I’ve been looking seriously at this car. I own a 981 Boxster S and while it’s a bullet proof car and fantastic to drive I want more torque and a little more panache at Carreras and Coffee haha. I’ve owned the S almost three trouble free years and I’d highly recommend it to someone who is looking for an entry level Porsche as mine was less than $45,000 and came loaded with options. Lower mileage examples in condition 2 can be had for around $50,000 US. Here’s something I don’t see KZbinrs telling people about the 981. It was built on the same assembly line as the 911. (New 718’s are as well). Half the 981 literally is 911. Engine, trans, interior, front suspension, brakes, wheels , electronics are all the same. This is imo, is the best sports car enthusiast value there is bar none. The car reeks of quality and is extremely fun to drive and incredibly practical. It keeps its value unlike Corvettes and many other cars. It’s a cut above on the street. People notice this car and compliment constantly.

I am massively enthusiastic about my Spyder and have noticed it’s unappreciated to some degree in the Porsche community. It seems people are, first of all, fixated on the 911…which I think detracts from the appreciation of the Boxster platform in general…except for within the Boxster community. We all know and LOVE this mid engine platform. I recently got a 992 Carrera T and before I bought it I owned a 981 GT4 alongside a 981 Spyder. Due to financial and storage reality I had to sell one of the 981’s to make room for the T…and I chose to sell the GT4 to keep the Spyder. If that doesn’t speak volumes then I don’t know what does. The 981 GT4 is a GREAT car but for me the Spyder just checked a few more boxes for the way I use my cars. I street them, don’t track them. The Spyder has the same KILLER motor and trans as the GT4 in a little bit of what I’ll call a softer package. Torque is great and the sport exhaust with the top off (and even with the top on) is perhaps one of the best sounds I’ve ever heard come out of a car and into the cabin. My particular example has the LWB’s which makes it stand out a bit more too. So, whenever someone comments on my channel or other social media and says there are considering a 981 Spyder I always say GO FOR IT! A gentleman reached out to me recently telling me he was going to buy a 981 GT4 and I suggested he go try a Spyder before he pulled the trigger, which he did. Long story short, he messaged me telling me he just bought the Spyder instead of the GT4, is supremely happy and can’t stop driving the car. Thanks for watching!

The Spyders are some of the best sports cars Porsche has ever made. With Mid engine balance, top down exposure to elements of machine and nature, and manual transmissions, it is a special Porsche experience that anyone who loves Porsche should enjoy. They are all great. I have a 718 Spyder and and have owned many 911s, which are all fantastic in their own way. But the Spyder will never go.

As an original owner of a 981 Spyder the comments in this video resonates just like the exhaust sound you mention! 😀. I’ve always been amazed that this is actually an OEM exhaust it’s that amazing. Like you, I have no desire to mod the car. It’s perfect as is. The main reason I choose to drive my 993 over the 981 most days is the traffic is so congested in Orlando. I can have more fun at slower speeds in the 993. I own a vacation property in the mountains of NC. There is no garage, so as soon as I find an indoor storage facility I will move the Spyder to NC. I sometimes regret spec’ing 18 ways over buckets, but the heated seats sway the balance in favor of sofa seats, especially if I’m going to use it in chilly mountain mornings!

My summary when asked about my 981 Spyder is: "It makes me feel like a much better driver than I really am." Your comment about the 3-5K range meshes with my experience. I describe 4K rpm as being the "Jekyll-Hyde" transition; below 4K it's a well-behaved, classy cruiser, above 4K it becomes a snarling beast with impressive torque. Gears are very long (redline in 2nd is over 80 mph) but you'll either adapt to that or you won't. Last summer did a 2K mile road trip. Plenty of storage for two people and cabin noise wasn't oppressive with top up. Enjoyed it immensely. As for the styling, there's only one thing you need to say: The HUMPS!!!! If you're a track guy/gal, GT4 is better. If you're not (like me), Spyder more enjoyable. My suggestion regarding LWB: Essential to try them out before you buy. I'm 6'5" and just don't fit in LWB (my upper back/shoulders are the main issue). Mine has 18-way sofas and they're fantastic. Mine is also Guards Red and I had the seat centers redone in red/white/black houndstooth (similar to the blue GT4 shown in the video) and they really pop. Only performance mod I've done is swapped out OEM headers for CarGraphic street headers (had them from a previous 981 BGTS and, surprisingly to me at least, the 3.4 and 3.8 engines use the same exhaust headers). Exhaust sound 'more better.' LOL Wonderful cars; glad you're enjoying yours!

