Finding a Porsche 964 coupe isn't an easy thing to do in this INSANE market...but I did it. And in this video I'll share why I'm absolutely THRILLED with my 1992 Porsche 911 964 C2 manual in Amazon Green Metallic...and at the same time disappointed (but not really surprised) at the amount of repairs it's going to need.
The Porsche 964 is an elusive generation of air cooled Porsches for many reasons, so I consider myself lucky to have found a manual C2 coupe in a rare color. My 964 is an an amazing color combination: Amazon green metallic exterior on light grey interior and I am more than happy to spend the money the car will require to get it to be a top notch, mechanically sorted driver quality Porsche 911 964 coupe.
Part of what I love about adding a Porsche 964 to the garage is that I'm slowly building my collection of air cooled Porsche 911 coupes. With the addition of this amazon green beast, I can now compare and contrast it with my Porsche 993 and my 86 Porsche 911 Carrera...and share how they stack up to one another on my channel.

Fell in love with Porsche because of a friends Dad's 930 Turbo when I was about 10 years old. The 964 Turbo, the 930 Turbo and the 993 Turbo are my 3 favorites (in that order) of all time.

That is a beautifully spec'd 964! I'd definitely get it fixed before something bad happens, that something bad could be far more expensive.

Good to see you back with a new video. Beautiful car and love the exhaust sound. Regarding the transmission, it seems you have the resources to get it properly sorted. Bite the bullet and get it done IMO. You still have two other awesome air-cooled 911s to enjoy while the transmission gets rebuilt in your 964. Look forward to future comparisons!

Will, I read all the comments before I decided to throw my 2 cents in. I have been following you since your BMW days (owner of a 2002 here) and love your content, I get what your doing with this channel and appreciate you being upfront with costs of vehicles and repairs. This is extremely helpful as I hope to get into an aircooled one day, I'm 58 and time is a wasting. So I agree with doing the trans now so you can enjoy the rest of the summer and early fall with this car. and The amber corners and wiper are spot on correct for a 964 here. Also agree with going back to a stock wheel for this. Your idea of 10-15% of purchase to put it right is spot on as I am dealing with this with an m240i I just purchased, wheels, tires, paint correction fluid changes etc. I hate having it tied up in the shop right away but I also bought it site unseen, from a dealer and relied on pictures. I would rather have it sorted out so I can enjoy it than deal with the nagging feeling every time I looked at it or drove it that it was not what i wanted. Also agree with the exhaust sounding too deep and muscle car like, get that straightened out. Looking forward to more content!

Great video. Watching this as a parallel of what I’m going thru myself. Picked up a supposedly level1 964 around the same time as you from supposedly the top seller, and going through the pain process of sorting it out. It will take me more time, as I’m also having weird noise issues. After spending considerable time & $$$ to get this car I’d want to take care of all the issues and start enjoy driving it worry free. It will take time, parts are difficult to find, and top Porsche specialist are super busy. That is why it will be specially rewarding and satisfying when I get it to the condition I want. Looking forward to ur next vid!

Yes, thinking about going with more raw, unedited video. That said, part of the trap for me is I really enjoy a polished finished product so I put myself in a corner. I procrastinate thinking I really need to invest a lot of time (and then don’t make it a priority) and the channel suffers.

Good to see a new video from you, I would say get it done right! Peace of mind on the road is a priority. You plan to keep this special car for the duration, give it the TLC it deserves so it can give you a rewarding ownership experience. Like you said in your other video, PPI’s aren’t bulletproof, it is unfortunate however that something to this extent was missed, good luck! Look forward to more 964 content, especially comparison videos.

Glad you're back. Your content has been missed. I'd pull it and get it right. Too nice of a 911 to be driving waiting on the trans to fail. And, I would keep the wiper. If I were config a new one, I'd think about it....but it's there now....so I'd keep it.

