Porsche 928GTS or a entry level 911 ?

Surely the ultimate Porsche 928GTS is worth more than an entry-level 911 ?

I've owned exactly that car, a white GTS. Mine was a manual, no leather interior, en left hand drive, I'm Dutch. I LOVED it. It's bulletproof and so well made. I traded it after a few years for a black 964 turbo. What a great time I had. I'm broke now, business collapsed, my life crumbled, but it's all good. I'm just as happy being poor. Poverty makes a creative life, and I appreciate it. But your car is awesome!

I suppose this is a valid consideration down under. However, in the US and Europe a good 928 GTS is worth about same as a 964 or 993. You'd be looking at a 997 turbo manual for 928 GTS (automatic) money. And 928 GTS 5 speed manual cars are worth considerably more.

I owned 928 since 1985.It has 47000 miles on it.(I bought brand new 928 in US when l was a student in boston.now its in Korea for 27 years.I have some other cars with lot more horses but still l pick 928 key when l feel great. Believe it or not 928 gets more attention than newest Lambo or Ferrari in S.Korea.only 3 legal 928s in Korea with plate number. So obviously it's hey look at me car than thousands of Lambos and Ferraries.Bravo 928!

The 911 is the poor man's 928. Sorry - I gotta call balls and strikes. the 928 was European "Car" of the Year 1979. No other sports car including the 911 has ever won "Car" of the year. The 928 has won 2 production car land speed record at Bonneville (1986 and 2020) - the 911 has exactly won none. Even 911 enthusiast Magnus Walker has started his 928 collection - its Now or Never for the 928 still the biggest Bang for the Buck in classic Porsches. Singer/RWB/RUF could easily reimagine 928s - its just a matter of time before someone specializes in customizing and outlawing 928s - There is no substitute. The 911 Killer's time has come!

If you take away the pop-up headlights 928 GTS could be a car out of production line today. The design is SO timeless. Only the 993 is better looking Porsche, in my opinion.

I own a 1992 GTS in amazon green since 2003. It is a great car, with a design that just doesn't age. In fact, I have been asked many times if it is a new car and people can't believe that it's 30 years old. A good maintained 928 is reliable and just a blast to drive. If I had to, I would sell my 911 in a heartbeat, but not my 928 GTS!

Some get a bit starry eyed about the 928 GTS variation, particularly when comparing to S4s and GTs. Digi dash, few more litres, maybe an airbag, some extra HP, low production numbers and last of the model seem to get them excited. Perhaps that's justified to an extent but not sure there is as great a divide between the models as some would suggest, particularly around the driving experience. For mine, the real gem is any one of those 3 variants in the rare 5 speed "dog-leg" manual setup which turns the "point and shoot" driving experience from autos on its head. Preference varies quite a bit for the 928 crowd. For me, the 1980-83 Euro/RoW S cars with either the 5-speed or the 3-speed auto (yes, not the 4-speed) are the most fun to drive. CIS 300hp engine, lowest weight, best sounding and looking. The latter is subjective, of course. These are also the closest to Porsche's original vision and hopes for the car upon release in 1978. The late stage prototypes called for a 5.0 300hp engine with CIS. Say what you may about the purity of the original base car and it's design, but it was not good enough under the hood and Porsche never would have willingly released a 4.5 240hp model if the fuel crisis wasn't going on.

interestingly mine, both the white one and black one have really had no problems .. compared for instance to a audi ur quattro i had recently that was always broken

You have a car with a soul and it will (should) never be worth less than what you paid for it. That said...get on RENNLIST and join the forums. Download a copy of the workshop manuals and get to work. They're not that hard to work on (I own 3 two S3's 85 and an 86.5 and an 83). Those are BELLY PANS and you're lucky you have them. Many mechanics "forget" to re-install them. The main thing you need to worry about is the TB/WP and, typically, the shocks are gone and you won't know what the car should run like without new shocks. Other than that drive the piss out of it...:) Following.

He was 100% right. I'm a "Koni Red" man myself...but OEM is what I'd use on that car too.

All of these cars are very special and may the force be with anyone keeping these running. I'm doing a tired Carrera 3.2 engine myself and while time consuming, it's not too bad IMO (albeit expensive). VW beetle technology is the most talked about criticism, but that old tech does make it very easy to drop and service the engine. I'm not sure if the 928 would be beyond my capabilities, but with the enthusiasts documenting their work it paves the way for those after.

928 are very complicated - every time i think i will start working on it myself, I mostly end up giving up - buy every so often you actually fix something it is very satisfying!

I just feel blessed to live in Dallas. Between other owners on rennlist giving each other advice and 928srus being located here and around 2 dozen owners showing up to the monthly breakfasts there is a LOT of support if you own a 928 in the Dallas area. Makes a HUGE difference. 928 is an awesome car even 40 years later.

Having owned both, yes, GTS is a better car than the S4, but not to the extent that you advertise. For the money, I would say that the S4 is a better value.

If manual, 928. If auto...go 911. My 2c. Wanted a 928 GTS manual....found a better solution that I'll leave off this thread but there are better options now out there in my opinion if reliability, looks, and even dynamics matter to you.

Yes, I've seen this one on carsales and it presents very well. I'm 'softly' looking at a 928 - and you raised the very question - "what are they worth". The thing that frightens me is the very real wallet raping potential it has in the event of a major failure. My marriage might survive the purchase, but to be met with a 20k transmission failure or something of that ilk might see me out on the street. The internet is awash with stories of repair bills of astronomical proportions and, to be honest...that always gives me a reason to not buy one.

yes, I think you have to remember when these were new they were highly advanced for the time and frighteningly expensive - and therefore you have to assume maintaining them today is not for the faint-hearted - but they are massively over-engineered and bulletproof if you get the right one Porsche 928 are the ultimate example of the cheapest one to buy is probably the one which costs the most upfront

never buy a cheap beaten up 928 it will coast u tons.... always buy a nice clean mint one which will be at lest 35k to 50k area. and gts are more also. and have to maintained them each year than no issues. but it is a rich mans car so rem that.