I got one of these last year, and I can't believe how much I love this car. My favorite of all that I have owned and CONSTANTLY get compliments on how beautiful this car is. It hits on all visceral levels. Sounds so much better than a 718 Spyder. The problem is, do you drive it and kill the rare value or make it your daily? SUCH a hard decision to make. I may get a second with higher miles so I don't feel guilty driving it all the time because I want to, or get a 981 GT4 as a track car so I can drive it hard and still enjoy the convertible off the track. Can't say enough about this car!! I've listened to your doubts about your previous cars and they make a lot of sense. Still can't turn my back on a manual '18 GT3 4.0 though.

Great review, thanks for that. I have driven a bunch of different modern Porsche (987S, 997S / GT3, 991T, 991 GT3, 992 base , S and 992 GT3, 718T and GTS 4.0 and a couple of others) but am financially limited to own only one and for me it is the 981 Spyder as well. Yes there are more modern and quicker Porsche but the emotions, the raw character and the sound of the 981 Spyder is unmatched. I also drive laps on the Nürburgring from time to time, if you are not chasing the very last second it is doing great. Only car I would trade it in for is a manual 991.2 GT3 but I am concerned I would regret it since I am driving 99% of my time on public roads and the GT3 fun only starts at 6.000rpm...

I drive/ own a 981 Boxster S with the Porsche Sport Exhaust which sound exactly as the Spyder and I can honestly tell you that exhaust note is addictive and makes you feel like a kid all the time. I hardly drive this super fun car ( I know it’s my choice) as with cars like these come extra attention from people which sometimes is not wanted. And I like to drive high in a pick up truck daily anywhere without worrying about hitting those concrete stoppers, door dents, jealous individuals. They car keyed my first 986 Boxster back in 1997 in a parking lot, so NO paranoia here! It’s not a Spyder but I get a lot of compliments specially if they hear the exhaust music. I drive like stole it when I drive it in the mountains and other roads with very rare occasions I take it easy. I am more attached to my 981 because I do a lot of its maintenance myself and this car has been bullet proof for almost 10 years now. If I could turn back time I would have waited one year to get the 981 Spyder for appreciation purpose but I am very happy with my S with sport exhaust.

I have this exact car. Except I got black wheels. I got extended leather and the seats and some other odds and ends for a total of 103.5K. About 22K in options. I bought it new and have 16K on it. I agree with you. I first wanted a GT4 but the dealer had 15 guys in front of me. Only one in front of me for the Spyder. They had two cars allocated and I am a repeat customer so they got me a car. I have the LWB's. Only downside is the wife hates to go with me but this car needs these. They really make the car and they look impressive as hell when you look into the car. I put GT3 control arms, an RSS rear control arms to bring in a little more negative camber and a harness bar with racing harness. That's all I did. It really gave the car some real bite and my buddy with his holy grail 2011 GT3RS couldn't follow me through the twisties going down the Dragon's Tale. He did pull on me when the road got straight but only a little before we hit the next set of turns. When I was in front I was steadily gaining ground as long as the roads stayed twisty. I like the challenge of air cooled cars but you're right when you talked about recalibrating your inputs to make sure you don't have a bad day. I like easy to tell the truth. Even a new GT3RS scares me. I drove another friends and it was hard to judge on the street with PDK. i guess everything takes some getting used to but I'm keeping this car. I owned a 991.2 Carrera S and honestly it was difficult for me to even really feel the rear engine bias. It was there but didn’t define the driving experience. Mid engine does have the perfect 50/50 weight balance which gives you a greater level of confidence. My 86 911, on the other hand, does indeed present with a rear weight bias which needs to be managed. Slow in, fast out…or you could lose the rear end.