First, nice to see new content! I will go against the masses on the transmission, unless you are hearing the grinding noise yourself and the noise sounds completely ominous and unusual to you. Otherwise, and unless you know that the transmission fluid had been changed very recently, I would refresh the fluid and then drive the car for a while before again checking and changing the fluid. If what is pictured on your drain plug is the result of the car's first transmission fluid change ever, or in at least quite a while, it's likely not all that scary or unusual (again, unless you hear the grinding yourself or are having trouble shifting or staying in gear). Anyway, congrats and good luck with the purchase : )

What a wonderful colour combination 👌. I have to prefer the clear lenses too but that’s probably due to familiarity as a lot of late 964’s here in the UK (that I saw) have the clear ones and were deemed an upgrade from the amber ones back in the day. I would probably remove the rear wiper too just to clean up the lines. Other than that, the car is sweet and I would definitely get the mechanical issues sorted now so that it’s a headache dealt with. Enjoy the car and I look forward to more posted clips 😊

Congrats. I'm glad you are planning to keep it essentially stock. To that end, I would replace the wheels putting real Cup I's (16 inch for normally aspirated 964's). It is easy to achieve the stance you want with Cup I 16's. Good luck with that transmission job.

Awesome color combo - really stunning! Agreed on the deferred maintenance and believe that it applies to air or water cooled cars. Amber lights look great - thinking of switching mine back over as well. On the trans, it would bother me knowing it was going on - personally, I’d sort it out just for the peace of mind. Look forward to seeing your next videos!

The color combination is actually stunning. Beautiful 964. The exhaust sounds perfect, great stance. Bummer about the transmission. With that many shavings on the drain plug I'd just get it rebuilt. Sucks to have to spend the money but then you know it's new. Also a good time to do a clutch upgrade.

First, congrats again Will! After seeing the news on IG I was definitely anxious to see this vid. Secondly, love the exhaust note. I myself have a primary and secondary delete so it’s loud. Thirdly, in my own experience I purchased a 964 with 195k knowing I would need an engine build. I knew going into a car like this things will need to be replaced or fixed. As you mentioned things will come up. It’s always a conversation of “what’s next “ on these older cars. So regarding your transmission I would consider your mechanics advice and also see other opinions. You mentioned it was serviced at Rothsport. Maybe reach out to them and ask more about the history. Side note...the lightweight flywheel and chip makes the car so much fun to drive. I know you want to keep it stock but at least get a short shift kit 😁
@Rennthusiast
@Rennthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting and thanks for tuning in. Yes, you’re right...always something with these cars. So, I’m not really surprised that it needs work. I am surprised it’s the transmission, though. After speaking to the porsche transmission specialist I learned that the LWF can lead to premature wear due to lacking the rubber to absorb the force that the dual mass flywheel has. When I have the trans out I’ll do the clutch and other associated bits so will need to decide whether to go with LWF or dual mass. I put a SW chip in my 993 and left the DMF in it and still got some pep. Maybe I’ll do the same set up in my 964. Thanks again for the support 🙏🏽

I've been waiting on this video for so long! Thank you for posting it. I love your channel! I would never just drive it until something really bad happens. I would change the transmission if able. But I'm a former 996 owner, so I might be a little more fearful of catastrophic damage than an air-cooled owner. If you're planning on changing the transmission, my vote is to upgrade to the 993 6-speed. It's a bolt-on, from what I've heard.

Congrats on the 964 from another Amazon Green owner! Very special color. I’d get that transmission properly fixed right away. That’s what the magnet on the drain plug is for, to let you know something is up before something major happens. Best of luck with the repair and very interested to watch the journey. Maybe if the transmission gets opened up, throw in some short ratio gears 😁

Shortening 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th by removing the large overlap between 4th and 5th (so that the gears are sequential) makes the car feel markedly more perky. We did 2nd 2.400, 3rd 1.733, 4th 1.333 & 5th 0.960 in my 964 C2.

The exhaust note is sweeeeet! Of course spinning it up in your neighborhood may not make for happy neighbors but it does sound awesome. The only thoughts to it may be if it carries a "drone" into the cab for longer runs at highway speeds. Overall it's a very nice find indeed!

