trouble is if I did the bearings, then I would have to do the big end ones, then those bores would definitely need doing, then a proper job on the heads, then, then..I'm dad dancing round the rabbit hole.

I was shocked to see the blue silicone clogging up the oil galleries. Good you got it all out, even got the wife to help 👍

Enjoying the content.....keep things super clean, and do it once and do it right, with no regrets.....that's the only way IMHO.

Hi David , enjoying the channel did you have to change the nuts and washers to torque down the cradle or was it ok to torque with existing ? nuts ?
@DavidJohnson-nh9io Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I used the existing ones; they didn’t look like stretch bolts and torqued OK - I guess time will tell if this is another false economy.

It's horrible doing these things on a tight budget, but needs must, I'm the same.

The trick is balancing economy with false economy- not something I’m terribly good at.