Great car. I looked at both the ‘16 Spyder and ‘15 GTS and ultimately chose the GTS with PDK. On the head unit connectivity, my car came with Bose Surround. Once you connect your phone via bluetooth, a streaming bluetooth option appears in the menu after pressing the source button ….no wires music!

One difference is that you don't need a degree in mechanical engineering to figure out how to get the top up/down in a 981. 987 Spyder top looks like it was designed by Rube Goldberg.

As an admittedly non-objective 718 Spyder owner, I never understood why some view the 981 Spyder as the more raw car? The exhaust is definitely louder, but the 981 Spyder has the first gen EPS with less steering feel and it doesn't get the GT front end found in the 718 Spyder and both generations of the GT4. If anything, I viewed the 981 Spyder as the least raw car, at least among this particular group of four Porsche models. What am I missing?

I can’t speak to the 718 Spyder as I haven’t driven it but I can say that between the 981 and the 718 GT4’s, the 981 is more analog feeling: 981 Cayman GT4 or 718 Cayman GT4...Which Is Best? Owners Debate! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIGtoWeshrxkl80

I own a 981 Spyder and my neighbor owns a 718 Spyder in an equal spec. The 718 is more buttoned-down feeling, while the 981 is a bit more “lively”. It’s these small imperfections which translate to that raw feeling. Couple that more lively Suspension with the objectively better exhaust tone and you’ve got your answer.

absolutely not. Anything Porsche puts out is good. Boxsters have their place in the pecking order as do Caymans. My GT4 RS will never be as good as a 911 GT3 or 911 GT3 RS and I'm ok with that. The Boxster will never be as good as a Cayman. All great cars.

@jscifres100 Жыл бұрын
“Never be as good?!” 😂 That’s silly to say. It 100% depends how you want to use the car. I’ve driven darn near everything and I wouldn’t trade my 981 Spyder for anything because I drive within the realm of reason on real roads. With adequate power from a NA 911 engine, a GT shifting 6-speed, glorious sounds, excellent balance, unique style, a raucous character, and Porsche reliability, the 981 Spyder is a perfect real-world sports car.

Different strokes for different folks I get it. And it's great talking about subjective points like "fun" and "thrilling" "best sports car" etc. Porsche makes great products all around and the Boxster has it's place in the lineup. I can't wait until the Sypder RS comes out, all of a sudden it's gonna be "better" and more "fun" then my 4RS, lol.

Goes without saying, more than 50% of true sports car characteristics comes from its suspension. Unfortunately, 981 Boxster Spyder doesn't have the same suspension as GT4 and it was NOT fully developed by the GT department in Weissach. If you would like the true GT car in Spyder, then please consider getting 718 Spyder. It is a whole new world and it reall drives just like GT4, but convertible. 😎

I have the same car but with the sofas. I’m a little bigger than you and the sofas are snug fit and hold me in quite well. I suggest anyone who gets the LWB seats to try them first. I couldn’t live with them even on a weekend car. The head unit has Bluetooth, so that’s how I wirelessly connect my phone and then use Siri to control the music. It’s completely hands free. Interesting that you say the 981 GT4 motor feels more GT. It’s the exact same 3.8L in the Spyder that’s taken from the 991.1 CS. It shouldn’t feel or sound different but I’ve never driven a GT4. I agree that the Spyder is an amazing car and one that I will own for many more years.

The GT4 motor is tuned differently I believe. For sure the 3.8’s are the same but the GT4 version rattles and clatters far more than the Spyder, which I would term as silky compared to the GT4. Both are AWESOME cars, though. Can’t go wrong with either.
