Hey everyone. Something that's happened before. A debate started about the correct pronunciation of Porsch/Porsche/Porscha and it started to get a bit heated with people speaking to each other in a way they probably wouldn't do in person. This is meant to be a entertainment video not an exercise in one-upmanship. So if you don't like my German pronunciation in the fake commercial I recorded in the middle, sorry. I do speak German reasonably well but I also know it's still considered pretentious in many English speaking countries to pronounce the word Porsche 'correctly'. So I pitch to the audience and sometimes flatten the last 'e'. The last thing I need is (notably, Americans) correcting or rebuking me. Verstehen? So if you feel like leaving a comment with the intention to start an arguments between strangers, then go watch another channel. Cheers Stu. Einen schönen Tag noch

@@davidwebster5258 Did you notice I did pour some kerosene on that fire with that exact discussion @ 19:02? Very proud of my finest German accent voice-over on the old TV commercial. Yes, that was me doing both voices. And I'd really appreciate some native German speaker critiquing my accent there - is it clear and intelligible? Somebody please leave a comment. Late to your channel, but totally enjoyed it! I inherited a 1983 5spd 944 from my father-in-law, which isn’t a 928, but your description of an enjoyable old-school car resonates with my driving experiences. Yes, a seemingly load of upkeep maintenance, but it’s not a modern car. Keep those lovely 928’s on the road!

Loved the video! I bought my first 928 in 97', a white 79 manual with matching white telephone wheels. Sold it early 2001 and bought an 85' S (auto unfortunately). In 2010, after assurance from my mechanic that "it would love it", I threw my golf clubs into the back and headed across the Nullabor from Perth to Melbourne via the Great Ocean Road. He was right, it did love it........and so did I, even more so. What a drive!!! Whilst in Melbourne, I had a look at a 1990 black 928GT. I wouldn't even rate myself half sensible, so of course I bought it. I freighted it back to Perth on the train, and after a couple of weeks of golf, headed back west in the 85' S. There is only one thing better than driving the GOR in a 928, and that's doing it again in reverse (not literally). The "S" didn't miss a beat during that 7000km plus trip, pure driving joy. I sold the "S" in 2019 after 19 years (like selling a child). The GT is a magnificent car. The manual gearbox allows total engagement with the vehicle, you become it, and it becomes you. There are no plans to sell the GT, how could I? Long live the 928!!!!

Wow. Your road trips make mine look like a short blat around the block to grab some groceries from Aldi. Great to hear from a true long-time landshark afficionado. Congrats on your cars. I presume you'd agree about how much better the 928GT box is than the early 5 speed.

@@inCARnationAustralia Great video! Regarding the 5 speeds. I have owned a 1989 GT and now have a 1979 manual. To me I like the early 5 speed better. It suits the "brute" feel of the car better than the GT 5 speed which I think has "too short" throws. Maybe look into a refurb of your manual and try different oil. They are not fast shifting but great feeling, atleat my -79.

When I bought my 84 928s back in May of 2015 i drove it around San Diego for around an hour in town and on the freeway before I began the 1379 mile trip back to my house in the Dallas Texas area. Since it is an 84 I was playing songs from 1984 the whole way. Lots of fun going full blast at night across the Arizona and new Mexico desert with the song I can't drive 55 at full volume. Long road trip in a newly bought car to me will always be the best way to bond with your car. Saw 928s in Europe when I was stationed in Germany in the mid 80s and always wanted one. Mine is guards red with tan aka champagne interior. Always loved the styling of the s model the best with the subtle black spoilers. As you said beautiful and elegant.

Somehow this popped up on my watch list so I clicked. Totally enjoyed it. will def watch more of your content. I worked at Porsche dealership in the 1990s and we had several 928 in Stock, many sat in basement storage for months, if not years before they sold. The GTS was a weapon, and these came and went in heartbeats. But those S2 S4 models with 3 speed Autos would be there forever. they just fell out of love with the Porshe crowd. We had to constantly charge them up every few months. The 928 always had a special following. Same as the 944 and 968. But when you could buy a 911Sc for 45k we struggled to get 25k for a 928. I still say to this day they had the best GT seats of any car i driven. They seem to have come into their own now 45 years later. Only the Brave buy old 928. Makes for good content.