Very nice looking car. I am familiar with the 964 as I have owned one for 20 years. It looks like your wheels were swapped to the 17" cup wheels (original Porsche or clones) and you have the upgraded leather interior. Re: transmission. If you just had some metal shavings, I would be inclined to just change the gearbox oil and then drive it and look at it again in another year, but if the trans is actually making noise, I would have it pulled and repair it. It's going to be expensive but you've already found a nice example, so you're mostly there.

Beautiful spec. Glad to see 964's really getting the respect they deserve over the last few years. Chances are it is a pretty minor issue with the trans that could turn into a much more expensive issue if you allow it to go "boom". I would pull it and sort it out now. When I lived in LA there were a dozen good shops that could do a rebuild fairly quickly and now that I live in Nashville I still have at least 2 shops that I would trust with a job like this. I would shop around a little bit more because you shouldn't have to ship off the trans for a simple rebuild.

Congrats on your purchase. I bought my 964 Targa about 14 years ago. The private seller told me, that he didn't drove the car for several years. I checked the engine and struggled for some time whar to do. After some months I decided to maintain the complete engine. This was the best decision. Since then I had a great time until now. So it was the right decision to put a lot of money and time in repairing it completely, but worth it.

@@Rennthusiast Hi, I bought it from a reputable dealer, a Porsche specialist during the Covid lockdown we had in the UK back in December. I bought it unseen but they sent me a video so I was aware of most of the issues. I just went that but further on the restoration as I intend to use it regularly - it’s been a garage Queen for a while. Prices have rocketed for Porsches here in the last 5 months so I can still sell it and turn a healthy profit if I ever wanted.

Excellent purchase - congratulations! As a 964 owner, I know that the KW variant 3 suspension is a game changer on 964s. What exhaust is that? I don’t think I’ve heard that sound before. Would you please talk a little more about the mod to the steering? I know digging into the gearbox hurts financially; but it’s only going to get worse (and more expensive to fix). I don’t know anyone else who has both a 964 & a 993. Different mechanics I talk with say different things about the two models, I’d really be curious for your thoughts on the driving experience between the two.

I would go ahead and get the transmission sorted. Also, I would have to delete the rear wiper. It makes sense and is functional for rainy areas like the Pacific NW but ruins the silhouette of the car. The last thing I would do is put in the same radio unit that you put in your 993 and maybe a phone mount.

Hi Will, first off what a stunning acquisition. That color is special. So I'm curious, did the PPI miss some important issues or did you just figure you would need to make repairs anyway on a 25 year old car? Regarding the transmission; I would fix it and have it repaired correctly.
@Rennthusiast
@Rennthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes, the PPI missed this noise. This situation provides good food for thought around relying on an unknown (but supposedly reputable) shop for future remote purchases. Had I flown out and driven the car I would have personally heard the sound, there is no doubt. That said, I am OCD about these types of things and have had a couple of friends ride along with me in the car and they said they wouldn’t have heard it. I am going to assume it was an innocent mistake on the part of the shop I hired to do the PPI bc at this point what option do I have, you know what I mean? I really have had a hard time with the fact it wasn’t noted by the shop as something to investigate further. But life is short and I have moved on. This game isn’t cheap and if you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen lol Just another lesson learned, and at the end of the day the car is such a treasure that I would have bought it anyway. Might have tried for a slightly better price but it’s a seller’s market so probably wouldn’t have happened anyway. Thanks for watching!

I tend to agree with you on the exhaust note. It’s a simple cat delete, I believe. I prefer my 993 fister stage 3 muffler but do like that the 964 has a tone that is different from the 993 and the custom set up on my 3.2. Thanks for watching 🙏🏽

Great looking car! Glad to see you back with new content. If it were me I would have the transmission sorted out rather than just driving it and waiting for something to happen. It can drive you crazy and make it difficult to enjoy if you think something could fail at any moment.

Since the shavings are stuck on the magnetic drain plug, there’s a good chance you have a worn bearing (needle bearing) a little early for transmission problems, if you intend of driving the car have the tranny fixed, at same time check out the engine for leaks or upcoming leaks, if your not………….😉 add an other page to your daily planer. Beautiful... speechless. As with all Porsche's with age, its a money pit of sorts to bring it to our level Will. The money spent will come back to you if you intend on keeping this gem. Filings in the oil is a bad thing, but not unrepairable. This baby has a lot going for it. I would do the repairs hopefully minor, as funds become available, Charles is your man. They are hard to come by... One of every year, ambitious, enjoy..

