Porsche 944 S2 - Featurette

The Porsche 944 has often been referred to as the "poor man's Porsche", but as the model turns 40 years old it is firmly planted in classic car territory… and therefore it’s time to revisit the model with a new perspective. This video feature's Rocco Santilli's 1991 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet.

I had a '90 S2 coupe for eight years and it had 220k miles on it when I finally sold it. I struggled with the decision to sell it, but back then they weren't particularly desirable and it didn't make any sense to throw a lot of money at it. I often wish I'd held on to it, they're wonderful cars. Everyone goes for the 951 but the truth is that the S2 is really the one to own.

I have owned around x11 4 cyl transaxles....not a 968... they are just a satisfying and pleasure to own and drive. Hate the 911 snobs !! in the 80s us young men saw the 911 as an OLD model in the range !

The term “Poor Man’s Porsche” was a little inaccurate considering the performance you would get with the 944 Turbo and S2

Poor Man’s Porsche didn’t fit the S2 Cab. It’s base price in 1990 was $48k. That was a crap load of scratch in that era

A fun fact about the 944 S2 Cabriolets is that Porsche didn’t actually manufacture them in their final "convertible" state. Fully built S2 Coupes were taken from the Porsche assembly line and sent to a branch of the American Sunroof Company (ASC), not far from Stuttgart, Germany where they were contracted to literally chop off the roofs, lower the windshields by 60mm, and modify the rear body panels to accommodate the new rear deck lids.
