Darryl has done some thoughtful modifications. I would not do ITBs. When we were modifying my 964, we looked into ITBs. Parts & labor for the ITBs & the stand alone engine management system were in the neighborhood of $20K. What might be a bigger bang for the buck would be to change the gear ratios. We rebuilt the transmission and changed 2nd - 5th for around $13K (parts & labor). By removing the overdrive function of 5th (and shortening its overlap with 4th), we were able to shorten the ratios of the other gears. The effect is noticeably perkier acceleration, better torque gear choices for cornering and a significant boost to driver engagement.
@danmeifert2469 Жыл бұрын
Did you look at other intake options like GT 3 plenum which may not be much cheaper. Sounds like changing gear ratios has worked well for you.

Had a chance to drive a 964 Carrera 4 for a bit in 1990, I fell in love with that air cooled flat-6 sound as it rushes through the RPMs. So I'd say loose that loud exhaust and keep the engine stock. 0-60 under 5sec is plenty quick for that old chassis.

Bought my first 964 in 2014, after seeing prices increase through 2013. Since then 4 964’s, 2 996’s (1 of GT3), 1 997, 1 991.2 & 1 Taycan had passed through my garage. Still have the Taycan. In the process of buying a 997.2 and a 993😇

Will! I really look forward and enjoy these owner interviews so much. To hear these owners talk about the pride and joy, cool stories in ownership. You can view Porsche vlogs with all the speed demon GT's with all the numbers and hype, but cant beat this... More owner interviews. Made me laugh at the stereo comment. I been told update to android/apple play, but here again, I never ever turn on the stereo not even air cooled 😁 Great job on the Channel.

My car went through a full engine rebuild at 197k miles bc of a broken head stud. I would look into rennline valve covers and new gaskets then go from there. It may solve your leaks. ITBs are a nice novelty(and I would love to have them) but you can spend the extra 5k+ on something else. I would get new wheels, secondary muffler delete, and fix up the interior a bit. You can also upgrade your evaporator from Griffiths for better ac efficiency.

Thanks as it appears I have one from a Storsek conversion and I did put a Rennsport goldenrod shift-link in. There was a dual exhaust and a few other items and I will do a visual on the flywheel to confirm. Just doesn’t behave well with engine unloading and revs quickly and confident this is the case... Oh if you get the MoMo, get the addtional horn attachment or you won’t have one. Easy job...

Speak of the devil... Right before I clicked this video I saw an ad for Fabspeed's ITBs and those bad boys are NOT cheap. $15,000 to be exact. Probably 100% worth the wallet punch but, lord, that is a big pill to swallow.

I would definitely do the top end of the engine but not sure how far away from stock I would go. Performance mods on the top end would be great but definitely keep the original parts which it sounds like John has done if you do mod it. Obviously focus on reliability mods first and then performance. That would be my priority if it were mine. Beautiful car and I’m thinking I need an air cooled example someday!

I started in Truimphs as well, first a Spitfire and then GT-6+, followed by MGB. The Porsche was a something my wive bought despite telling her “No!” See how that ended as it was put in the corner of the Garage, after a failure for years. I wouldn’t work on it... She wanted to sell it recently and I started working to find why Relay #41 was not getting power. A couple months and the changing of numerous components, I started to like the engineering (except relay #41) and I bought it from her. She made a profit... Well got her running with the last thing checked of course and in the middle of a restore and she is a hoot.

I rarely listen to the stereo in my car unless I am driving a long distance on the interstate. When I'm out having fun, the motor is the music. As far as the mods, do whatever makes you feel good. Make it personal to you. Keeping everything original is overrated unless it is going into a museum.

I had a 92 964 my first new porsche. I have had 4 911's and a 924 and a 924 turbo and a Boxster. The 964 was the most costly to maintain ( drove it 125000 miles. My other 911's I drove 170K miles or more each. They had torsion bars and they are far better. The 964 had way more road noise from the rear wheels and wore out tires rapidly. Any pre 1990 Porsche is a better car.