As an 9 year old in the late 70’s I was smitten by this strange car in my matchbox car catalog . Been smitten ever since, only owned toy versions :) ( a 1:18 white one in my office) The purchase price is not the issue, I fear it would be everything after that point, my fussy self would expect it to be perfect like it was built yesterday . Congrats on living the dream - cheers from Buderim

TR (I'm guessing) I realise you're perfectionists in your business, but you'll just have to accept that there will always be something that needs doing and something that doesn't need doing but annoys you anyway. With that acceptance comes inner peace. Then you'll be ready. I think you should get one. Face it, in a world that's getting more ugly by the day they're only going to get more beautiful over time.

If you are really that keen, I decided what I could afford and bought relatively cheaply. The pundits are right, they can be expensive, but as long as everything is there, you can go a long way with careful refurbishment, time and effort. The result may not win and prizes, but it’s yours. Hi, I am Andreas from Germany and I actually have a 928 S4 1988 running and another one for spare parts. Years ago I had a 1993 GTS but sold that as I accidently bought the S4 at an auction :-) just like you did. Then I felt that the older S4 was more a sports car than the GTS and sold it. Bytheway the GTS took 1 liter oil for 1.000km, so the motor needed a revision which I did not want to invest. Today I also drive the most beautiful Boxster which is a 986 S from 2003. Thank you for your videos… I am so exited how the electric 928 will be finally done. Best regards, Andreas

Thanks Mark, but I can tell you the gearbox is very unlike the one in your 928GT. I'm finding to get the gears to slip in effortlessly I have to double-shuffle down the box, not just rev matching. And yes, that probably was a big old Merc. Not a fan of that style of overtaking. Isn't it funny how so many things you see that would never make it into a modern commercial. Like the massive lockup in the mud. And the dress sense. Socks and sandals!

What a great video, Stu. Thanks for sharing with us. Beautiful cars and a great outcome for the road trip home. On the state of the market and values: Yeah, it is unfortunate but there really are still too many rubbish examples floating around. Most of these are better off being parted out and as the years go on we will be seeing less and less of them. The sooner the better. You will see the odd comment from someone who doesn't know these cars, and they think a decent runner can be had cheap. Oh boy...I've said it before, but a 928 looking and running as it should be is a 50k car minimum. People don't understand that. There is no cheap 928, it's a trap!

Hello Stuart. Thank you for this entertaining video. I own an 84 and 86 928, both 5 speeds, and i must say i enjoy the added 50 hp of the 5L over the 4.7. My only complaint with the manual is having to adjust the clutch. I have done it many times and never failed to hate it. As i hit 65 it is even less enjoyable without a vehicle lift. However my wife and i love to ride in it. She really prefers it. We just test drove a Cayman and we both said, “No Way”. So we are keeping the 928. Thank you for the entertaining overdubs, your German accent is spot on! 😀😀 All the best from the States. Carry on.

Thanks Stan. There seems to be a higher prevalence of 5-speeds in the US compared to Australia, which I didn't expect given how the US loves its automatics. But good for you! I actually love the way the Cayman drives, especially the manual gearbox - so nimble and precise - but it doesn't have the deep voice John Wayne 'swagger' of the 928 does it.

Understood, but there's a reason so many sold were automatics. Not that the automatic is particularly notable, but that the early manual Getrag gearbox isn't very engaging (excuse the pun). It's a bit slow and fussy and you shouldn't punch it through in a hurry. But still good fun.

While you are quite right about the clean sheet of paper design, I have found that an awful lot of components are also used on other vehicles from the time. Hunting for the alternatives can be very rewarding. Twenty years back I took mine on a newly mown hay field, there was still a fair bit of hay that missed the baler. I let a friends daughter drive it round the field. She loved it. Later I was showing the car to petrol head friend. We opened the bonnet to find no engine at all! The fan had hoovered up the hay and stuffed the top of the engine bay completely. I’m very glad it didn’t catch fire but the hay took a lot of removing.