I had that same car sold in early 2013 for $22,000. Car was salvage and 64,000 miles. Everyone is the US refused a salvage 964 so the car went to Europe. I had may be 30 964's before that. The market was crap on the cars before Singer. I've always appreciated a nice 964 but not a crappy one. -------Have the Ring and Pinion looked at, my 92 needed the Locking Diff Rebuilt. You Definitely have some issue. Patrick Motorsports can look at it$$$

Will - great work on the channel. 964 is my fav - the bridge between the old world and the new. Great color. I tend to dig originality - let the car speak its personality - so I love the amber corners and rear wiper. The exhaust does sound really good but seems a little loud for long journeys. Up to you!! Bummer about the gearbox. You could look at it two ways - one, keep driving it until it grenades - Use Up the entire first transmission, so to speak. But I think that’s a false economy - if it grenades, likely more parts will have to be replaced in the rebuild. Beyond that, if you’re like me, it will be in the back of your head potentially keeping you from enjoying the car on those perfect sunny days. Time is the asset. You have your other 911s to enjoy this summer. Get er fixed then let er rip next year - it will feel that much better! And if you get right on it, maybe you’ll have it back in time for some nice late summer/early Fall drives!

Hi Jeff. Thanks for commenting. The transmission repair is not a matter of IF but WHEN, but what you’re alluding to is what’s bothering me the most...the downtime. You hate to lose access to the new toy right after you buy it, you know what I mean? Overall, bad luck given all the due diligence I did on the car but this 964 is an absolute treasure so it will be totally worth the money and pain in terms of the joy it will bring. Thanks for watching and hope you’ll stay tuned!

@@Rennthusiast 100%. I would imagine the disappoint is magnified when you’re trying to get more content for the channel! Anything can be fixed with enough $$$$$ applied, so if you’re down for the potential catastrophic failure and tow on the car’s schedule rather than your own, at the end of the day it’s your car and I’m sure you’ll do what needs to be done! Maybe you’ll get lucky and it’ll last through the season. Fingers crossed. Congrats on the expanding collection. Enjoy and take care!

Hey, thanks for the feedback. I usually have a mic with a wind reducer (can’t remember what it’s called) on me when doing that style of vid which cleans it up quite a bit. In this case I was rushed so used the iPhone mic. No doubt, not as good. Already planning my next vid so will be sure to hook up a better audio situation.

I agree that your new (to you) 964 is beautiful. I suggest taking care of the issue now as opposed to waiting for it to get worse. I’m a firm believer that a car like that should be free of a transmission problem.

Beautiful 964 my favorite Porsche. Fix all that is wrong with it now if it’s a keeper. Then go out and enjoy it. They are sooo fun to drive and never gets boring. Nice buy!!! True always put a set amount after buying one of these 964s and truly have the car looked over carefully. The great thing is there’s no loss on these cars the value on them are high so it’s like an investment, in my opinion they are worth every bit of money put into them. Enjoy 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Great looking 964 , shame about the transmission. The problem is that its a transaxle and you gamble on which part is breaking up or wearing! if its the diff {I had the planetary gears break up in one and the rest of the box wasn't pretty!!!] then they are larger gears and meaning larger fragments breaking off and then free to smash up the smaller gears, which incidentally cost a fortune each! so your gamble! If it were me I'd have the gearbox rebuilt and have limited slip diff added while your in there. This will improve the drivability and grip of the car no end. Good luck and hope not to many gears are damaged once you get in there.

Thank you. The car has LSD and one of the mechanics who looked at the car felt like perhaps the issue lies with the differential. I’m gonna have the trans dropped and sent out ASAP. Thanks.

As an 964 owner for the past 20 years, don’t wait for it to break. I tracked my car then turned into a full blown race car. I broke one of my shifter rods and rebuilt my transmission. I upgraded to steel synchros (all gears). My car is now a street car and I could drive it every day. Good luck and enjoy the ride