As a lucky kid my dad silently flipped his old vw bug into a brand new ‘73 911T one day and drove into the driveway making that strange noise I was 13 Later we did a lot of driving and I wished I was in this other Porsche The 928’s I got grown and bought one ‘79 manual (no roof) in teal with loud exhaust and the big phone dials Love it and could care less about that flat six bang My daughter drove it at 11yrs old in a parking lot and she was supposed to just bring it to a stop Instead she pulls into a stall between cars and drops the clutch car stops with engine idling in gear First timers OMG 😮 I was proud papa 💯

The Portsea car...great buy. Disagree about sunroofs, they are great, very useable. Any 30plus year old car is likely to need hoses, electrics sorted. My S4 is not expensive to maintain as its always been maintained... they need 600/350lb [best compromise] springs or 1000/650 like mine has. transforms the handling, correctly valved shocks means it rides well too. Presumably there are a few candidates for EV conversion that haven’t had maintenance. What are your criteria if looking for a donor?
@inCARnationAustralia
@inCARnationAustralia Жыл бұрын
Well as you might know I've started the conversion of an old one that was too far gone to ever be considered, previously known as Percy and now known as Basketcase. There are 9 episodes so far on the channel. My cars are too nice and original to consider for EV conversion. The trick would be to find one with good body, not much rust, nice interior but a trashed motor and/or drivetrain. Maybe a car that's had intermingling in the radiator or a snapped cam or broken cam belt. So if I were to do a second conversion I'd start with a better donor car than the one I bought, which needs (and will get) a lot of new standard Porsche parts - brakes, suspension.

Most parts are pretty available, some are really cheap though others are a bit eye watering. Parts for LHD cars are often cheaper as more were built- eg the price of a replacement coolant expansion tank for RHD cars got so expensive that companies started making nice aluminium ones. The LHD version remained cheap to replace.

I'm a fan of Michelin Pilot Sport 4. (I don't think the 5 comes in an appropriate size for me) They seem to be out of stock everywhere in standard size 225/50/16. 16" rims were once considered outrageously large but are hard to get a good range of sporty tyres for. ContisportContact I'd also like but same story - can't find stock anywhere. I recently fitted relatively inexpensive Yokohama Advan Fleva V701 in 225/50/16 to one of the other 928s and I haven't pushed them enough to comment yet, nor driven them in the wet. They seem quiet enough and pretty OK but I doubt they'll be a match for a good Michelin. The PZero Rosso Asimmetrico is undoubtedly good but a bit too expensive. I've also had good experience with some of the better Kumho and Hankook in the past so I'd consider them. Bridgestone RE003 is popular but I doubt I'll go back to them again.

@inCARnationAustralia
@inCARnationAustralia Жыл бұрын
A lot of things will be similar costs, but from my experience with both the 928 would be more expensive. Not hugely, but a bit. Just a bit more of everything with extra complexity. But some of the issues are common to both - the 944 engine being basically one bank of the 928 (although very few parts are interchangeable). You'll still have the same issue with, for example, fire. With perished fuel and power steering lines, etc. Interior refurb cost would be similar, etc

Wheels and steering wheel are easily changed if that's important to you. All I can suggest is get somebody knowledgeable about 928s (not just 911s) to inspect it. It's a buyer's market. Interiors are the hardest thing to fix, so that's a big plus. Good luck

My neighbor who has a few porsches bought a 928 and the engine caught fire in his garage. He asked me to fix it, but honestly I knew nothing about them. I much prefer the look of the 944. I think all porsches are too hard to work on they are not designed well for doing maintenance or repairs. My boxster you need a car lift to do anything to it. My 914 not much better. A FWD car is so much easier to work on.

Beautiful timeless cars. I bought a manual 89 928 S4 from the junkyard a while back thinking I was going to restore it but came across a much better driving example, an 88 S4. The auto transmission was slipping though so ended up using the manual trans from the 89 on it and took some parts off and junked the rest. Always good to have several of these for parts for the best one if you have the space for it... Made a little KZbin short of my 88 here... kzbin.infoYjuvBEcuRz8
